Veronica Magazine article about Rob.
Teen Idol [Reluctantly]
Since Twilight, Robert Pattinson’s life has turned completely upside down. We talked to the biggest teen idol of the moment about part 2 of the success series.
It’s still strange, he admits immediately: that journalists and fans crowd around him. Barely a year ago only a handful of people knew Robert Pattinson and now his picture is above the beds of millions of boys and girls around the world. ‘’I keep wondering when i’m gonna wake up from the dream’’, chuckles the Brit, while he strokes his hand through his characteristic messy hair. His grey blue eyes look at us expectantly.
Has your life changed alot the past year?
“Yes, it has. All of a sudden I’m on the cover of dozens of magazines, even if there are no movies premiering that I’m in. It’s very bizarre. Alot of people don’t even know that I’ve been acting for years and have played in ten movies. But all of a sudden I’ve been designated a teen idol and get handed scripts where I play a heartbreaker. It’s very weird, cause that’s not the way I see myself at all.”
Is it hard to walk down the street?
“Yes, if i’m honest it is. I get recognized now and stared at and people ask me for my autograph. Thats not what i expected when i said yes to Twilight. Its not that annoying : its a big compliment ofcourse that people know who you are, because they think your work is good. But sometimes it’s difficult when we’re in a hotel during a movie shoot and I can’t leave the hotel, because I’ll get ambushed. I can hardly go to a bar or a club without being approached by fans. But it has its advantages, too, of course. I’ve never had this many parts offered to me as I do now.”
What do you do in those hotels to spend the time?
”Sometimes I invite a few friends and we have a party. And I always have my guitar with me. I’ve made music all my life with a couple of friends. It is a bit strange: Some of them are so much better then me, but their songs are not picked up. But my songs are used in movies like Twilight and because of that people all of a sudden know that I sing too. That gives me mixed feelings, cause those friends definitely deserve more success in that area then I do. I would think it fantastic if they would let me play Frank Sinatra in that biography movie that Martin Scorsese is going to make about ‘Old Blue Eyes’. But I don’t know if I stand a chance: that is the most wanted part in Hollywood at the moment.”
You prepared for the first Twilight by living in solitude for a while, so you would understand how your character Edward must feel. Did you do that for part 2 as well?
”Yes, I did try. I also reported to the set a month earlier then the rest of the cast. But I was surprised at how easily I got back into the role. Maybe that’s because I always liked the second book better then Twilight. In the first part Edward is still very busy figuring out what he is exactly. In New Moon he’s figured that out and has to deal alot more with emotions that we as normal people also have.”
What is the strangest thing that happend to you since you became an idol?
”Pfff, where to start? For New Moon we filmed in a school in British Columbia. At one point the students found out that I was also on the set, after which they all came standing at the barriers while screaming. When we started filming they all had to be quiet. But as soon as the director said ‘cut!’ they started screaming again. It’s all very surreal.”
And what about the love letters?
”Don’t start me on that! A while back I got a twenty page essay from a girl who had pulled our horoscopes and she was convinced that it was in the stars that we were made for each other.”
Aren’t you afraid you will now attract women who like you because you are famous, not because of who you are?
”No, not all. I’ve always done what I thought was right, and that’s made me who I am today. That I’m famous, is now part of me. I don’t think there are two Robert Pattinson’s. Anyway I’m already happy with all the attention I’m getting! And people that want to spend five minutes with me will find out that I’m really not as fun as the media always says I am!”
The translation for the movie preview page:
In the Netherlands the Twilight madness isn’t as extreme yet as it is in the US, but that could all change now that part two will be released upon the vampire and werewolf fans next week.
