nterview: ‘Breaking Dawn’s’ Peter Facinelli

For four films (with one on the way) Peter Facinelli has played Forks’ resident doctor and head of the local vampire clan, Carlisle Cullen. Considering Carlisle’s medical degree, the plot of ‘Breaking Dawn‘ by all rights should be Carlisle’s big moment to shine playing, well, doctor with Bella’s half-vampire baby on the way. And shine he does, though not exactly in the sense you might expect. As stalwart protector of the clan, he fights for Bella’s health and risks life and limb to get her the nutrients (read: blood) she needs to see this through. But, (spoiler alert – though, seriously, does anyone at this point not know what’s in store?), just as Peter points out below, as doctors are apt to do with unpredictable little ones on the way – he misses the big moment. Below, Peter talks about being bummed about missing Bella’s birth scene, plus his emotional last day on set and saying goodbye to the Cullens.

At this point, Peter hadn’t seen the movie yet, so I had one up on him:
.
MYSPACE: Saw the movie last night, it was great!
.
PETER FACINELLI: Oh, good. I have not seen it yet.
.
MYSPACE: You haven’t?
.
PETER FACINELLI: No.
.
MYSPACE: Oh, my gosh.
.
PETER FACINELLI: I’ve been busy on Nurse Jackie, so I missed the screening. I’m going to go see it tonight.
.
MYSPACE: Well, it’s really good so you’ll love it. Considering that you’re done shooting the entire franchise, what was shooting like? Especially the wedding, because everyone coming together for a beautiful scene seems like it must have been a lot of fun for you guys.
.
(Peter is laughing, I’m clearly way off the mark)
.
MYSPACE: Or not…

PETER FACINELLI: It really wasn’t. I mean, it was difficult.
.
It was difficult in the sense that it was raining a lot and I remember we were shooting nights. It was very cold outside, it was wet, the ground was really muddy. We had tarps up protecting us from the rain, but every once in a while the tarp would break down and water would come plummeting down on some poor extra. I knew that none of that was going to show up on film and that it was going to look great — because without the rain, it really did look magical.
.
And, there were moments that were so magical, that you forgot all about the rain. Like when Bella was walking down the aisle, you know, and Billy Burke giving her away. Or where Bella and Edward exchanged vows – I mean, all of a sudden all of that rain and stuff vanished in my mind and you get sucked into this beautiful wedding. But the weather was challenging I think for everybody.
.
MYSPACE: Carlisle more than ever, gets to show his protective side, and he sides with Edward when it comes to the fate of Bella’s baby. Which is to say he doesn’t want her to go through with it. And the Cullen family is split on that issue.
.
PETER FACINELLI: It’s never easy when you have a family divided. And Carlisle is always the peace keeper and the person who tries to keep this family together. And to have such a divide and have a such a split, you know, somebody’s going to walk away unhappy, and as much as you can try to reason and be rational, somebody’s going to walk away not happy about it. I do remember the scene with Kristen, having to explain to her that she’s going to die if we don’t get rid of this baby. And it was a gut wrenching scene. I remember, you know, working with her and having to break that news to her, not just as a doctor, but as a family member, it’s like trying to tell somebody in your family that they’re terminally ill. It’s not the easiest news to break to them and it was emotionally hard.
.
MYSPACE: Is there anything fun about the horror aspect of the film? I mean, you’re feeding Bella blood in a sippy cup, I mean, that’s got to be…
.
PETER FACINELLI: Yeah, I mean, there were a lot of laughs with that and watching her face the first time she drank that stuff was pretty funny.
.
MYSPACE: Are you at all squeamish? ‘Cause watching it in the theatre is pretty gross.
.
PETER FACINELLI: I was a little squeamish and I was like, “I can’t believe she’s drinking that, take after take.” And I had to kind of shiver a little.
.
MYSPACE: What was it made out of, do you know?
.
PETER FACINELLI: I think corn syrup and food coloring of some sorts…
.
MYSPACE: And how funny is it that Carlisle just has bags of blood laying around, you know?
.
PETER FACINELLI: Yeah.
.
MYSPACE: Everybody is hunkered down in the Cullen house and everybody’s fretting over Bella. How do you keep the momentum going when, visually, the scenes are actually kind of quiet.
.
PETER FACINELLI: Whenever you have a group of people on a scene, it’s tedious to shoot, because you have 12 people and everyone has coverage. As much as it is fun off camera, ’cause it’s kind of like whenever the Cullens get together, and I’ll miss those scenes, ’cause everybody’s in a room at the same time and it’s like your whole family’s there for Thanksgiving. You’re having fun. It’s a long process and you know you’re going to be there you know, shooting the same scene all day long. But off camera you know, there’s a lot of hanging out and having fun and conversations and that helps.
.
MYSPACE: What kind of things were you doing in the down time?
.
PETER FACINELLI: We play Words With Friends a lot. So we were all playing Words With Friends with each other.
.
MYSPACE: At one point in the film, Carlisle, Esme and Emmett go off to try to get some more blood for Bella and so you get a cool little action sequence in there. What was it like shooting the action this time around?
.

.
PETER FACINELLI: I love action sequences. I mean, part of ‘Eclipse’ being one of my favorite movies is I got to roll up my sleeves and do some action. So whenever I got to break away and do some action, especially in these films it’s fun for me, ’cause Carlisle is kind of buttoned up and proper all the time. I enjoy that and also you actually shoot those action sequences with second unit, which is a lot looser and fun and, you know, they’re always playing music and it’s kind of like a cool party.
.
MYSPACE: Were you on set at all during the birth scene? I mean, I know you’re character wasn’t, but…
.
PETER FACINELLI: Yeah, no, I wasn’t, so I have no idea what it looks like… I was kind of bummed that, you know, there’s two things that I’m bummed and miss, one is when they went to Italy in New Moon. I didn’t get to go. And then missing the birth scene, ’cause I thought, “Here’s Carlisle’s moment to shine, he’s a doctor!” And then he ends up not being there. But it happens in real life too. A lot of times people are pregnant and their doctor is off playing golf on the 9th hole and they just don’t show up. At least Carlisle had a better excuse!
.
MYSPACE: Yeah he does! What was your last day of shooting like?
.
PETER FACINELLI: My last day of shooting was with Elizabeth Reaser. We were on second unit and it was kind of surreal. I remember them saying we were both wrapped and we just hugged for a long time and then – it was definitely a moment that time stopped for a second and then we ended up going off to have dinner together after we wrapped and it was a lovely night. It was just fun. Sad, but you know, mixed emotions, sad but happy.
.
MYSPACE: What are you most looking forward to seeing in part 2?
.
PETER FACINELLI: I think Mackenzie Foy (Renesmee Cullen) is a really fine actress, and I really enjoyed getting to work with her. For a young actress who is so professional, never complained, always in the moment whenever you had scenes with her. I look forward to seeing her performance, ’cause I think she’s going to be quite good.
.

note: this is not a still from the movie; it’s just a really pretty picture of the actress, Mackenzie Foy from a modeling shoot.
.
MYSPACE: When it’s all said and done, what do you think you’re going to miss the most about this experience?
.
PETER FACINELLI: I think just having those scenes where all of us are in the scene at the same time, as tedious as it was to shoot, like I said, it made me smile having everybody there. I mean, there are scenes where you have two or three people here or two or three people there, but having the whole Cullen family in one room was kind of an indescribable experience that I’ll miss. Just playing those characters and having everybody in the same scene, that was fun.
.
MYSPACE: If you don’t mind, I’d like to ask you a couple music questions – What was the first record you ever bought?
.
PETER FACINELLI: Record?
.
MYSPACE: Or you know, CD…
.
PETER FACINELLI: I could do records! I kind of inherited my sister’s record collection. So I remember just having the smaller records, what are those, 45s? And, there was a mix of the Beatles on there. I think the Beatles were definitely something I gravitated towards even back then.
.
MYSPACE: And what are you listening to now? What’s the most recent album you bought or downloaded?
.
PETER FACINELLI: I like Adele. And, what’s that song Pumped up Kicks?
.
MYSPACE: Foster the People.
.
PETER FACINELLI: Yeah, I love them too.
