Paramore Roar Back With New Single, 'Monster'

Band's first song since the departure of Josh and Zac Farro seems to address breakup.

"You" can be a worrisome word. A weighty one. By its very definition — "the one or ones being addressed" — it is up for interpretation, and when it's used in a song, things get even more muddy. Does "you" refer to the listener or the public at large? Does it take the place of the subject of the lyric, someone who has wronged, inspired, doubted, betrayed the writer? Or does "you" even have to be a person? Couldn't someone "want" or "love" a refreshing beverage or an old car or, you know, drugs?

Shoot, now that we're on the subject, maybe we're never supposed to figure out who or what "you" is referring to (the classic example, of course, being Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," which is apparently about Warren Beatty ... or David Geffen ... or David Bowie, depending on whom you ask).

I only bring this up because in Paramore's brand-new song "Monster,"which premiered Friday on the band's official site, Hayley Williams uses the Y-word a lot. And given everything that has lead up to the song's debut — a string of drama that included the departure of founding member (and Williams' old flame) Josh Farro, a rather nasty "exit statement," a tell-all interview with MTV News and the band's steadfast determination tocontinue onward — it's rather impossible not to wonder who she's referring to ... especially given the existence of kiss-offs like "You were my conscience, so solid/ Now you're like water, and we started drowning/ Not like we'd sink any further" and "Now that you're gone/ The world is ours."

So, is Williams singing about Josh Farro? It's difficult to think otherwise ... then again, perhaps, like Simon, she'll never let us know. Because, really, the subject of the song isn't as important as its very existence, a statement any Paramore fan will certainly agree with. "Monster" officially kicks off the next chapter in the band's story and does so roaringly, with spindly, chiming guitars (which recall one of Williams' favorite bands, mewithoutYou), crushing chords, a massive chorus and a stalking backbeat. Based on the song, it seems like new Paramore will be very much like old Paramore, seemingly minus the drama that drained them for years. Even if we don't know who Williams' "you" is, it's good to have her — and the band — back.

MTV:Paramore Return On 'Transformers' Soundtrack With New Song, Video

Late last year, in their first interview following the departure of Josh and Zac Farro, Paramore told MTV News that they would "definitely" be releasing new music in 2011 ... a statement frontwoman Hayley Williams honed even further in February when she said that the band were planning on debuting its new, Farro-less tunes "over the summer."
And now, well ... it looks like she's a woman of her word.
Because late Monday, Paramore announced that they'd unveil a brand-new song — called "Monster" — on the upcoming Transformers: Dark of the Moon soundtrack. But that's not all. In an email to MTV News, a spokesperson for the band's labels, Atlantic/Fueled by Ramen, revealed that Paramore will also shoot a video for the song, tentatively scheduled for next month in Los Angeles.
No other information on the song or the video was available at press time. But the "Monster" video will be the second clip off the Transformers soundtrack. Last month, Linkin Park shot their video for the song "Iridescent" in Los Angeles. In addition to Paramore and Linkin Park, the album, due June 7, also features songs from My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Staind, Mastodon and, uh, the Goo Goo Dolls.
Since wrapping their South American tour in March, Paramore have been in the studio working on new music, including fleshing out an early demo for the song "In the Mourning," and, presumably, "Monster" too. Still no word on when — or how — the band will premiere those other songs to their fans.

Paramore Plan To Release New Music This Summer

Hayley Williams says band will hit the studio after wrapping South American tour in March.

Paramore just launched their much-discussed run of South American shows (their first gigs since the departure of Josh and Zac Farro in December) and now, it seems they're getting to something else they spent a whole lot of time talking about since the Farros split: making new music.

In a new interview with AOL Music, frontwoman Hayley Williams said she and her remaining Paramore mates were already making studio plans and are "hoping to record a batch of songs to release over the summer."

That announcement echoed sentiments she expressed to MTV News in December, when Williams made it clear that not only were they alreadywriting new tunes, but that they would "definitely" be releasing some of them in 2011.

And the last time we checked, "the summer" was definitely part of 2011. Williams also identified one track, "In the Mourning" — a demo of which she posted on her blog in January — as a song Paramore are focused on finishing and releasing, plus a handful of other new tracks too. Those songs would precede a brand-new album, which the band is also making plans to begin work on.

"We definitely do want to release ['In the Mourning']," she said, "And some other ones before we put out a record."

Paramore wrap their run of shows — which feature guitarist Taylor York's brother Justin and drummer-to-the-stars Josh Freese filling in for the Farros — in early March, but there's no word on where (or when) they plan on to record the new songs, or how they'll release them. A spokesperson for the band's labels, Atlantic/ Fueled By Ramen, could not be reached for comment about Paramore's plans by press time.

Exclusive: Paramore Say They're 'Not A Manufactured Band'

Paramore are not a real band. Hayley Williams is a glorified solo artist and an easily manipulated one at that. Brand New Eyes, the group's to-the-brink-and-back 2009 album, did not close the Tennessee-size divides that had emerged between Williams and her mates (as she had previously told MTV News); it only made them larger. The album was not a new beginning but, rather, the beginning of the end.

So claimed Josh Farro, in his now-infamous "Exit Statement" from Paramore, which turned what had been an amicable separation into a nasty, venomous split. Understandably, the remaining members of the band — Williams, guitarist Taylor York and bassist Jeremy Davis — were hurt by Farro's words, as they told us when we sat down with them last week in their hometown of Franklin for their only interview about the split.
But they were also more than ready to address Farro's charges. And in MTV News' "Paramore: The Last Word," a live stream on MTV.com on Friday, January 7, at 4 p.m. ET, they do — starting, appropriately enough, at the beginning, when Paramore say they were just another band looking for their big break. Farro sees it differently, writing that, even in those early days, the band was all about Williams; she was the one shopped to record labels, while the rest of the group were treated as second-class citizens. And when a contract finally was signed with Atlantic/ Fueled by Ramen, it was only Williams' name on the dotted line.
So what's the truth? Are Paramore really just a solo act? Well, according to Williams, they never have been, and they never will be.
"When I was 14, I was offered a contract, but my heart wasn't to be a solo artist; my heart was to be in a band," she said. "I mean, since I [was] a kid, I've always just wanted to be in a band. I didn't even want to be the singer; I wanted to be the drummer, so I could be behind everything. And that's what I fought for, and that's what we've made it. And that's why it seemed so irrelevant that everything was being pointed out [in Farro's statement]. I mean, we've been honest about it, and we are a band, and, to me, it doesn't matter if there's a name on a contract. I hate business, it's the last thing I ever want to talk about. So when that was brought up in the blog, I just felt like, 'Man, fans shouldn't care or need to hear about this stuff,' because all that does is get in the way of music."
That, of course, brings us to perhaps the nastiest barb in Farro's statement: his accusation that Paramore are nothing more than "a manufactured product of a major label." It's a line that calls into question everything the band have accomplished over the past six-plus years, and, not surprisingly, it was also the one the band couldn't wait to answer.
"We're not a manufactured band. We've dealt with that rumor for a long time, and that's because of the rumors of Fueled by Ramen and Atlantic's relationship. We've always talked about that ... saying, you know, when we started, I again fought for something that we could really work hard and start from the ground," Williams said. "That's the kind of music that I love, and that's the kind of music we've all shared interest in since day one, and we wanted to be that kind of band, we wanted to be those kind of people that worked for whatever they were going to get. We didn't know it would turn into this. Thank God it did, because we got to experience so many cool things."
