Movie fans have a lot to look forward to in 2012, especially fan boys (and girls). Peter Jackson’s long-anticipated adaptation of The Hobbithits screens next December. Sony’s reboot of Spider-Man is on its way as are the first in The Hunger Games series and the last in the Twilightseries.
All of these movies will give new stars a chance to shine. Take the final Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn: Part 2 for example. TheTwilight films have made massive stars out of Robert Pattinson,Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. But in the last movie, a new star will have a chance to shine: Mackenzie Foy.
Foy will play Bella and Edward’s daughter, Rensemee.
The 10-year-old actress appeared briefly in the firstBreaking Dawn movie but she’ll play a much bigger role in the second movie where she’ll age 17 years. Foy has already made a big impression on her costars. Pattinson recently told MTV that Foy has been collecting money from the other stars every time one of them curses.
Martin Freeman is another star to watch this year. The British actor already has a small fan following in the U.S. thanks to his work on the original version ofThe Office and the recent British TV show Sherlockwhere he plays Watson.
But he has the chance to reach new heights of stardom with the upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey where Freeman will star as Bilbo Baggins. The second part of the 3-D film series (titled There and Back) is slated to hit theaters in 2013.
Another Brit on our list is Thomas Hardy. The 34-year-old actor landed on Hollywood’s radar last year in Inception where he played Eames. DirectorChristopher Nolan is employing the actor again in the upcoming Batman sequel, The Dark Knight Rises. He’ll play main bad guy Bane. The role is going to be a tough one. The late Heath Ledger set the bar very high for Batman villains with his turn as The Joker in the 2008 film The Dark Knight. If Hardy can make people forget Ledger’s performance, even for a little while, he’ll be on the road to stardom.
Andrew Garfield is another actor with big shoes to fill who we’ll be watching in 2012. The star held his own in last year’s The Social Network as Eduardo Saverin. Next year he takes over the role of Spider-Man from Tobey Maguire in a reboot of the super hero franchise. This time the movie will be in 3-D and he’ll play opposite Emma Stone.
Finally – there’s the three stars of the upcoming The Hunger Games. Jennifer Lawrence is the best-known of the three. The young actress was nominated for an Oscar for last year’s Winter Bone, but very few people actually saw that film. Josh Hutcherson also has Oscar cred, he costarred in last year’s The Kids are Alright, but he’s not widely known. And Liam Hemsworth, who plays Gale is probably better known as Miley Cyrus’ boyfriend than as an actor. If The Hunger Games turns out to be the next Twilight, these three could be the next Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.
Mackenzie Foy
Audiences got a peek at the young actress when she appeared at the end of Breaking Dawn: Part 1 but Edward and Bella’s daughter, Renesmee, will play a much bigger role in Part 2 which hits theaters in November 2012.
Andrew Garfield
Garfield stood out in last year’s The Social Network. In 2012 he’ll have to prove that he can carry a big franchise on his own. Garfield is taking over from Tobey Maguire in Sony’s reboot of Spider-Man. The 3-D film is scheduled for release next summer.
Kristen Stewart
Stewart is already a big star thanks to 'Twilight' but she'll have a chance to show that there's more to her than Bella with this year's 'Snow White and the Huntsman'.
