Bella's Look

Now everyone can look like Bella (well at least wear their makeup like her).

Twilight Saga makeup artist Robin Mathews talks beauty products and how to get Bella's look at home!

Unless you've been without television, internet, and magazines for the past year or so, you know that The Twilight Saga is the the biggest phenomenons around. Robin Mathews is the woman responsible for making Kristen Stewart's makeup flawless in New Moon and Eclipse. You know you've seen the trailer about 50 times, if not more, and you know Kristen looks gorgeous! In this interview, Robin dishes about common makeup mistakes, how Bella's look changed from New Moon to Eclipse, and what products she uses on set!
What is the biggest makeup mistake people tend to make?

Wow, there are many oops I'd love to address here, but as I can't elaborate forever, I'll try to pick the #1 issue. Skin care, prep, and foundation are most important. I’m very picky and obsessive about foundation and the application process. Foundation should mimic the texture of real skin and if you see it sitting on the skin, it either hasn’t been applied properly or it's not the right foundation for you. It should be very sheer in the places that you can get away with less coverage, and stippled a bit heavier where more coverage is needed. Proper skin prep is essential to this process. If skin prep and proper foundation application haven't been done, you can forget the rest. Follow a proper skin care regime for YOUR skin type. Exfoliate; moisturize if you’re dry, or use oil control if you’re oily. Use the lightest form of foundation you can get away with; try tinted moisturizer, or only concealer where needed. (And for goodness sake, sunscreen when in the sun!) Match foundation color to your neck right under your chin, to avoid a color line of de-markation. Blend well, paying attention to the sides of your face and jaw line that you don't necessarily see while looking in the mirror straight on.

What are your must-have products?

Well, I'm a fan of Shisiedo and Chanticalle moisturizers for daytime; they sink completely into the skin & don't interrupt the foundation process. There is a new line of oil control skin prep called Nurturing Force that I'm liking. I don't live w/o Cle de Peau concealers, Stilla convertible colors, or much of the Laura Mercier line. Anastasia's line for brows is a must in my kit as well as Ve Neil brushes, and a Shu Eumura eyelash curler. Also in love with Illona foundations from Italy.

How does the makeup in Eclipse differ from the look of New Moon?

The main difference would probably be that Kristen and I tweezed the majority of her eyebrows off for her role as Joan Jett in The Runaways, which we completed 2 days prior to starting Eclipse. I had to "hand lay" each brow hair individually for Eclipse until they grew back.
Bella's got a few more looks that were definitely different, but you'll have to wait to see New Moon and Eclipse for those!

What are products that you regularly use on the set?
My style tends to be about a flawless face and enhanced eyes. The skin and eyes are the gateways to the soul. For instance, if you become angry or embarrassed, your skin may flush, or your eyes may easily express your emotion. I like to use heavily pigmented eye shadows to get my desired results on set. If you realy know how to work with a pigmented product, you have the ability to apply it just as shearly, or heavily as you like. Don't get me wrong, subtly is a HUGE part of movie make-up, and I do use very light, subtle eyeshadddows on set depending on the character, but for the average woman, those shadows are a bit too subtle. (Your face isn't going to be blown up on a 40' by 80' screen). So, in order to keep my kit form containing the entire make-up department from Saks, I rely on the versatile results of a highly pigmented shadow. Some of my favorites are Make-up For Ever, Chanel, Nars, and MAC. Laure Mercier also makes a great eye shadow primer to use under less heavily pigmented shadows.
What type of skin care habits should everyone get themselves into?

Skin care and skin prep before make-up are the most important things. Looking at beauty blogs and articles on what the celebs use for skincare is a great place to start, but remember, that you must use what's proper for your skin type. Not every line is equally as efficient for oily skin as it is for combination skin. It takes professional make-up artists years of continuing research to find the best skincare regime for individual clients. The right skincare is out there for you, just keep trying. Most lines will give you samples to try; utilize that to see if products make a difference in your skin. It is absolutely possible for the right skin care regimen to "change" your skin.

What was your vision for Bella's look?

Thanks for the great compliment on Bella's make-up. Our motivation for Bella in New Moon was a look that would define Bella as an idolized popular literary character, surrounded by mythical creatures while still being a "real girl". She is almost a realistic cartoon character if you will, but still natural, youthful and fresh.

How can we achieve that at home?

Keep it young, fresh, and natural; pretty but with a punch.
