The actor was in the running for the role as vampire Edward Cullen but was pipped to the post by R-Patz. Fernandez has now landed himself a role in upcoming blockbuster Red Riding Hood and says he’s thankful that it is 24-year-old Pattinson and not him who is trailed around by screaming fans.
‘It makes me happy that I didn’t do it,’ he said. ‘How can you want that for yourself? How can you wish that on anybody? I think Pattinson handled it really well – he seems like a neat kid, interesting and kind of strange but I wasn’t in the right mind to take any of that. I wasn’t mentally prepared to have any sort of success in that way. Even with this tiny, tiny morsel of fame I’m experiencing now I still feel uncomfortable.’
‘I smoked a bit too much weed in high school but at least I got it out of the way: I don’t need to be stoned anymore. Weed was never fun for me – I was just uncomfortable with myself so I wanted to be stoned. But just being comfortable in my own skin now means I don’t have to do it.’But the 25-year-old from Ukiah, California, says he won’t be returning to his pot-smoking days of high school to help him relax.
And ladies, if you’re impressed by this snap, taken for a magazine shoot, you won’t be able to track him down in any clubs. Already abandoning the scene, he says, ‘What I’ve realised is that when I walk into a club I don’t feel good, I feel uncomfortable. I wonder what to do, I look for my drink ... it’s not necessarily an enjoyable experience, so why would I put myself through that?’
Red Riding Hood is a retelling of the brothers Grimm fairy tale directed by Catherine Hardwicke of Twilight fame.
