Could Kristen Stewart get an Oscar for 'The Cake Eaters'?
Fans of Twilight's golden girl Kristen Stewart know The Cake Eaters. Why? Well, to put it simply, this was Stewart's masterpiece.
In the film, she portrayed Georgia, a young lady stricken with a rare but crippling disease called Friedreich's Ataxia.
Mary Stuart Masterson, who directed The Cake Eaters, won four awards for the film at four separate film festivals. For starters, she took the "People's Choice Award" for "Best Indie" in 2007. She also won the "Audience Award" for "Dramatic Feature" at the Ashland Independent Film Festival, the "Discovery Award" at the Sedona International Film Festival, and the "Best Feature" award at the Stony Brook Film Festival in 2008.
The Cake Eaters was released starting in April of 2007 at the Tribeca Film Festival, but it didn't come to DVD until March of this year.
Masterson had spent time, according to one report, preparing for the film by visiting with two sisters who actually endured Friedreich's Ataxia.
The sisters, Sam Bode, 22, and Alex Bode, 19, formed a close friendship with the stars after they met with Masterson to tell her what it is like to live with the rare disorder. Masterson wanted the everyday information for what would become the critically acclaimed, award-winning independent film “The Cake Eaters,” in which Masterson makes her cinematic directorial debut.
Sam Bode would later comment on Kristen Stewart's performance in the film, saying she "hit the nail on the head" and that "For a minute there, I thought Kristen Stewart [had the disorder]."
Needless to say Stewart's fans rate her performance in The Cake Eaters fairly high on their favorites list, and one blogger has taken to polling about her work.
We are deciding if we should run an Oscar campaign for Kristen Stewart's performance in The Cake Eaters. We need you, her fans, to let us know if you would support the campaign. If you think we should do it please vote in the poll on the right. We need all of your support to make this happen so please spread the word. Leave us a comment - we want to know what you think.
So far, about 2,300 people have voted, and 97% of voters say a prominent and unmistakable "yes."
Unfortunately, the list of categories for the Academy Awards might be foreclosing upon this effort. If a nomination for Kristen Stewart in The Cake Eaters were possible, it'd be for "Actress in a Leading Role." The nominations for that category, however, tend to be pretty current. For instance, for the 81st Annual Academy Awards, the nominees were Kate Winslet for The Reader (the winner), Meryl Streep for Doubt, Angelina Jolie for Changeling, Melissa Leo for Frozen River (note that Leo was actually a cast member in The Cake Eaters, has spoken well of Stewart in the past, and also co-starred with Stewart in the forthcoming Welcome To The Rileys), and Anne Hathaway for Rachel Getting Married. All of the films for which these women were nominated were released in theaters in 2008.
Given the temporal nature of the situation, the effort may be filled with valiance and practical unanimity, but it may be an impossible endeavor just the same
