Twilight in Forks: By the Numbers

FORKS — The number of visitors who checked in at the Forks Visitor Information Center dropped from a peak of 73,000 visitors in 2010 to 45,000 in 2011.

But that still puts the town way ahead of pre-Twilight times, said Marcia Bingham, director of the Forks Chamber of Commerce and the visitor center.

The number of visitors who checked in at the visitor center was 5,575 in 2005, the year the first book in Stephenie Meyer’s four-novel series, Twilight, was released.

Within a month of its release in October that year, the book was in fifth place on The New York Times’ best-seller list and later peaked at No. 1.

New Moon was released in 2006, Eclipse in 2007 and Breaking Dawn in 2008 — and the rise in visitors to Forks — where Meyer located most of the action of the novels — followed the climb in sales of the best-selling novels.

Visitors to Forks numbered 6,386 in 2006, 10,295 in 2007 and 18,736 in 2008, with most fans of the books about teen love and vampires.

In November 2008, the first movie based on the series, “Twilight,” was released, and from there, the rise in visitors was meteoric.

In 2009, 70,000 visitors arrived, followed by 73,000 in 2010, according to statistics kept by the visitor center.

“And that only includes the people who signed in at the visitor center,” Bingham said.

People who return to Forks for a second or third time usually skip the visitor center, she said.

Although in 2011 the number of visitors fell to 45,000, that’s still considerable higher than before Twilight, Bingham pointed out.

Forks, which has a population of 3,532, received more than $500,000 in sales taxes in 2011, mostly thanks to millions of dollars in sales of Twilight items, which contributed to funding school, medical clinic and housing construction projects, Bingham said.

The film of “New Moon” broke box office records as the biggest opening day in history Nov. 20, 2009.

“Eclipse” was released on June 30, 2010, and the first “Breaking Dawn” film in November 2011.

A new movie release, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II” on Nov. 16, is expected to help maintain visitors’ interest in the West End town.

The first month of this year, 1,062 visitors checked in at the visitor center, Bingham said.

“And this is January,” she said, noting that the off-season is still busier than it was in the height of tourist season before Twilight.

In July 2004, a mere 1,005 visitors stopped at the center, with 78 in January 2005.

Forks fetes a 'Twilight' birthday

FORKS — A celebration of vampires and werewolves with a wedding shower, a birthday party, drag racing and a softball tournament thrown into the mix can happen only in Forks.

Just in case anyone forgot about Twilight, Forks' annual Stephenie Meyer Day — which is actually three days of events beginn­ing today — brings the best-selling vampire romance back into the forefront, as the residents of Forks celebrate fictional character Bella Swan's Sept. 13 birthday.

To recognize her birthday, there will be a birthday party and cake at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Stephenie Meyer Day stage in the vendor area along Spartan Avenue, a block south of Forks Avenue, between A and D streets.

In the series of best-selling novels by Meyer — and the movies the books spawned — Bella, who would be 23 on Tuesday if she were real, moved to Forks as a high school junior and met Edward Cullen and his “family” of vampires.

Most of the events in the vampire romance series take place in Forks, LaPush or Port Angeles.That has drawn fans of the best-selling book series and blockbuster movie series to the North Olympic Peninsula in droves.

Forks has embraced the series, and its fans, with open arms.

“It's definitely given us a shot in the arm,” said Charlene Leppell, owner of Twilight Central/Leppell's Flower and Gifts at 130 S. Spartan Ave. in Forks, a shop that specializes in unique Twilight items.

SSLqA reprieve'

“It gave us a little bit of a reprieve from the recession,” Leppell said.

To recognize the author's contribution to the community, the Forks Chamber of Commerce designated the weekend nearest Bella's birthday as Stephenie Meyer Day.

Unfortunately for Twilight fans who may attend the event hoping for the rain and oppressive gloom described in the books, the weekend is forecast to be sunny and warm, with highs in the low to mid-80s — causing any vampires among them to sparkle and shine.

Meyer selected Forks as Bella's home in Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn because an Internet search showed it to be the wettest, grayest town in the lower 48 states.

Meyer wrote the first book in the series in 2003.

On her website, www.stepheniemeyer.com, Meyer said:

“For my setting, I knew I needed someplace ridiculously rainy. I turned to Google, as I do for all my research needs, and looked for the place with the most rainfall in the U.S.

“I pulled up maps of the area and studied them, looking for something small, out of the way, surrounded by forest. . . . And there, right where I wanted it to be, was a tiny town called ‘Forks.'”

Meyer never laid eyes on Forks until after she completed Twilight and took a trip to her imagined world in 2004.

“It was eerily similar to my imaginings,” she wrote.

“Walking down Main Street, shopping at the Thriftway (I still have that receipt!), driving up side streets until we found a house that could have been Charlie's, and then turning the car around only to find a beat-up, once-red, early-'50s Chevy truck parked across the road.”

Charlie, Bella's father, gave Bella a once-red, early '50s Chevy pickup in Twilight.

Bridal shower

On the mind of many Twilight fans — and Forks merchants — is Bella's upcoming nuptials in the Nov. 18 release of the movie, “Breaking Dawn: Part 1.”

To recognize the impending wedding, a bridal shower in Swan's honor will be held tonight at Alice's Closet at 130 Forks Ave.

The business, named for the character Alice Cullen — a vampire who is obsessed with clothes — will host a bridal shower, which will be attended by actors playing the roles of several of the most popular characters from the books and movies.

“We'll have silly bridal shower games, like making a toilet-paper wedding gown,” said Staci Chastain, owner of Alice's Closet.

Bridal favors and Twilight-themed prizes will be awarded during the event.

The gathering began as a small gathering for a few visitors who arrived early but has grown into a major event, Chastain said.

“We've had more than 70 confirmations on Facebook.com,” she said.

Hannah and Hilly Hindi

Among the luminaries who will attend the celebration are Hannah and Hilly Hindi, creators of The Hillywood Show, which presents parodies of big box office films such as “Twilight” on www.thehillywoodshow.com.

The two will talk with fans about parody, script writing and filming during a literary symposium from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

At 3 p.m., they will join designer John Henson, owner of The Twilight Costume Collection, for photo opportunities and discussions about costuming and screen their “Twilight,” “New Moon” and “Eclipse” parodies.

Mail a souvenir

The Forks Post Office will offer a special cancellation, “Vampire Station,” while the LaPush Post Office will have a special cancellation, “Treaty Line Station.”

The event will be at Till­icum Park. The retail mobile van will be there to sell souvenir envelopes.

For those who may accompany Twilight fans to Forks but may not want to be part of the Twilight events, there is no need to despair.

One of the ideas behind scheduling Stephenie Meyer Day on this particular weekend was to give these visitors other options they might prefer, Leppell said.

West End Thunder

The final 2011 West End Thunder drag race meet will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Forks Municipal Airport, with races beginning at 10 a.m. each day.

The drag meet will include the fifth annual Nostalgia Drags and the NW BB Funnycar Association.

Admission will be $10, with 12 and younger admitt­ed free.

Also, softball enthusiasts can enjoy the 27th annual West End Invitational Co-ed Softball Tournament at Tillicum Park.

For those more interested in gastronomic fire, the Hungry Bear Cafe in Beaver, 15 miles northwest of Forks on U.S. Highway 101, will host a chili cookoff.

Forks book

A new book, with more than 200 images from the past, also will make its debut.

Images of America: Forks, a history in photographs, delves into Forks' pre-Twilight times.

Three book-signings are slated from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday at Chinook Pharmacy, 11 S. Forks Ave.

The paperback sells for $21.99 at the pharmacy; at Forks Outfitters, 950 S. Forks Ave.; and at local bookstores.

Prep For Stephenie Meyer Day in Forks

Each year Forks puts on a Stephenie Meyer themed celebration to coincide with the weekend closest to Bella’s September 13th birthday. This year they have their own website http://stepheniemeyerday.com/ Where they are rapidly filling in the details of the weekend.

The town of Forks has also made some rather necessary and practical changes to handle the influx of visitors. According to the Forks, Washington blog “The members of West End Business & Professional Association and Forks Chamber of Commerce have gone in together on two Sanicans placed downtown for the summer tourists. Merchants in the area of the stoplight had been complaining about Twilight visitors using their restrooms which are usually back in store rooms and not meant for public use.

So a regular sanican was delivered first and when the folks at West Waste and Recycling delivered the second one it had a custom paint job, I call it the “Twilight Twoilet.”

Twilight-themed eatery closes its doors in Forks

FORKS -- After nearly three years of Twilight-related events and food, the Twilight Lounge has shut its doors permanently, along with The Lodge in Forks, a 1-year-old restaurant upstairs in the same building.

The Twilight Lounge, 81 N. Forks Ave., originally opened in 2009 as a location for bands, events and gatherings for fans of the books set in Forks.

In early 2010, the owners of Dazzled By Twilight -- Annette and Tim Root -- opened the restaurant, which housed a bar and food with Twilight-themed names.

A sign in the window and a Facebook.com message announced the closure Tuesday.

"With a huge thank you to our supporters both friend and foe, the Lodge in Forks, Dungeon Bar and Twilight Lounge bid you a fond farewell," said the Facebook page at http://tinyurl.com/46cvnfl.

"It is our biggest hope for Forks that someone will come forward to further the work we have begun and take advantage of a boost up."

Dazzled By Twilight will remain open in its location at 11 N. Forks Ave. 

The Roots did not return messages left at the store for comment.

Tour operation sold

Earlier this month, the couple had announced selling the tour portion of the business to the couple who operated it, Travis and Rianilee Belles.

At that time, a statement posted online said Annette Root wanted to spend more time with her family and children.

On Jan. 11, a message was posted that alluded to theft from the store.

Annette Root decided to open Dazzled By Twilight in fall of 2008 after traveling to the town and being disappointed by the lack of Twilight merchandise.

Six weeks after her visit -- in November 2008 -- she had moved from Vancouver, Wash., and the store was opened.

Forks ponders what dawn will break after Twilight hype wanes

FORKS -- What happens after Twilight?

The concern over the possibility of a dwindling of the phenomenon -- and its tourist revenue -- dominated a question-and-answer hour with Mayor Bryon Monohon at the Forks Chamber of Commerce meeting Wednesday.

Several of the some 25 people at the meeting questioned whether Monohon and the city were bracing for the inevitable decrease in tourism after the hype over the teen novels is over.

Since 2007, tens of thousands of fans have visited Forks to view the setting of the four novels by Stephenie Meyer -- Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.

The books were subsequently made into blockbuster movies, creating even more buzz over the rainy town.

With visitation down by about 7 percent in November and December last year, the town is contemplating what the future holds, Monohon said.

Dropped numbers back

"This year when we were budgeting, we dropped the numbers back to 2008 numbers for sales tax," Monohon said.

"All we can do is monitor it and be aware that it won't last forever," Monohon said.

In 2008 and 2009, Forks received about $340,000 in sales tax.

Overall, the town gained about $450,000 in sales tax in 2010 -- with the summer months racking up the biggest numbers in the history of the city, Monohon said.

Twilight School to be torn down

‘Twilight’ High School Facade in Forks to be Destroyed

The brick facade of Quillayute Valley High School in Forks, Washington — the real-life version of the high school in Twilight — is about to disappear.

School officials had hoped to integrate the original building’s main doorway and front into the new campus set to replace the leaky, recently demolished school.

The tentative plan would have used the facade as a stand-alone entrance to the new building.

But in the construction proposal accepted on Friday, it was revealed that saving the facade would cost $271,000.

It will be destroyed.

“We would have considered a lower bid, but that’s over a quarter of a million dollars, and we can’t afford it,” said school board president Bill Rohde.

What had been for locals a beloved place of learning that dates from the 1920s became in recent years a tourist destination for Twilight fans who wanted to photograph the place where Bella Swan and Edward Cullen (played by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in the movies) first meet.

Games, races slated at Quileute Days today (***Gallery***)

LAPUSH -- The annual Quileute Days continue today with salmon, baseball, canoe races and stick games.

LaPush is the home of the Quileute tribe, and the theme of the three-day celebration, which began Friday, is "History Through Our Traditions."

The annual event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

A special guest on Saturday was actor Gil Birmingham, who plays the fictional tribal chief in all of the "Twilight" saga movies, which are based on Stephenie Meyer's four-book vampire series set in Forks, LaPush and Port Angeles.

A Jacob Black and Bella Swan look-alike contest also was part of the festivities Saturday, which wrapped up with fireworks at 10 p.m.

Today a salmon bake is planned in front of the tribal office at noon, and canoe races are scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon.

Tournaments are finishing today.

From 9 a.m. to noon, adult baseball will be played at the Coast Guard field while youth baseball will be at the Quileute Tribal Council field.

Bingo will be played at the Tribal Council office from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., while poker games are planned in the west wing from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Stick games, a traditional betting game, will run from 3 p.m. to midnight at the tribal community center.

'Twilight In Forks' EXCLUSIVE Clip: The Mitch Hansen Band Visits Forks

If you're a fan of "Twilight," it should not be news that many fans have taken "Stephenie Meyer's book series and reinterpreted it in their own creative way. Mitch Hansen and Brent Cook of The Mitch Hansen Band have reached a certain level of fame writing songs based on the "Saga," and have already released one album with another on the way.

Turns out they decided to finally visit Forks, the town at the heart of "Twilight," at the same time the guys from the "Twilight in Forks" documentary did, and we have an exclusive first look at what their meeting produced!

"This is our first time in forks and it's awesome. We love it here," Mitch said during their interview in what looks like Forks High School. " Brent added, "We kind of knew what to expect, but until you're in it and experiencing it and seeing it in person, you have no idea. It's just incredible. Breathtaking. "
They both herald from Atlanta, Ga., and couldn't help comparing the two areas to each other. The trees and beaches in Forks really impressed Mitch, as did the differences in Forks when compared to the small towns they were used to.
"Forks has been a really cool place. We're from Georgia and we've got small towns back there but they're nothing like this small town. It's got that whole lumberjack vibe going for it. It's very cool. It's an awesome place," Mitch said. Brent added, "Once you get here, the small town feel is just different from any place we've been."
Though they didn't get to see any vampires during their visit (it was sunny and 75 degrees, so not exactly prime vampire sighting weather), seeing Forks in person really brought home for Mitch and Brent how the series has created their success. "'Twilight's' been pretty good to us," Mitch acknowledged. "I think we did a fairly good job of capturing a lot of the emotions and feelings from the book, and I think people really relate to that."

EXCLUSIVE Clip: A Look Back To Stephenie Meyers' First Book Signing

Times certainly have changed since the novel "Twilight" was first released in 2005. Now, after four best-selling books and two box office-busting films, Stephenie Meyer has decided she is doing press her own way. And why not? She commands the unwavering devotion of millions, so why shouldn't she do things the way they wanted?

But in this week's clip being released on the "Twilight in Forks" iPhone app, director Jason Brown takes us back to an earlier, simpler time when the "Twilight" novel book junket consisted of Stephenie traveling to Forks, Wash. in 2006 and signing the books of 250 fans in the town's library.

"We were amazed that there were 250 people that came to sign the books and to meet Stephenie, who was perfectly charming. And it was one of the hottest days of the three years that day. I remember suffering, sweltering, in the halls that day, in the library, but Stephenie, who was charming and good-natured, stuck it out," said Marcia Bingham, the director of the Forks Chamber of Commerce.
She added that, at that point in time, Marcia and the rest of the people at the Chamber of Commerce had no idea who Stephenie even was, and had never heard of her book "Twilight."
"We were introduced to the books by our local librarian who called in 2006 and said, 'There's an author coming to town. She's written a book that takes place in Forks and I wonder if you'd like to introduce yourself to her and to find out a little bit about these books,'" Marcia recalled. "And we said sure, we'll go meet her, not knowing anything about it whatsoever, but we met Stephenie, had some pictures taken."
"We thoroughly enjoyed meeting her," she added.
The full clip also includes some fun stories about Bella's truck in Forks, and when some fans stole the gas cap right off it. Jason also gave us some exclusive news that they plan on revealing, in an official post in the app later this week, what "Gossip Girl" rebel starlet Taylor Momsen and "Twilight in Forks" have in common. 'Twilight in Forks' EXCLUSIVE: A New, Longer Trailer And An iPad/iPod App

Great minds tend to think alike, and it seems everyone has been awed over the way Stephenie Meyer's massively popular vampire saga has saved the town of Forks, Wash. where she chose to set her books.

MTV News has been following the progress of the documentary "Twilight in Forks," from its early stages and now through the DVD's release on March 20, but now we have some more exclusive news that the creators have made an Apple app to go along with their documentary.

"We built an iPhone app for the fans of 'Twilight in Forks' and 'Twilight' fans generally," explained producer York Baur. "We're pleased to say that we've got downloads from all around the world. It's a free app that allows people to explore more about Forks and 'Twilight in Forks' as well."
Baur said that the feedback they have gotten from people watching the DVD and using the app is that they want more, more, more. They're going to share some of the unused footage from "Twilight in Forks" — such as other backstories and characters — and share it to those who have downloaded the app.
Above, you'll find our exclusive new, longer look at the film's trailer. "The trailer that's been out there is a shorter, one-minute trailer and the one we're releasing is a two-and-a-half-minute trailer," Baur explained. "It goes into a little bit more depth and has a bit of a different flavor then the more commercial-oriented one that's out there."

Way back in fall of 2009, MTV News was the first to bring you news of "Twilight in Forks," an endearing documentary about the little town that helped launch a pop-culture phenomenon. Now that the movie has hit DVD and been seen by much of the "Twilight" fandom, the filmmakers are launching an iPhone app to keep the Forks fun rolling — and once again, MTV is your exclusive home.
"We built an iPhone app for the fans of 'Twilight in Forks' and 'Twilight' fans generally," explained producer York Baur when we caught up with him recently. According to the new information made available about Twilight In Forks, the film will run about 84 minutes long and come at a listing price of about $19.99. Amazon currently has it listed at $17.99, available for pre-ordering right now.
The DVD for this documentary will be released the same day as the New Moon DVD, March 20th, and its official description is as follows:

The definitive DVD documenting the town of Forks made famous by the Twilight books and movies. This is a fan’s opportunity to see the town that Stephenie Meyer based her epic teen romance books on. Hear from the real people living their lives in the town fans know and love, including the Chief of Police, the Forks Outfitters’ employee who gets mistaken for Bella, and the vampire transplant who plays the real-life role of Alice. Sign Theft in Forks

This is so not cool. Someone decided to take the sign from in front of the Forks home that has been tagged by the town as the unofficial Swan residence. It’s the second time this has happened. Additionally the Chamber of Commerce had to deal with the gas cap being stolen from the red Bella’s truck parked outside the information center.

So if anyone knows who took the sign, kindly return it! The Forks Chamber of Commerce is being very gracious and is not currently pressing charges, they just want the sign back.
Part of the appeal here is that it doesn’t look like a professinal tourism sign that is nailed down within an inch of its life (see above photo). It’s going to start to get ridiculous if they have to cement and bolt the sign down because people can’t leave what isn’t theirs alone!

A Reality Show Based Around The 'Twilight' Hometown, Forks, Could Be Coming To TV

Thanks to author Stephenie Meyer, the once little-known Western Washington hamlet of Forks has become a hotbed for "Twilight"mania. We already looked at how the franchise saved the small town from economic hardship. And documentary filmmakers recently turned their lenses on the logging community for the film "Twilight in Forks," which will be released on DVD alongside "New Moon." So it seems like the next logical step is a Forks reality show, right? Anyone?

A casting call has gone out for Forks residents (yes, you must permanently live in the town!) to try out for a proposed reality show, reports theForks Forum. Little information was given about the nature of the show, which left us imagining what some of our favorite reality shows would look like if they were given the Forks treatment...

"Survivor: Forks"

The coven has spoken! Two teams of unwitting humans are released into the vampire- and werewolf-invested forests of the Olympic Peninsula. The last contestant standing with all his/her blood and limbs in tact wins.

"Real World: Forks"

This is the true story, of seven strangers (not all entirely human), picked to live in the woods and have their lives taped, to find out what happens when vampires stop being polite and start getting real ... real bloody.

"Fork of Love"

One lucky lumberjack must date 15 logger groupies, eliminating one each week until he finds his one true Fork of Love. Weekly challenges include tree climbing, chainsaw juggling, and a flannel bikini contest.
