Kristen Stewart Says Filming Jack Kerouac's 'On The Road' Was A 'Wild' Ride

"Breaking Dawn" is gearing up for production right now, but its leading lady Kristen Stewart is involved in another literary adaptation that's getting its own share of buzz. During her off time from "Twilight," Stewart filmed a big screen version of Jack Kerouac's Beat Generation classic "On The Road," helmed by "The Motorcycle Diaries" director Walter Salles.
While promoting her latest indie, "Welcome to the Rileys," Stewart told MTV that throughout the filming of "On The Road" she never was able to shake her nervousness at adapting such a well-regarded book. "I would turn around in the car like every single day and show Walter my hand and it would be like [shaking] and he'd be like, 'Good, that it is how I want you to be'," she said. "No, [the nerves] never went away."
The film, which also stars Amy Adams, Kirsten Dunst, Sam Riley and "Tron: Legacy"'s Garrett Hedlund, was filming up in Montreal over the summer, and Stewart said the experience exceeded all of her expectations. "It was wild," she said, adding that the performances were "very much found," which was in the spirit of the story because "like everything happens for a reason."
In addition to Kerouac's book, the actors had the guidance of some period experts to help them capture the spirit of the tale. Writers and biographers would come to the set to educate the young cast about the era that they were filming.
"We do feel like we know a little more than most people. I mean, I know all of them by name. That is cool," she said. "But at the same time there are people that lived that, so we did feel a little bit like, 'God I hope that they don't feel like we're stupid kids doing this movie.' You always question yourself a little bit with people like that."
