If you've not read Kathryn Stockett's book upon which the film is based, you may not know that Howard's character, "Hilly Holbrook," is the villain of the story. As Bryce Dallas Howard puts it in the attached interview:
"Hilly Holbrook is the president of the Junior League in Jackson, Mississippi, and at that time in the early 1960's for a woman, that was pretty much the most kind of prestigious place that you could be in terms of if you could imagine a career. And she really views it as such; she takes it very, very seriously, and is really at the top of this very complex social dynamic that's happening in this town. So, she's the boss, she's the leader of all the women in Jackson, Mississippi. Hilly realizes that Skeeter [Emma Stone, in the film] is being progressive and really taking a stand to do something to move . . . the conciousness of Jackson, Mississippi forward, and that really scares Hilly, so she does everything in her power to take Skeeter down."examiner.com
