MTV: Death Cab For Cutie's Guide To Seattle: Watch A Preview Here

Death Cab for Cutie originally formed sometime around 1997, in the idyllic college town of Bellingham, Washington (unofficial nickname: "The City of Subdued Excitement"), but it was in a city 90 miles south where they'd really make their mark: Seattle.

Most of the band had grown up in towns surrounding the Emerald City during the height of the so-called "grunge explosion," and their teenage years progressed somewhat accordingly — Ben Gibbard, who was raised in Bremerton, would take a 55-minute ferry trip across the Puget Sound to watch bands play at the now-defunct OK Hotel in downtown Seattle — so, when they decided to make the move from Bellingham to the proverbial big city to try their hand at becoming a real rock band, well, it was sort of the stuff of dreams. Only, things didn't quite work out the way they had planned.
DCFC's early years were a struggle, marked by lousy, low-paying jobs and thinly attended gigs. When Gibbard took up residence in a tiny apartment on Corliss Avenue, working as what could charitably be described as a medical tech (he basically washed testing equipment), there were times when he thought about packing it in and heading back home. It seemed simpler than striking out as a rock frontman.
But he didn't, and slowly, people began paying attention. Released on Seattle's Barsuk Records, early efforts like We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes (most of which was written in that apartment on Corliss) and The Photo Album were met with much acclaim, and Death Cab for Cutie were on their way. Only, in a lot of ways, they've never really left ... Seattle is, was, and probably always will be their spiritual home.
And those sentiments are readily apparent on the band's May 31 album, Codes And Keys, Codes And Keys, which is about several things, most of which seem to be about the eternal longing for home, no matter how far away from it you may be. So, in celebration of the new album, earlier this month, we asked Death Cab to show us around their adopted hometown of Seattle ... the venues they haunted as teens, the places they worked before they made it big, the studio where they recorded parts of the new album. But it's much more than a guided tour; it's also a history lesson, both in terms of the band, and the Seattle music scene too.
We're calling it "Death Cab for Cutie: Seattle Sonics," and it begins Tuesday on MTVNews.com. But as we head into the long weekend, we figured we'd give you a taste of what's to come. Click on the teaser clip featuring Gibbard and bassist Nick Harmer recalling the glory of all-ages OK Hotel shows, and the havoc parent-mandated curfews wrecked on those magical nights. Enjoy, and make sure to check back on Tuesday, when the history lesson truly begins.

John Hughes Tribute

Death Cab for Cutie performed at the Critics' Choice Awards as a tribute to the late John Hughes (director of Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club and Farris Bueller's Day Off just to name a few).

Critics' Choice Awards 2010 Pay Tribute To Late Director John Hughes

Amy Poehler and John Krasinski remember his iconic films, while Death Cab for Cutie perform 'Don't You (Forget About Me).'

John Krasinski and Amy Poehler joined forces with Death Cab for Cutie to pay tribute to late director John Hughes at the on Friday night (January 15).
Krasinski and Poehler, dressed as "Pretty in Pink" best friends Duckie and Andie, recalled what made Hughes such a legendary and unique director. Poehler wore Andie's homemade pink prom dress, while Krasinski donned Duckie's famous fedora and blazer.

"To call anyone the voice of a generation sounds overblown and cliché," Poehler said. "It's hard to think of a filmmaker who made so many movies so many of us know by heart."
Recalling the memorable lines from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," she added, "When we watch a John Hughes movie, we learn that life moves pretty fast. It's hard to find anyone not moved or defined by John Hughes. John Hughes, we thank you for everything,"
"And we miss you," Krasinski chimed in before a montage of Hughes' most-loved films played, including scenes from "Pretty in Pink," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Uncle Buck," "The Breakfast Club" and "Home Alone."
Death Cab for Cutie closed out the tribute with their own spin on the classic "Breakfast Club" anthem "Don't You (Forget About Me)," originally performed by Simple Minds, as classic images from Hughes' now-iconic films played in the background.
"John Hughes was very much a captain of our youthful revolution," Death Cab drummer Jason McGerr told MTV News before the show. "Every movie he has ever made is ingrained in our brains, and 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' is a song we all fell in love with."

New Moon Fame

Death Cab for Cutie are enjoying the new found fame from being on the New Moon soundtrack.

Death Cab For Cutie Enjoy Their 'New Moon' Fame At The Woodie Awards

'I don't think we've ever done anything like this,' guitarist Chris Walla says of the band's inclusion on the blockbuster soundtrack.

Though they didn't walk away with any slabs of timber under their arms, it could be argued that Death Cab for Cutie were the all-stars of the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards. The awards show that celebrates independent music of all types welcomed back a true rags-to-riches story in the quartet, who toiled tirelessly on the margins for years before graduating to arena-rock size and scope. They delivered the evening's centerpiece performance, a run-through of their current single "Meet Me on the Equinox," which has garnered the band quite a bit of attention as it's on the soundtrack to current box-office juggernaut "The Twilight Saga: New Moon."

In fact, the band's newfound vampire-assisted success is just another twist in what has been a career full of unusual turns. "I don't think we've ever done anything like this, where it's a real dynamic, changing thing," explained guitarist and resident "Twilight" fan Chris Walla. "I love it. I was at the premiere two nights ago and it was great. The movie is awesome." Walla even approves of the film's campier aspects. "There are a lot of shirtless dudes," he admits. "When the shirtless-dude factor happens, it seems a little wink-wink, nudge-nudge. But it's a high beefcake quotient — an HBQ."
Death Cab for Cutie's stunning (and fully shirted) rendition of "Meet Me on the Equinox" — as well as other jaw-dropping performances from Matt and Kim, the Dead Weather, Passion Pit and the Clipse — can only be seen on the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards, which air this Friday, December 4, at 10 p.m. on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU.

More Jimmy Kimmel

Robstenfan brought you the footage of Taylor, Kristen and Rob on Jimmy Kimmel, but there was a little of the fan questions cut off.  The part that was cut off was Jimmy tacklinGuillermo (the guy who proposed to Kristen).  She runs away because he starts coming at her.  Start watching at 8:40 for the part that was not shown before its really funny and cute how Jimmy jumps in there to protect her.  Plus here is Death Cab for Cutie performing on the same show.

Death Cab for Cutie

Death Cab For Cutie loves the fact that they are the first single of Twilight Saga: New Moon.  It is an honor for them to have a part in such a phenomenon.

Death Cab For Cutie Honored To Be Part Of 'Twilight' Phenomenon

'New Moon' soundtrack 'is not only part of the film, but it's part of your life,' drummer Jason McGerr says.

Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" wasn't the most likely choice for the first single off the "New Moon" soundtrack, but in a lot of ways, it was the best choice.
Seems they know a thing or two about the central themes of the whole "Twilight" series: love and loss. They've sort of made a career out of documenting both.

"I think everyone was looking for that next big series after 'Harry Potter,' and that's when I first started hearing about the 'Twilight' series," DCFC bassist Nick Harmer said. "And at first, I was drawn to the books because of the vampires and werewolves, but if you stripped all of that out, you have a good romance novel. It's a love story. And that I think really ties into a lot of the material we write as a band."
As luck — or perhaps fate — would have it, they were approached to write a song for "New Moon." And while some Death Cab fans might've scratched their heads when they heard the news, the guys in the band knew this was a perfect fit. And a rather unique challenge.
"We were all really excited to be asked to write for it, because it had become such a massive phenomenon," DCFC frontman Ben Gibbard said. "We wrote and recorded the song and turned it in, and you hoped the people deemed it worthy."
"The arc of the song and the ... way the lyrics unfold over the three-and-a-half minutes," guitarist Chris Walla added. "It's a really nice parallel for 'New Moon.' "
And so, the song was accepted and then tapped as the first single off the soundtrack, which hits stores Friday. A week after finding out their song would be on the soundtrack, DCFC were whisked away to a mansion outside of Toronto to shoot the video for the single. It all happened that fast, and while most bands probably would've wilted under the pressure, Death Cab knew what an opportunity they had here — not just for some exposure but to be a part of something much bigger than any of them.
"It's like the soundtrack is not only part of the film, but it's part of your life," drummer Jason McGerr said. "So I'm super-excited to be a part of this ... we all are.
