‘Skateland’: ‘Twilight’s’ Ashley Greene and the Appeal of Roller Rinks

Could Ashley Greene end up being one of the breakout stars from the “The Twilight Saga” series? The actress is branching out from vampire films to a less-celebrated genre: the roller-skating movie. She’s set to co-star in the coming-of-age film “Skateland,” which plays the Seattle International Film Festival today and seems similar in tone to “Adventureland.”
The mini-genre of rolling skating movies includes “Whip It” (2009), “Roll Bounce” (2005), “Xandadu” (1980), “Rollerball”(2002 and 1975), and Charlie Chaplin’s “The Rink” (1916). And of course, there’s Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers in “Shall We Dance” and Rollergirl in “Boogie Nights” (1997). There’s something about roller rinks, perhaps, that’s romantic, nostalgic and cinematic–and such settings allow filmmakers the opportunity to load up the soundtrack with plenty of mood music.
