AOL releases hottest search terms 2011

nternet company AOL has released some interesting data onto the UK and US versions of its Hot Search web site. It is no secret that key terms are at the heart of any SEO campaign so the search terms most popular amongst internet users are useful as basic guidance for SEO professionals.
The Hot Search web site identifies popular search terms on a range of topics and publishes them for the benefit of the public. According to the end of 2011 US category of the Hot Search web site, the most searched term of 2011 was “Casey Anthony Trial”, demonstrating the predictable public fascination with sordid trial proceedings. This one will come as little surprise to anyone who remembers the trial of O.J. Simpson.
Other popular searches in 2011 include “Royal Wedding”, “Arab Spring”, “Japan Earthquake”, “European Debt Crisis” and “Osama bin Laden Death”.
The web site also features the most popular searches in specific categories, for example celebrities, movies, sports and memes. Perhaps unsurprisingly after his breakdown and the subsequent media circus, the most searched for celebrity in 2011 was “Charlie Sheen”. The most popular sports related search among AOL users was “Kentucky Derby”. The most searched-for meme on AOL was “Ted Williams”, a voiceover artist who had struggled with alcohol and drug addiction and tragically been rendered homeless by his circumstances. A video interview with the unfortunate man went viral on YouTube and subsequently his career was rekindled – in November of this year he was offered a job working from his home as the voice of the New England Cable Channel.
Cinema fans will be unsurprised to see that “Harry Potter 7″ topped the list of film-related AOL searches. Other popular films included “The Help”, “Super 8″, “Water For Elephants” and “Pirates of the Caribbean”.
The Hot Search UK web site also features a number of short articles with accompanying top 10 related search lists for users who are interested in learning more about the issues explored therein.
