Celebrity Makeup Artist Shares Her Best Tips

From celebs to regular folks, Kristina Goldberg believes in beauty from the inside out.

Kristina Goldberg's brushes have touched everyone from Twilight actor Jackson Rathbone to 2011 Tournament of Roses Queen Evanne Friedmann. The celebrity makeup artist's training spans Lancome to MAC, with extensive work in fashion editorials and promotional photo shoots.
Patch caught up with the cosmetics queen to dish about flawless make-up tips and tricks and how to “help make you the best version of you.”
Agoura Hills Patch: Where in Agoura Hills are your favorite places to try out or purchase new cosmetics?
Kristina Goldberg: I love going to Agoura Beauty Supply, because it’s fun to shop in, and because they carry a brand called “Youngblood,” which makes wonderful mineral makeup. CVS is always good, because they carry so many different brands at great prices and have the best cotton pads for removing makeup.
Patch: Because women in Agoura Hills lead such busy lives and might not have a lot of time to create a complete look every day, what are some great products and tips you can share on how to achieve a great look during the day, or at work?
Goldberg: I love using Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer with sunscreen everyday instead of foundation. It gives you a natural finish and is very quick to apply using your fingers. Then, apply a bronzer for a soft glow, and Lancome’s Hypnose Drama mascara. Your lips should be a soft natural pink or berry, and Nars has great lip moisture sticks with a hint of color. Eye shadow is not necessary every day, but I do like to put a bit of shadow base to smooth out the lid and brighten it up. The most important feature is filling in your eyebrows with a soft color similar to the roots of your hair. This opens the eye and gives an instant lift for a younger look.
Patch: If a woman in Agoura Hills is heading out for a night on the town, or perhaps going on a date, what are some great products and tips you can offer about creating a more dramatic, glamorized look?
Goldberg: I’d recommend using Matte Black Plum from Bobbi Brown for a beautiful smoky eye. False lashes are a must and MAC has the best ones that are easy to apply with Duo adhesive gel, and they are reusable. Keep the lips shiny if you have small lips and matte if you have large lips. Glitter and shimmer is fun, but keep it to one area only. You can use it on just the eyelids, or just the cheek-bones, but not all over.
My philosophy is that as long as you feel good wearing it, it is right for you.  Sometimes women are afraid to “just go for it,” and when they get out in the evening lighting, they can't even see their makeup, because it’s too light. You can go heavier with makeup at night, so try it next time you go out!
Patch: What's one piece of advice, or a golden rule, you would recommend to all women in Agoura Hills regarding makeup?
Goldberg: I don't believe in throwing anything out. You can clean most of your makeup and tools by using spatulas and brushes. Also, skin care is important to maintain for your specific needs. However, there are no “rules” in makeup, so have fun. Color application is all up to you. Makeup is art, and it is infinite, expressive, and creative.
Patch: Which celebrities or high profile shoots have you had the opportunity to work on?
Goldberg: A really amazing experience was doing the makeup for the Queen of the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade and her court. It was such an honor to work with these seven incredible young women who have done so much for their communities. I did their makeup for the Pasadena magazine shoot, Macy’s photo shoots, the Queen’s coronation ceremony, and at 4 a.m. on New Years Day before the parade.
Also, working with Jackson Rathbone of Twilight for the cover of Zooey Magazine was crazy. He is such a character! We were outside in Beverly Hills shooting and every time a “Star Tours” bus came by, the people on the bus would yell at us to get his attention and he would play it up. He is just a very cool guy.  He is a musician and played his harmonica for us, which was awesome.
