NEW MOON
With the impending Twilight mania which is sure to break loose on the release of New Moon on DVD tomorrow, we thought we’d heighten the hysteria with a few exclusive interviews with some of the cast.
In true IDOL style, we chat with the guys about how they came to be where they are now, how Twilight has affected their career and their journey from past to the future. It’s easy to look at these actors as buying into the empire of a franchise which is the saga, but once you hear their stories and struggle to where they are now, not only is it inspiring but you gain a new found respect for the actors who have been dubbed an ‘overnight success’, and learn that actually, their story is far from that.
Enjoy.
DANIEL CUDMORE, FELIX
IDOL: So Daniel, in your role as Felix, you’re the strongest
physically of the Volturi clan.
physically of the Volturi clan.
Daniel: Don’t tell Charlie that
IDOL: There’s gonna be war!
Daniel: Yeah… (everyone laughs and looks over at Charlie who is giving us all evils…)
IDOL: We noticed that in your previous roles you play supernatural people with ridiculous physical strength like Colossus in X-men and you also auditioned for the role of Superman in Superman Returns. Is this just down to your build and your height? Or are you genuinely interested in the characters?
Daniel: I think a bit of both. I mean obviously my size and the way I look sort of gets me through the door, but when you break it down a lot of the times the character is really cool to play.
IDOL: Is it a bit of an ego trip, playing such a masculine role?
Daniel: It’s kind of cool.
IDOL: We heard that when you auditioned for X-Men, they made you strip down to your shorts and flex?
Daniel: Wow you guys have really done your research!!!
IDOL: Yes we have!… So we were wondering if you had to do anything crazy when you
auditioned for Twilight?
auditioned for Twilight?
Daniel: Well not really, that one was kind of funny. No it was straight up regular auditioning, lines, dialogue that king of thing. It was pretty straight forward. It’s not like we were running around naked.
IDOL: Quick question about your past, I found out you used to play rugby, you were a forward for Capilano, so were you planning to go in more of a sport direction?
Daniel: Yeah, but over the years with all the sports I’ve played I was just unfortunate with injuries. It got to the point where I was like I’m really enjoying the acting and the sports side was kind of falling away, I mean I’ve got like a 60 year old right knee. So it got to the point where I was like, I kind of want to walk for the rest of my life, it helps. So I went for the acting.
IDOL: So did you grow up always curious about working in acting, especially giving that your mum worked in the film industry right?
Daniel: Yeah she was a locations manager. I grew up in a small town so I never really knew that you could work in film, I didn’t know there was a whole industry when I was growing up so I only really found out through the drama side, doing drama classes and things like that, not knowing what you could do. It was when I moved down to the city that I realised you could actually make a career out of it, in Vancouver, and then eventually if you wanted to go for it maybe move down to LA.
IDOL: But you kind of kept your distance at first?
Daniel: Well yeah, when I first moved down to the city I ended up getting a scholarship for football and I left and when I came back it was like my mum was like ‘hey you really enjoyed it why don’t you go for it?’. And I said I didn’t really know you could, so I got an agent and I kind of went that route, and one thing let to another and I was like wow this can work, this is crazy, it just went from there. And I was still into the sports, but the acting and the film has just grown, and I’ve been lucky enough to be able to do it. It’s not an easy business, it’s not easy to be consistent, and luckily enough I’ve been in it.
IDOL: A few random questions now…
Do you think we would make good vampires?
Daniel: Yeah
IDOL: Brilliant, could you get us in the film?
Daniel: Um, I don’t know
IDOL: Can you get us in the premier?
Daniel: I don’t think so, but I guess I could try, I can see what I can do.
IDOL: Brilliant. You could sneak us in. You’re so big they wouldn’t even know, we could be like your biceps.
Daniel:(laughs) Yeah, so why is Daniel carrying such a giant bag? With two heads popping out over his shoulder.
IDOL: We’ll work on a plan. What do you think of London?
Daniel: I love London, I haven’t really had a chance to see all of it. The last time I was here was filming a couple of scenes for XMen 2, so I was really only here for a little bit, and then I was gone, we were only here for 4 days and it was work work work. So I wouldn’t mind going out and seeing more of it. But I don’t think we have time. But I have a British passport, both my parents were British so I’ve been back and forth from Canada to England a few times. And obviously when you’re younger you never know where you are, just like sitting in the back of a car like “weeeee”. So I could have been anywhere really, your just like “awesome I’m not at school this is rad”.
IDOL: Are you competing to be the next Twilight hottie?
Daniel: What?
IDOL: Well is there a competition between you and Taylor going on, you know whos’ got the biggest muscles?
Daniel: I’m fully clothed in the thing, which is weird because in X-Men I was running around half naked all the time and now I get to keep my clothes on which is great, but no I’m not competing at all.
IDOL: The Volturi or the Cullens?
Daniel: Volturi
IDOL: So I take it you’d be team Edward over team Jacob?
Daniel: Well I’m on the borderline, I have a loyalty to the vampires, but I mean I’m a fan of werewolves, I haven’t stated what side I’m on yet. I don’t know where I’m going I’m just kind of here.
IDOL: It’s hard to choose.
Daniel: It is
IDOL: Vegetarian or bloodsucker?
Daniel: Oh bloodsucker, come on it’s way more fun, it’s sexy. What the hell do I want with animals, you know biting some girls neck is way sexier than like biting a giraffe.
IDOL: Yeah true, but I don’t think they go for giraffes
Daniel: Yeah I know that just sort of came into my head, it’s like I’m on safari, I don’t know what’s going on. (looks of confusion)
