NEW YORK — Trailers for the Taylor Lautner thriller "Abduction," due for release Sept. 23, are circulating on the Internet, offering an early glimpse of what could be a new career for the "Twilight" star.
"Abduction," directed by John Singleton, has teen elements: a high school, a hip-hop soundtrack, a young love interest (Lily Collins). But it looks like an old-fashioned actioner, with FBI agents, guns and terse cellphone conversations. (Michael Nyqvist, of the "Dragon Tattoo" films, appears to play a villain.)
It's a savvy but risky move for Lautner. There's a dearth of young action stars these days, with the same old faces still popping up: Daniel Craig (43), Harrison Ford (who turns 69 Wednesday), Liam Neeson (59) and Matt Damon (40). Lautner, who turned 19 in February, may be able to fill the void. He's hunky, as any "Twilight" fan will tell you, with a physique toned by martial arts. He's reportedly been considering roles in "Stretch Armstrong," based on the Kenner action figure, and a hostage thriller titled "Cancun."
But action films are not the A-list attraction they once were. They often feel cheaply and quickly made (witness entries like "The Marine," with former wrestler John Cena). At the box office, they generally earn a fraction of what the "Twilight," "Harry Potter" or "Transformers" movies do.
Lautner's "Twilight" co-star Robert Pattinson has gone the opposite route, starring in weepy flops like "Remember Me" and "Water for Elephants." No wonder Lautner is springing into action.
