A few days ago, it was announced that Debra Zane - who had been hired to do Los Angeles-based casting for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn last summer – was chosen as the casting director for the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ epic The Hunger Games (directed by Gary Ross).
According to The Wall Street Journal, Lionsgate chose Zane to cast “the people you imagined [as the characters] but not the ones you expected.”
At this point, zero casting announcements have been made for The Hunger Games, and right now all any fan of the trilogy wants to hear is who’ll be bringing the most prominent characters in the series -Katniss, Peeta, and Gale – to the big screen.
Of course, there are a ton of other characters to think about as well. Some are more important than others, but the fact remains – even in book one’s dead tributes alone, there are almost two dozen. Some are named, like Thresh, Foxface, Rue, Clove, Cato, and Glimmer . . . and others are not. They’ll all be in the film.
With The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, the situation was very similar. All told, between the two big casting announcements (Denali and then other covens)for the films, twenty-two new vamps were cast for the various covens (not including Renesmee, her body doubles, or the supporting cast members).
These new castmembers are taking on characters that are, in some instances, very undeveloped in the book Breaking Dawn, but as they say, “there are no small roles.”
Some of the newest members of the Twilight cast family, those chosen for Breaking Dawn – Part 2’s coven roles (probably by Debra Zane), have been spending their off-time from filming in Baton Rouge reading The Hunger Games, and they’ve posted their thoughts to Twitter.
For instance, Erik Odom (tapped to play “Peter,” an American Nomad vampire) shared his thoughts throughout reading the series.
Sooooooo...bought The Hunger Games two days ago...finished it this morning...you guys weren't kidding, GREAT BOOKAnd yes, I went to Books A Million last night to buy the second and third books so I wouldn't miss a beat today transitioning...haha ;)It's a great read and so cinematic! Really interested to see what you and Gary Ross have in store for us...:)Almost through Catching Fire...trying to slow down so it lasts longer...#TheHungerGamesSoooo, finished Mockingjay last night and...I kinda don't know what to do with myself...#TheHungerGames #withdrawal
Similarly, Valorie Curry (“Charlotte,” also an American Nomad) has also spoken up about her affection for the series.
I don't think it's cheating, but I just spent the last week with The Hunger Games trilogy. Incredible.Really? I loved the ending. I was so happy it wasn't sugar-coated, but felt appropriate to the story. Very bleak.Like Rue dying all over again. Except that in a lot of ways, we knew Rue better when she died. Maybe that was the point.Converted another castmate to The Hunger Games. Score! The Hunger Games is an incredible YA triology. Very dark, very political, very smart. And very addictive.
Obviously, neither of these has specifically expressed an intention of auditioning for any of the roles, but would anyone turn down the opportunity?
Given the timing (there are unconfirmed murmurs about shooting in NC in April; Breaking Dawn is expected to be complete by then, especially for the coven actors), the similarity in posture (particularly with regard to casting director relationships), and, well, interest in the story, it wouldn’t be altogether surprising if a The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn star found his or her way into The Hunger Games films as well, would it?
