When I arrive at a cozy pub in Vancouver’s historic Gastown one chilly, Saturday night, Tyson Houseman is already drinking a beer, “whatever’s on special,” he tells me, and I order the same. With stylish, black-framed glasses and an endearing, crooked smile, he seems like the archetypal 21-year-old male. In reality, he’s leading an extraordinary life—Tyson is a Twilight werewolf (he plays Quil Ateara, best friend to Taylor Lautner’s character, Jacob). Taking a sip from his pint, he confesses he’s worried about getting tipsy over the course of our interview and divulging too much. As a writer, it’s all I can hope for, but the guy is so down-to-earth and unaffected, any dirt revealed only scores him points.“I was a little nervous [coming here] because this is the first time ever I’ve had an actual sit-down [interview] experience,” he admits. “Usually it’s just, like, six days straight of [being] on the phone from 9 to 5, doing 10-minute interviews with hundreds of people every day, and they literally ask the exact same questions over and over. So, interviews will get to a point for me where it’s just a rehearsed speech in my head: ‘Blah blah blah blah blah, Taylor Lautner,’ you know, that kind of thing,” he laughs.
