Fairy tales go to the movies in 2012

Once upon a time, Hollywood went looking for plot ideas in a place far, far away. The studio executives skipped over moviemaking brothers like the Coens and Farrellys and found what they were looking for with the Brothers Grimm.
Whether they all live happily ever after will be determined on various Sundays when the opening weekend box office numbers come out.
“If you look at this fairy tale, it’s not a happy ending,” Jeremy Renner told the Star earlier this month as he talked about his upcoming co-starring role in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
He and Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) play the now-grown storybook siblings 15 years after their escape from the kiddie-munching witch. They are now a team of rifle-toting bounty hunters who take down witches for pay.
“Call me mistaken, but I always thought fairy tales had a happy ending,” said Renner with a chuckle. “But I’ve come to realize it’s just not true. We’re revisiting Hansel and Gretel as adults. The last time we saw them they were left alone in the forest by their parents to die. They find a witch’s house covered in candy. The witch tries to kill them; they kill the witch.”
The movie, which opens March 2, is among a bumper crop of fairy tale-inspired films due out in 2012. It’s a trend that started last year with Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood, starring Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman. Then there was Beastly, a modern teen take onBeauty and the Beast starring Alex Pettyfer as the homely one and Vanessa Hudgens as the girl who sees beyond his facial failings. Neither movie did well at the box office.
Here is the latest batch of old-fashioned tales Hollywood is banking on for modern-day profits:
Mirror, Mirror: One of two Snow White movies out in 2012 and, judging from the trailer, this will be lighter once-upon-a-time comedy fare à la The Princess Bride. Julia Roberts plays the 40-something Evil Queen for laughs. Does this crown make my butt look big? Lily Collins is Snow White, Armie Hammer is the Prince and Nathan Lane adds comic relief. In theatres March 16.
Snow White and the Huntsman: Kristen Stewart is a battle-ready Snow White and Charlize Theron is the truly evil Queen Ravenna who wants her dead. The huntsman (Thor’s Chris Hemsworth), ordered to take Snow White into the woods to do away with her, switches allegiances and becomes her ally instead in a play to take down the queen. Rupert Sanders directs. In theatres June 1.
Jack the Giant Killer: Some of the special effects on Jack the Giant Killer were done in Toronto atSoho VFX for this new take on the classic story. This time the long-standing peace between men and giants is in jeopardy after Jack (About A Boy’s Nicholas Hoult) heads into their kingdom to save a kidnapped princess. Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy and Ewan McGregor also star and Bryan Singer directs. In theatres June 15.

The Top 10 Sexiest Movies of 2011

rom vampires to wizards and everything in between, we've got the sexiest movies of 2011 right here!

Whew! Was it hot in here this year at the movies, or was it just us? It seems like all of our favorite stars were gettin’ frisky- and we don’t just mean those of the bed headboard bustin’ variety (looking at you, Robert Pattinson). From super romantic kisses between our favorite wizarding duos, to dances that were far from the cutting-loose Footloose we once remembered, and even to skimpy schoolgirl ensembles, our 10 picks for the year’s sexiest movie scenes were red hot on the silver screen. Countdown? Let’s do it!
10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part 2
For fans of the Harry Potter series, getting to see wizarding couple Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) exchange a passionate smooch was a long time in coming. No need for any Amortentia here! (For all you Muggles out there, that’s the name of the love potion from the books.)

7. Red Riding Hood
Amanda Seyfried is caught in a steamy love triangle between two smokin’ hot guys. Oh, and there’s a werewolf on the loose that only Seyfried can speak to. Definitely not the Little Red Riding Hood you grew up on!

1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part One
Saving the best for last, our number one pick in the sexiest movie scene this year was none other than newlywed Edward Cullen and Bella Swan’s, er, Bella Cullen’s headboard-bustin’, pillow-ripping, bruise-inducing, absolutely sizzling honeymoon together. And with Breaking Dawn- Part Two looming on the 2012 release horizon, we already know there’s a hot year ahead!

The 20 Sexiest Screen Couples of 2011

As the year draws to an end, we can't help but reflect on all the memorable movies and stand out performances of 2011. But nothing made our hearts skip a collective beat like the actors who scorched up the big screen with their scintillating romances this year.
Whether it was teen newlyweds who brought new meaning to the idea of everlasting love, best friends who finally gave in to their undeniable feelings or superheroes who couldn't resist the magnetic pull of attraction, these couples had it bad for each other, and we for them. Take a look at the 20 sexiest cinematic couples of 2011.

20. Rupert Grint & Emma Watson, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II'

We know "sexy" and "Harry Potter" aren't usually used in the same sentence outside of fan fiction, but in the saga's final film, moviegoers were finally treated to the sight of Ron Weasley (Grint) and Hermione Granger (Watson) resolving years of pent up sexual tension with one magically climactic snog.

18. Amanda Seyfried & Shiloh Fernandez, 'Red Riding Hood'

The most memorable part of Catherine Hardwicke's period paranormal romance is the animal attraction between Seyfried and possible werewolf Fernandez. Between his smoldering intensity and her bright-eyed beauty, their on-screen make-out sessions steam up the woods.

16. Taylor Lautner & Lily Collins, 'Abduction'

After years of watching Lautner's broody Jacob Black pine for Bella in the "Twilight" series, it's refreshing to see the hunky star finally get the girl (the lovely Collins). That scene on the train alone -- when Lautner literally sweeps Collins off her feet -- qualifies as one of the best kisses of 2011.

15. Robert Pattinson & Reese Witherspoon, 'Water for Elephants'

Oh the angst -- the heartbreaking angst, and few young actors handle it as sexily as R.Pattz. As an orphaned college dropout who runs away with the circus, Pattinson's young Jacob falls desperately in love with the show's married star, played by the blonde and beautiful Reese Witherspoon.

9. Jennifer Lawrence & Michael Fassbender, 'X-Men: First Class'

We know Lawrence's Mystique spends the majority of the prequel pining for James McAvoy's Charles Xavier or flirting with Nicholas Hoult's brainy Beast, but the blue sparks don't start to fly until she finally hooks up with Fassbender's Magneto. Young mutant love has never looked hotter.

4. Henry Cavill & Freida Pinto, 'Immortals'

Look at them! They're too good-looking for words, these two – particularly when they're clad in gauzy ancient Greek costumes that show off their godlike bodies. It's a shame Pinto's virgin priestess Phaedra loses her powers after an unforgettable night with Cavill's Theseus, but we're sure he was worth it.

3. Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart, 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1'

After three movies of pent-up longing and waiting, audiences finally get to see Bella (Stewart) join her dazzling Edward (Pattinson) at the altar. At last, Bella and Edward do what honeymooners do -- and that extended skinny-dipping, bed-breaking, chess-playing, lovemaking sequence is a Twi-hard's dream come true.

Catherine Hardwicke Teases 'Sexier' 'Red Riding Hood' Alternate Ending

Missed "Red Riding Hood" in the theaters? No problem. Catherine Hardwicke's take on the fairy tale classic hits DVD today, and the director herself told Hollywood Crush that there are a lot of new surprises.
"I think it's pretty fun. We had fun in the editing room making some neat little clips and music videos and a gag reel and definitely want people to see it," she explained. "And the new ending."
No spoilers here, but Catherine said that if fans like the original ending then they will love the new one. "We liked them both. We thought either of them could be really fun," she said. "I liked them both and you get a choice this way. You can choose which way you want to go. This one's a little more sexier too. It's not completely new, but it has twist; It’s a little bit sexier, wilder."
Speaking of wild, the flick's two leading guys, Shiloh Fernandez and Max Irons, certainly drive the ladies wild. So what makes one-time Hump Day Hottie Shiloh such a babe? "He's kind of an expert—watch out ladies. He knows how to move," Catherine said with a laugh.
Co-star Max, it seems, is the perfect complement to Shiloh's bad boy ways. "He's so adorable and funny and hilarious," she explained.
Lucky for us, Amanda Seyfried—the film's leading lady—is the one that has to make the difficult decision. Oh, how hard it is to be Valerie. "She's right on the edge of discovering. Amanda is ridiculous, like drop-dead sexy and funny and fearless and tough," she said of the "Mean Girls" star. "She's just brave as an actress and a person. I really think she's a super-gifted actress that can pretty much do anything."

Meet Sam Claflin, The New 'Pirates' Stud

Hold on to your hats ladies and gays, Sam Claflin is about to blow your minds with his charm and ummm, serious hotness.  Or maybe he already has.  You're likely reading this because you recently saw 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' and you're curious to know about the extremely good-looking Orlando Bloom replacement.  Well darlings, if this (or anything else) is your reason for clicking, we've got an exclusive interview where we get up close and personal with one of Hollywood's hottest new 'it' men. Let's go!

Well, you've got a couple of really big parts almost right out of the gate.  I mean, this is the time where everything is happening for you right now...
I'm very lucky. I'm lucky. I'm so lucky.
You have 'Snow White and the Huntsmen,' (opposite Kristen Stewart) how did that come about?
Well, I auditioned for it a while ago, but it just became sort of official like not yesterday, but the day before. I found out a while ago but the offer was there and I'm, you know, very excited about getting sort of my teeth stuck into something new as well.
When you audition for these big parts, are there kind of a group of guys that you know are also going to end up reading for it?
I've never bumped into another guy. But Max Irons is a guy I keep sort of seeing around and as much as I love him, I hate him because he usually beats me to it, but I know he's an incredible actor and I'm honored to know that I'm even being considered next to him, you know, and it's, I'm very lucky to sort of be in these rooms with these amazing actors, you know. I'm very, very blessed.
What about actresses that you've screen tested with?
I've screen tested with Amanda Seyfried during 'Red Riding Hood.' And Astrid, and I think, that's it, really.
You didn't with Kristen for 'Snow White'?
No. No. I didn't. Unfortunately not.
Wow.
No.
Have you met her?
No. I'm excited to because I'm a big fan of hers.
(I'm genuinely shocked. Can you tell?) That's crazy that they cast and you guys haven't even met each other.
It's a bit crazy.
It says good things that they think highly enough of you to hire you without basically doing a chemistry test.
Yeah,I trust the director's judgment. I mean, he seems like a genius to me,  so I think he knows what he's doing. I hope he knows what he's doing. But I've heard such amazing thing about Kristin. I have a feeling that there's no way that we wouldn't get on, you know, I'd like to think like that anyway. But she's apparently rumored to be actually amazing. I have a few friends who know her personally and one friend who did 'The Yellow Handkerchief' with her, so not a bad word said, so.
His friend who worked with Kristen on 'The Yellow Handkerchief is Eddie Redmayne, who was ALSO in 'The Pillars of the Earth.'
I used to work with her dad.
Seriously?
Yeah, so I saw her a bit when she was little, around 12 or so, yeah. And she went from being a child actor and kid's movies (like 'Catch That Kid')to where she is now.
She is THE movie star pretty much of the minute and she's incredible as well. I mean, I just recently watched 'The Runaways' and also I love her in 'Into The Wild' as well as, you know, obviously, 'The Twilight Saga' but I'm very, very excited.
Are you going to be an English prince or an American prince? Do you know?
I have no idea, actually. I auditioned with an English accent.
Can you do an American accent?
I can try. I don't know.
Let's hear it!
(attempts accent) No. I don't know. I can't. No. No. (sounds like a Valley accent mixed with Christopher Walken, causing raucous laughter from everyone in the vicinity.) It's bad! But for the 'Red Riding Hood' auditions I had to do an American accent and also for a few others, but I've never landed any of them. But obviously, I'm destined to be English, I think. Who knows? Who knows?
