EXCLUSIVE: Billy Burke Talks Breaking Dawn, Red Riding Hood, and Working With K-Stew
While filming Breaking Dawn, the last installment of The Twilight Saga in Vancouver, Billy Burke took some time to speak with Reel Movie News about his upcoming film Red Riding Hood, his currently in theaters movie, Drive Angry 3D, and of course, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.
Burke also asked that we put out a word for him to express his desire to work with Natalie Portman one day.
Check out the rest of the interview below.
Talk about your role in Red Riding Hood.
It’s a slightly, pun the metaphor, but off the path of the fairytale and I play Red Riding Hoods drunken, misguided father. It was one of the most beautiful sets I’ve ever been on. I kind of look like the drunken jolly green giant. [laughs]
Were you excited to work with Catherine Hardwicke again?
Absolutely. I love her to death, and I always have a special place in my heart for her. When she called me and pitched me the movie and the idea, I was all in. She created the Twilight world and she did an amazing job with that, and I figured if anyone could make a picture like this, it would be her.
People are comparing this movie to Twilight. Why do you think that is?
Here’s what my guess is. There is a love triangle. There’s a young girl and two gentlemen vying for her attention. That’s probably the biggest comparison. Other than that, there’s a wolf in it. [laughs] There’s sweeping shots across the mountains in the trailer and there were some in Twilight, so I think that’s what people are looking at.
How was it working with Amanda Seyfried?
Love her to death. She’s a lovely person, we got along great. We remain friends. She, myself and my wife are all still in contact and she’s a good chick. Extremely talented.
Talk about Drive Angry 3D.
I had way to much fun making that movie. I had a blast.
How is filming in 3D different than regular?
Not at all. For the actors, you would never know. The cameras look a bit different, but you’re not asked to do anything or perform a different way for the 3D effect.
How did you like filming the action scenes?
The first part of my career was a lot of action, so I was happy to get back into it. I did as much as I could. I had a stunt double, but I don’t believe they actually used him once. Amber Heard was down for all of her tricks in this movie too, she was a trooper. She got the shit beat out of her. She’s a chick bad-ass. I for one certainly would not want to fuck with her in a dark alley. [laughs]. She’s not tiny, she’s full on. We had a fight scene, and it was a lot - we had a lot of physical stuff to do and she was there for the entire thing. I think there was maybe one sequence where her double was used, but other than that she was there. I was way more exhausted than her. [laughs]
Any update you can give me on Breaking Dawn?
I’m here in Vancouver right now filming. The stache is here in all its glory. After this film, I’m not sure the stache in this form will ever return to my face. This has been a great gig for me. I don’t think that there’s any relief at all, if there were more books and more movies, I’d probably keep coming back. It’s a fun role to play and I love the peeps involved. As far as being sad, I don’t know if that’s going to happen. I’m certainly not going to be glad, though.
Fans are dying to know if the scene between Charlie and Bella after the wedding be kept in the movie?
I do have a scene with Kristen directly after the wedding, before they take off for the honeymoon.
How is your music going?
The first record is out there. In my spare time up here, I use it for writing and putting together what might be my second album.

Drive Angry 3D – Review
Drive Angry 3Dis filled with a great sense of its own silliness with director Patrick Lussier crafting a demented, gory and knowing homage to b-movie horror shows. It’s brash, crass, loud and thoroughly enjoyable. In many ways the kind of 1970s-inspired low rent flick that might have fitted neatly into the Grindhouse label given its penchant for thrills and chills with a pulp fiction heart.
Nicolas Cage plays John Milton (bit of a tired literary reference there), a bad ass ex-con who has busted out of Hell to rescue his granddaughter (yeah, Cage is playing granddaddies now) from the clutches of Jonah King (Billy Burke), a self-styled religious guru who worships Satan with his demented and dedicated clan of psychos. Oh and Milton’s daughter, before King murdered her, bit off his Johnson. Nice.
The use of 3D and its application takes a leaf from Alexandre Aja’s imaginary book on ‘Presenting Movie Mayhem in Stereoscope’. Drive Angry uses it to provide chuckles and horror in equal measure. And boy, do things get bloody.
This hellride actioner is one long chase scene and actually works well. One could described it as “Sam Peckinpah meets Roger Corman”. The story is threadbare but energised and powered fully by its concept and execution.
William Fichtner puts in an amusing turn as The Accountant. On the surface he’s all suave and cool, but really as deadly as the man he’s trying to return to Hell. Amber Heard also does herself no harm playing Piper, a foul-mouthed and hard as nails waitress who befriends Milton and joins him in his madcap quest across southern US back-roads and small towns.
There really isn’t much to grumble about. You’ll laugh in all the right places – including a fine sex scene turned shoot-out, you’ll enjoy the car chases and the deliberately corny dialogue. It plays to all of Nicolas Cage’s strengths as a great eccentric star, too.
As an audience who love the oddball actor we know his choices are hit and miss. Just when you begin to lose faith he pulls something out of the hat which makes you forgive him. Coming so soon after The Season of the Witch Drive Angry serves as a reprieve as much as an affirmation of the leading man’s qualities. When he’s on fire there’s nobody quite like Cage.
Of course the 3D leans more to the gimmicky side befitting its aesthetic and Lussier’s film would be equally enjoyable in the standard format. But since it delivers laughs and violence measure for measure it’s something the audience will no doubt embrace in whatever dimension it’s projected. Drive Angry has a cult classic vibe for sure, whether it becomes one remains to be seen. It tear-arses into cinemas from 25th February. Go and see it.

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Four
Drive Angry 3D
Opens: February 11th 2011
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, David Morse, Billy Burke, William Fichtner
Director: Patrick Lussier
Opens: February 11th 2011
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, David Morse, Billy Burke, William Fichtner
Director: Patrick Lussier
Summary: A vengeful father hunts down the people who brutally killed his daughter and kidnapped her baby. As the chase gets bloodier by the mile, his rescue spins out of control, leaving bodies strewn along the highway.
Analysis: Budgeted at a surprisingly large $75 million and shot natively in 3D, this just looks down right silly, as if Nic Cage's "Ghost Rider" and "Gone in 60 Seconds" had a freakish baby together. There were rumours this would be toned down to a PG-13, but instead it's being promoted as a "balls to the wall, R rated" feature which will be one of the film's selling points beyond its two main co-stars, a 1969 Dodge Charger and a 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle, which should get the auto-lovers of the audience aroused.
Editor turned filmmaker Patrick Lussier ("Dracula 2000") previously tackled 3D with the remake of "My Bloody Valentine", a movie mostly remembered for an extended scene of female frontal nudity. That film's writer Todd Farmer ("Jason X") also penned the script for this, a film where the villain of the piece is the enjoyable William Fichtner playing the devil's enforcer known as 'The Accountan0't. I kid you not, though to be fair it looks like the most fun role of the film.
The trailers released thus far, like this, indicate a film far too self-aware of its campiness and so goes way overboard in every way possible. That makes it a love it or leave it proposition, one you really have to be in the mood for (ie. preferably stoned) to enjoy.
