Review: 'Breaking Dawn' Teases, Horrifies

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1" (PG-13) Popcorn rating Popcorn rating Half Popcorn Rating (out of four)
Will "Twilight" fans swoon over "Breaking Dawn," the fourth movie in the five-part vampire boy-human girl franchise? Can you say box office billions? Is "Breaking Dawn" a good movie on its own? Not particularly. However, this is the moment "Twilight" fans have been waiting for since dreamy Edward Cullen (Robert Pattison) and smitten Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) came to life on the bring screen in 2008, born out of Stephenie Meyer's best selling books. The movie opens with the "Twilight Saga" regulars receiving their wedding invitation, and it's met with mixed emotions. But for Edward and Bella and their legions of fans, the wedding also means that the two can finally have the intimate moment that's been hinted about, danced around, winked at, for years. This yearning is what drives both the books and the films.Meyer, a practicing Mormon, preaches abstinence in her books, but in "Breaking Dawn," the moment finally arrives. Edward and Bella become husband and wife, therefore sex is no longer forbidden. However, consummating their relationship has always meant there could be trouble with a capital T in paradise. Human blood coursing through Bella's veins has kept Edward at bay for fear he may devour her, literally. What's more, his superhuman vampire strength could pose a serious threat -- breaking bones is not something that goes over well in the bedroom. After a fairytale wedding, of course, Edward and Bella go off on their own to a luxurious private hideaway. Bella wants the intimacy she's been longing for with her vampire beau determined to experience this while she remains a human (see above reasons why this is tricky). The two manage to get through it, except for some torn up bedroom furniture and a few bruises on Bella's body. But the capital "T" trouble isn't far behind.Bella becomes pregnant, but the pregnancy is accelerating at a rapid pace. This signals Trouble. Edward wants her to get that "thing out of her," but she refuses. The whole fiasco tests everyone's loyalty and patience, especially that of the Native American werewolf pack that's always looking for a reason to take down the Cullens. And that's the human element of it."Breaking Dawn - Part 1" is more of a horror movie than the previous films. The new bride could be carrying a vampire, made all the more creepy when it's decided that perhaps the baby would stop sucking the life out of Bella if it was given human blood. This is the beginning of a few gross outs leading up to the actual horrifying climatic birth. Parents be forewarned. This is sure to cause tween girl nightmares. What isn't terrifying are the pack of werewolves (led by the always buff, but still in need of acting lessons, Taylor Lautner as Jacob), who were so realistic in the last film, "Eclipse," that they practically stole the movie. Here, they look like something from a video game and are about as believable as the powdered make-up that makes Kellan Lutz as Emmett Cullen look like a mime not a vampire."Breaking Dawn" is yet another lead up to something that promises to be bigger than the last (this is basically the tease of all the "Twilight Saga" films). With the grand finale now waiting in the wings, fans can start counting the days until "Breaking Dawn 2" hits theaters -- 363 days from Part 1's Nov. 18 opening.
