An Afternoon with Kellan Lutz

Kellan greeted us in a charming way while shaking hands and asked everyone’s names. At this point let’s mention, that usually he appears more burly in pictures. It always feels like ‘Wow, what a man’, though in person he is a normal young guy who obviously goes in for sports regularly.
After the greeting was done we all sat down at a round table and Kellan – quite a gentleman – offered us something to drink.
By a fluke Sannie (AnnCullen) got the chance to take part in that interview as well and joined us shortly after. As she entered the room immediately Kellan stood up and greeted her like he greeted us before.
Then the interview began and Mona asked the first question: Has Kellan been in Germany before? He said that it was his first time in Berlin and he’d done some sightseeing already. For example he visited the Berlin Wall and the castle Sansoucci in Potsdam. There he used an audio player that was offered to the tourists giving more background information about the certain places and for Kellan it was very interesting. Because of his affinity towards technologies he fumbled around with the player and accidentally chose the German audio track. Due to his German roots he understood some words.
In response to the question if there was something he would like to ask his fans he answered that he is involved in a lot of charity projects which is very important to him. Thanks to his work he is able to meet many people of all ages and it’s always lots of fun to spend time with them and to exchange certain point of views. He told us that he advocated a lot of projects, especially those regarding to children, because they are near to his heart and ‘Children are our future.’
In addition he is very much interested in his fans and therefore uses the Social Network Medium Twitter (@kellanlutz) to communicate with them. Through this he finds out a lot about the different interests of his fans from different cultures.

After that a question concerning his cooperation with PETA and his dogs came up. At first Kellan didn’t understand ‘PETA’ but ‘Peter’ and wondered about the idea of what Peter and his dogs had in common. The misunderstanding was resolved quickly so that Kellan knew the organization PETA was meant. Because of that really funny situation he joked around before answering the question and said that it was really a secret what Peter Facinelli, he and his dogs would be doing together. Well, you can imagine the laughters in the room after that!
After calming down again he said about PETA that it would be everyone’s own decision from where they’d get their animals and that he himself prefers adoption. There are many animals left behind and they would be very happy to get a new home. In his opinion it’s the best way to develop a friendship between oneself and the animal because they’d be very pleased to get a second chance.
According to this he mentioned his dog Kola. He adopted her from the animal shelter. And even though he loves his work and is very pleased to get the chance to see the world, he always loves to come home and cuddle up with her. As reparation for his temporarily absences she is allowed to get into his bed. She is just a girl – on one hand very endearing, on the other hand she can be very pissed off when he is gone for far too long.
Referring to his love regarding animals he was asked whether he is vegetarian and he answered ‘No’. He loves meat since he’s been raised on a farm. Meat is his blood, after all he is playing a vampire.
After that we spoke about his role of ‘Emmett’ in the Twilight-Saga. He told us that he used to dress up as a vampire when he was a child and put on a cloak. On top of that he colored his teeth in red using ketchup or his mother’s nail varnish which by the way tasted awful he admitted.
With playing the role of ‘Emmett’ his dream came true. On the first day of shooting he was made up as a vampire getting pale and putting on his golden contacts and as he was ordered on set he asked his Make-Up-Artist where were his canine teeth. Then a very disappointed Kellan had been informed that Stephenie’s vampires wouldn’t have sharp canine teeth.
By the way, during the whole interview every now and then he played with his ring. And he looked very neat in his plaid shirt, silver-colored necktie and black vest.
In the following time we talked about his stunts in ‘Eclipse – Bis(s) zum Abendrot’ [German title] and he proudly said he does 90 percent of the stunts himself cause he doesn’t mind if he gets hurt and it would be nicer for the fans to see his face instead of the one of his stunt double. Especially the scenes with the dangerous cliff in which Emmett jumps from one cliff to another, have been delightful. He explained to us that he was secured by ropes and especially big heights were thrilling. The fighting scenes in the movies before have been great as well, even if they haven’t played a major role. Eclipse was different because there the fighting ability of Emmett is shown more clearly. Besides his character has more lines than just one sentence which made him happy because he has grown fond of Emmett.
While working with different directors he learnt a lot from them. Catherine Hardwicke and Chris Weitz were warmhearted and David Slade was very funny. With a smile on his face Kellan hopes that Bill Condon won’t turn “Breaking Dawn” into a musical even though he can dance quite good.
In conclusion: despite some people’s different opinion of Kellan Lutz a very charming young man welcomed us and answered every question patiently. With his easy-going nature he put us at ease quickly and he gave us the feeling of talking to someone we already knew. He appeared very outgoing seeking eye contact to his interviewers all the time.
We like to thank Kellan Lutz for this interesting conversation and Concorde Filmverleih [German DVD distributor] and Just Publicity GmbH as well cause they gave us this great opportunity.
