For starters, both films probably aren't suitable for the younger Twi-hards out there as there's some sexually explicit content in each. The Runaways stars Stewart as iconic musician Joan Jett, and the most talked-about scene in that film is one that sees Stewart making out with Dakota Fanning (who plays fellow rocker Cherie Currie). If that's not enough to either entice you or turn you away, know that the film features heavy drug use and foul language throughout. This isn't your wholesome see-it-with-the-family kind of movie as Cinematical points out in their review by noting that "Kristen Stewart's Joan Jett urinates on electric guitars, pops pills, snorts coke, and loves other ladies." Definitely a ballsy performance on Stewart's part, and one that a lot of people have been talking about.
Cut to Welcome to the Rileys, which is a film that's received a mixed reaction so far. Some really seem to love it, though admit that it kinda slows down in the middle at times. Here, Stewart plays a stripper who "spends half the movie in her underwear", as one critic told me. She stars opposite James Gandolfini, who plays a businessman on assignment in New Orleans who takes a liking to Stewart's character and tries to help her (while she, in turn, helps him).
The two films are different, yet both feature a Kristen Stewart who's obviously looking to distance herself from the Twilight movies in a way that proves to people that she can do more than fall in love with dreamy vampires. Whether that means she always has to play some boozed-up sexpot, we do not know, but I'll admit that no one here at Sundance seems to be complaining.
