Fashion High Notes

ELLE names the music industry’s 25 most influential and intrepid style icons

If fashion is art (and we may be biased, but we think it is), then the music industry is at least three art forms at once: song, dance, and—as Lady Gaga would say—ra, ra, fashion, baby. After all, some of the most memorable musicians are the ones whose songs not only got into our heads, but whose clothes we wanted in our closets. Here, ELLE recounts the 25 music stars who carved their spot into fashion history.
CHERIE CURRIE AND JOAN JETT
Years before Madonna donned her now-famous cone bra on her Blond Ambition tour, the Runaways star Cherie Currie was rocking out onstage in head-to-toe lingerie—garter belts and all!—while her bandmate Joan Jett was decked out in black, from her dyed mop top and raccoon eyes down to her leather boots. But it’s the bright red jumpsuit Jett wore onstage during the Runaways’ 1977 tour of Japan that’s still burned in our retinas.
