Rob media void

Robert Pattinson Confronts the Media Void

An Australian tabloid scooped the world on all things Robert Pattinson with a report from the depths of the British actor’s Vancouver lair that he’s “drinking to excess and indulging in other dangerous behaviour.”

The NW tab claims Rob has been “living his celebrity lifestyle to the extreme.”

The newspaper, aka rag, engages in the tried and true journalistic mix of a lot of fiction mixed with a smidgen of truth.

Pattinson is doubtless living a “celebrity lifestyle” in the extreme because voracious paparazzi and inconsolable fans have forced him to surround himself with security personnel. If he dares go public in Vancouver, he’d better be disguised or furtive: Where Rob treads openly, frenzy follows.

As for “drinking to excess?” By whose standards, NW? There all kinds of folks who think a swig of beer is the first step of a drunkard’s despair.

“Dangerous behaviour?” You betcha, as a certain former governor of Alaska might say. Rob smokes. Anybody who smokes ends up dead. (Anybody who doesn’t smoke ends up dead, too, but with better smelling breath. If they’re breathing. In which case, they’re not…sorry, I’ve been drinking again.)

The tabloid feigns concern though. Says “a pal”: “His people are very worried and starting to think he should go to rehab.”

Rob, bubala! Have your people meet my people. Then they can both work on my garden. And, er, ditch “pal.” Figments of media imagination are dangerous.

The Entertainmentwise website, which reported on the NW story, ends with this kicker: “It’s probably worth baring in mind when considering these claims that it was NW that ‘broke’ the story of Kristen Stewart’s pregnancy.” BaDaBing!

Worst of all this is Rob’s plaint in a recent interview that his mum back in Blighty believes much of the trash written about him. Showbiz Spy reports the lad is gobsmacked by the fact his mother believes the desperate drivel.

He said, “My mom says, ‘I can’t believe you did this’, and I’m like, ‘I didn’t do it’, she’s like, ‘yes you did, I know you did.’”

“It was about swearing, I was like, ’say something about sleeping with people and swearing and stuff, I wasn’t even in the city’. And she’s just like, ‘no, I don’t believe, I bet you did say that.’”

Super-celebrity has pitfalls, sure. But when your mother believes smut machines, that’s gotta hurt.

Rob’s ended the interview with a thought about all the unwanted attention: “You try and stay kind of Zen about it. You just have to learn to accept it all.”
