Move Over Vampires, Here Come the Werewolves
With the recent surge of interest in vampires, it seems only natural that werewolves would be soon on the scene. The blood-sucking, sophisticated vampires always seem to be followed closely by their wild canine counterparts.
The Twilight Series' New Moon has introduced a group of heartthrob werewolves to rival the teen draw power of Robert Pattinson. Taylor Lautner appears on this month's cover of Men's Health and has teens (and maybe more) swooning with every last dreamy smile.
In some old European legends, vampires and werewolves are linked closely together. Many believed the bodies of dead werewolves could come back from the dead in vampire form to feast on the human race once more. In more recent times vampires and werewolves have been depicted as two separate races at odds with one another.
If current predictions are right (and they oftentimes are), werewolves will be the next big thing in the entertainment industry. Already there are plans to resurrect one of the greatest werewolf stories of all time. Is it An American Werewolf in London or Wolf? According to Entertainment Weekly, MTV is bringing back Teen Wolf. For those of you too young to remember when DeLoreans time traveled, Michael J. Fox's career was flying high when he took on the coming-of-age story. In short, the story was about a nerdy high school kid who starts to notice changes in his body (i.e. hair in different places, voice changes, etc). He discovers the changes are that he is a werewolf, which means he is a particularly good basketball player and van surfer.
This time, Teen Wolf is coming with an original twist. Apparently the main boy-turned-werewolf strikes up a romance with a new girl at the high school. There is another werewolf boy at the school who is more violent. Sound familiar? MTV definitely knows their target audience, and after the reactions of the teen crowd at the arrival of the werewolves in New Moon, the movie will probably be received warmly enough.
So stay seated and keep those safety harnesses on: the ride on the paranormal romance machine is not over yet.
