Thanksgiving weekend sure made a lot of money for New Moon
New Moon wins 2nd weekend, domestic total now $230.7M, worldwide $473.7M

UPDATE 12:00 PM SUNDAY 11/29:

The Twilight Saga: New Moon won its second consecutive weekend, taking in an estimated $42.5M from 4042 locations with a per theater average of $10,515 for the Friday-Sunday period, and an estimated $66M with a per theater average of $16,328 for the five-day holiday weekend from Wednesday to Sunday. These estimates include $14.3M Wednesday, $9.2M Thursday, $17.7M Friday, $16.5M Saturday, and an estimated 49.7% drop to $8.3M Sunday. This increases the film's domestic cumulative total to $230.7M through its first 10 days of release. 

New Moon was #1 in international markets as well, taking in $85.1M from 8,476 theaters in 56 territories. In Germany, the film scored the second largest opening day of the year on its way to an $18M weekend. New Moonalso topped the charts in France, Spain, and the U.K. Foreign markets where the film is doing best include the U.K. ($31.5M), France ($28M), and Australia and Italy each with $23M. Summit now estimates that foreign box office to date is $243M for a worldwide cumulative total of $473.7 with more international figures still being reported. With $230.7M domestic and $243M foreign, New Moon is now earning more overseas than in the U.S. (48.7% to 51.3%). 

Looking at the charts, New Moon is #5 on the list of all-time Thanksgiving weekend box office grosses. It also stands at #5 on the all-time list of the first nine days of wide release whenever they occurred, not just weekends. It needs only $27M more to pass Star Trek's$257.73 and make the top 5 domestic for 2009. Note that all the films in the top 5 opened in May-July. Another $20M after that will moveNew Moon past The Hangover ($277.2M) into fourth place. The film is still in 66th place on the all-time domestic box office list (not inflation-adjusted). Worldwide, New Moon still stands in seventh place but could shoot up to fourth place in just a few days, passing Up's$507M total. No movie made over $1 billion this year. These numbers are not "actuals," meaning they are only official estimates based on early reports. For those who are new to the box office numbers game, it may seem odd to have these figures when Sunday isn't even over yet. But it is standard procedure to have weekend totals announced at this time. After the Saturday box office totals come in on Sunday morning, studios always estimate Sunday and come up with a weekend projection. Of course, Sunday and weekend figures can only be estimates at this point. The actual Sunday numbers aren't known until Monday. But many years and literally thousands of projections have yielded formulas that allow the industry to predict fairly closely what Sunday will be based on Friday and Saturday's numbers and, therefore, what the weekend will look like. The actual numbers that come in on Monday are usually not too far off from the estimates made on Sunday. They usually adjust slightly up or down but are rarely far off. 


UPDATE 11:00 AM SUNDAY 11/29:

Saturday's box office estimates are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in another $16.5M from 4042 locations with a per screen average of $4,082. This increases the film's domestic cumulative total to $222.4M through its first nine days of release. The current worldwide cumulative total is $354.5M. There have been no new international numbers all week so the actual total will be much higher when Summit releases updated figures later today.

Sunday and weekend estimates will be posted shortly, which are expected to push the domestic cumulative total for New Moon over $230M. World figures should add up to more than $400M by the end of the day. 


UPDATE 6:00 PM SATURDAY 11/28:

Friday's box office estimates are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon moved back into first place, taking in another $17.7M from 4042 locations with a per screen average of $4,429. This increases the film's domestic cumulative total to $205.9M through its first eight days of release. The current worldwide cumulative total is $338M. There have been no new international numbers all week so the actual total should be much higher when Summit releases updated figures tomorrow.

The film had dropped out of first place on Thanksgiving Day for the first time since its release. However, The Blind Side dropped down to second place on Friday with $16.2M and New Moon is topping the charts once again after a whopping 95% increase from Thursday to Friday. New Moon has now made more domestically in eight days than Twilight did in its entire 147-day run from November 21, 2008 to April 2, 2009. It now stands in fourth place on the all-time list of the first eight days of wide release whenever they occurred, not just weekends, and in fourth place on the all-time list of days to reach $200 million (8 days). 

International figures have so far been staggering, with numerous records dropping in every country. New Moon was the #1 opening of all time in Australia ($15M) and New Zealand ($2.6M). In Italy it was the second highest opening for a Wednesday after Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It was the #5 best opening of all time in Spain and ninth best weekend of all time for a U.S. film in France."But the important headline was the film’s launch in Japan, where it grossed $7 million, the biggest opening of the year for a non-Japanese title," writes Pamela McClintock in Variety. It was the first time on record that two films made over $100M overseas on the same weekend (2012 and New Moon).


UPDATE 7:00 PM FRIDAY 11/27:

Thursday's box office estimates are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in another $9.2M from 4042 locations with a per screen average of $2286 to kick off the four-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This increases the film's domestic total to $188.2M through its first seven days of release. The current worldwide total is $320.3M. There have been no new international numbers all week so the actual total should be much higher when Summit releases updated figures this Sunday.

With Friday-Thursday totals counted, The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($188.2M) had the third largest opening week of all time, behindThe Dark Knight ($238.6M) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($196M), and ahead of Spider-Man 3 ($182M). It also putsNew Moon in sixth place on the all-time list of the first six days of wide release whenever they occurred, not just weekends. With just a few million to go to reach Twilight's total domestic box office take of $192,769,854, after today's numbers come in New Moon will have made more in eight days than Twilight did in its entire 147-day run from November 21, 2008 to April 2, 2009. Although the film was toppled from first place on Thursday by Warner Bros.' football-themed The Blind Side with $9.5M, New Moon is expected to take the weekend.

What's next? Of course, we'll continue adding to the tally each day both domestically and internationally. But the big question is, what about this weekend? Rival studios have pretty much thrown in the towel and industry experts all agree that nothing will topple SummitEntertainment's The Twilight Saga: New Moon from the box office just yet. Media analysts agree. How will Disney's Old Dogs do battle with the werewolves? Will Warner Bros. Ninja Assassin fight off the vampires? Warner "should peel more than a few young males away from [New Moon's] largely female-driven fan frenzy," writes Carl DiOrio in The Hollywood Reporter. However, DiOrio notes that "many young girls are already heading back to the theater for repeat viewings" of New Moon. 

Look for another #1 showing at the box office, with predictions of $60M being about average among analysts. Will they be proven wrong again?


UPDATE 3:00 PM THURSDAY 11/26:

Wednesday's box office estimates are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in another $14.3M from 4024 locations with a per screen average of $3,554. This increases the film's domestic total to $179M. The current worldwide total is $311.1M.


UPDATE 1:00 PM WEDNESDAY 11/25:

Tuesday's box office numbers are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in another $11,328,695 from 4024 locations with a per theater average of $2815. This increases the film's domestic total to $164.7M and was the 11th highest grossing Tuesday for any film, 3rd highest since Christmas 2007. This also puts New Moon in sixth place on the all-time list of the first five days of wide release whenever they occurred, not just weekends. New Moon is now the #10 film of the year on the domestic charts and the 16th highest grossing film in the world. The current worldwide total is $296.8M.

There is no doubt the film will pass $300M worldwide today, if it hasn't already. Overseas numbers are slow to come in.


UPDATE 11:00 PM TUESDAY 11/24:

THEATER COUNTS: Normally issued on Thursdays, numbers have just been released for the weekend of November 27-29. New Moonadds 18 theaters for a total of 4042. This is by far the largest release of the weekend, with second place going to holdover 2012 at 3444 and the new Old Dogs at 3425. 


UPDATE 4:00 PM TUESDAY 11/24: 

Monday's box office numbers are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in another $10,506,486 from 4024 locations, with a per theater average of $2611. This increases the film's domestic total to $153.3M and was the 14th highest grossing non-holiday Monday for any film, 4th highest since July 2008. This also places New Moon in sixth place on the all-time list of the first four days of wide release whenever they occurred, not just weekends. The current worldwide total, adding in $132.1M from overseas markets, is $285.4M.
