The Bree Tanner’ Book to be a movie?

Jodelle Ferland sure thinks there's a good possibility!

The Twilight saga may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean our fanged friends can’t return for an encore! Jodelle Ferland, who played new vampire Bree Tanner in Eclipse, told HollywoodLife.com about the chances of turning Stephenie Meyers‘ novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner into a movie. “I hope they’ll make a movie,” she told us March 10 at the 31st Annual Genie Awards. “It’s definitely a possibility.”

2010 In Review: 'The Twilight Saga' Continued Its Vampiric Reign

Last year we listed off the movies, TV shows and other pop-cult gems we were most excited for in 2010, and though the Wizarding World of Harry Potter got the top spot (come on, it's atheme park), "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" was the movie we were most looking forward to. It's been a big year for "The Twilight Saga," and "Eclipse" definitely did not disappoint. As another year of "Twilight"'s domination is about to begin, we figured now would be a good time to look back at the series' biggest moments in 2010.

"New Moon" had hit theaters only several months before, but "The Twilight Saga" started 2010 off with a bang when there was reportedly some drama between Stephenie Meyer and Summit Entertainment over "Breaking Dawn," though the "Twilight" author quickly dispelled that rumor. That was followed closely with producer Wyck Godfrey's announcement that "Breaking Dawn" was gearing up to film the coming fall. We were all holding on to every will-they-won't-they rumor (3D? CGI Renesmee? One or two films?), and it took the majority of the year for any of those questions to be answered.

While we waited for more "Breaking Dawn" news, Summit announced the "New Moon" release dateand two "Twilight" stars went from dating to engaged. In February we learned that we'd get a trailerfor "Eclipse" before RPattz's other film "Remember Me," and found out why Robert is bothered.

A month later we got a teaser for that trailer, and then had to wait six days until we got the full-length version. We were all pretty thrilled when we found out the trailer showed Bella's engagement ring, but that was nothing compared to the excitement we felt when Stephenie Meyer announced she was releasing a novella about Bree Tanner.

While all that was unfolding, there were still a lot of questions being asked about "Breaking Dawn." Three directors had been short-listed for the job, and the stars were pretty excited about them. On April 28 director Bill Condon was chosen for the honor. Bill convinced fans he was the man for the job by writing them a letter, and an official release date announcement came soon after. Hello, November 18, 2011!

But we weren't the only ones with "Twilight" fever; Oprah caught the bug too! First she premiered an epic new "Eclipse" trailer and then showed some lucky fans an early cut of "Eclipse". Audience members gave us the inside scoop on her special "Eclipse"-themed episode, too.

There was more "Breaking Dawn" drama when rumors hit the web that Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz might not be returning for the final "Twilight Saga" film, but those were quickly resolved. And, with a month left until "Eclipse" hit theaters, the soundtrack listing was finally revealed. As if we couldn't get any more excited for the film, it was announced that Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner were going to be presenting a new clip from the film at the MTV Movie Awards, and we totally loved it when they did. It helped that "New Moon" swept the awards show as well.

By the time June finally rolled around, we had two things to look forward to: "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner" and "Eclipse." We camped out all night for both, and both surpassed our expectations.

With "Eclipse" out, all the focus could now shift to the final film in the "Twilight" series. Or rather, two films. "Breaking Dawn" was announced as a two-parter and the second half would be released on November 16, 2012. Wyck Godfrey also leaked that Robsten are totally an item, and we found out "Twilight" could be the most successful film franchise ever, on top of the fact that vamps have made $7 billion since 2008.

Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg hinted that there might not be a birthing scene, but she quickly retracted that statement and instead started talking about all of "Breaking Dawn"'s new vampires. There are a lot of them, and they're pretty much all cast by now. Unfortunately, James Franco wasn't one of them. But the most important casting announcement was that 9-year-old Mackenzie Foy would play Bella and Edward's daughter, Renesmee.

"Breaking Dawn" filming is now underway, and we've seen awesome paparazzi pictures of Bella and Edward's honeymoon and the Volturi hanging out. Of course, we also found out why Bella is covered in feathers. The "Eclipse" DVD release got us looking forward to a whole new year of "Breaking Dawn" news as we count down the next 11 months until the first film hits theaters. After all, there's soundtracks to be announced, awards shows to sweep and relationships to cross our fingers for in the meantime, and probably lots of "Twilight"-related fodder we can't even begin to anticipate.

NEW YORK, NY (December 13, 2010) – Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, a division of Hachette Book Group, and Stephenie Meyer have donated 1.5 million dollars to the American Red Cross International Response Fund from their proceeds from The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: an Eclipse Novella. As previously announced, one dollar for each book sold in the US from the first printing would go to the American Red Cross. The donation was made today by Hachette Book Group CEO David Young and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers Publisher Megan Tingley to The American Red Cross Senior Vice President of International Services David Meltzer.

Books: They’re just like movies, only without CGI. 

So it’s no wonder that over the past century, Hollywood has consistently turned to books to provide the basis for some of its best works. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” for instance, was based on a book, while “Gigli” wasn’t.  See how that works?

‘Water for Elephants’

RPattz is slated to play the young man, with Hal Holbrook playing the older version and Reese Witherspoon on board as the love interest. Finally, an older woman with a younger man; it’s about time, Hollywood!

‘The Help’

Status: Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel about how race impacted relationships in the Deep South of the 1960s was an instant hit with critics and fans alike, which explains why Disney rushed the story into production so quickly. Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Emma Stone play the three central figures in this moving drama, which also features stars such as Bryce Dallas Howard and Cicely Tyson in supporting roles. Stockett’s close personal friend Tate Taylor is handling the directing duties after wisely gobbling up the film rights before the book was published. Smooth move, bro.

‘Breaking Dawn’

Status: Author Stephenie Meyer penned this obscure little novel a few years ago, to little fanfare, but now it’s… oh, who are we kidding. You probably already know everything there is to know about the eagerly awaited adaptation of the fourth and final (?) novel in Meyer’s record-shattering “Twilight” series. The action is so big this time around, though, that they had to break it into two parts; the second half of the story won’t land in theaters until Nov. 16, 2012.

‘On the Road’

Attached: Kirsten Dunst, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen
Status: Based on the classic 1951 beat novel by Jack Kerouac, “On the Road” has been adapted for the screen several times, but few of those productions have the kind of acting pedigree this latest version can boast: Besides big names like Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams and Kristen Stewart, critical favorites like Steve Buscemi, Elisabeth Moss and Terrence Howard help round out the terrific cast. Filming is set to finish in December, so the first trailer should be gracing the internet before too much longer.

The Host’

Status: Niccol (“Gattaca,” “Lord of War”) has been chosen to spearhead the latest adaptation from “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer. “The Host” tells the story of an alien who comes to Earth an inhabits a girl’s body, which sets in motion a whole slew of really complicated romantic entanglements due to the whole split personality type thing. But with aliens. We’re sure that Meyer’s legion of fans are probably already waiting in line for this one, but while we’re just as excited, we’re not quite ready to get our sleeping bag out just yet; casting hasn’t yet begun, so it will likely be more than a year before this actually hits theaters.

‘The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner’

Status: So what is Hollywood going to do once “The Twilight Saga” has ended? Easy: make more “Twilight” movies anyway. At least, that’s the rumor that surfaced this fall, as “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” is apparently being bandied about by The Powers That Be for its own full-length film adaptation. Jodelle Ferland played the doomed Bree in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” but unless they go into production right away, chances are she’ll be too old to play Bree by the time they get the ball rolling. Darn those ageless vampires!

‘If I Stay’

Status: Scripting is currently underway for the adaptation of Gayle Forman’s acclaimed 2009 young adult novel “If I Stay,” which tells the story of a girl involved in a catastrophic car accident; stuck in a coma, she has an out-of-body experience that shows her the consequences of the crash, forcing her to decide whether to return to life or not. Dakota Fanning is rumored to be in discussions to play the lead role of Mia, but nothing has yet been made official, including the release date.

Bree Tanner Twilight Spin-Off?

I don't think so because it was already said that they included Bree Tanner into Eclipse.  So there would be no major point in having another film when it has already been covered.  But thats just my opinion.
Summit Set for Bree Tanner Twilight Spin-Off?
Will Twilight Saga fans see a Bree Tanner spin-off? As fans of The Twilight Saga already know, Breaking DawnPart 1 and Breaking Dawn Part 2 will be the last two films of the Twilight franchise. However, Breaking Dawndoesn't mean that Summit Entertainment will let The Twilight Saga fade from the big screen? Now word comes down the Twilight pike that there may be a Bree Tanner spin-off in the works.

According to What’s Playing, Summit Entertainment may be looking to continue The Twilight Saga after Breaking Dawn with a spin-off focused on the Twilight character, Bree Tanner. In an e-mail received by an anonymous scooper, the outlet revealed that Summit Entertainment could go forward with a series of Bree Tanner films after the Twilight Saga wraps. "It goes without saying Summit want to continue this franchise… Tanner is the one they're looking at post-Breaking Dawn."
Although the Bree Tanner Twilight Saga spin-off is nothing more than wishful thinking at this point, Stephenie Meyer has already released the Twilight companion novella, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner.
It doesn't take a Twilight Saga genius to figure out that Bree Tanner may see the big screen on her own.

Xavier hopes for 'Bree Tanner' film

Xavier Samuel has admitted that he "would kill" to return to the Twilight franchise in a Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner movie.

The actor told DS at Eclipse's UK premiere that he would be keen to star in a movie based on Stephenie Meyers's Twilight companion novella.

"I don't know, I can only hope," he said. "I would kill to be a part of these stories for longer, you never know!"

However, Eclipse director David Slade cast doubt on seeing a big screen adaptation of the book because author Meyers does not watch R-rated movies.

"It's really violent," Slade told journalists at a UK press conference when asked about Bree Tanner. "I remember talking to Stephenie about it and saying I thought it would make a decent movie but it would have to be R-rated because there's so much description of violence. She only watches PG-13 movies, she won't watch R-rated movie, she refuses.source

'Eclipse' Premiere: Jodelle Ferland Was 'Lucky' To Have 'Bree Tanner' Novella

Last night was a big night for Jodelle Ferland, who got to see "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" for the first time at the film's premiere. Her character, Bree Tanner, has received plenty of attention sinceStephenie Meyer announced the newborn vampire would be receiving her own spin-off novella, and, as we know, Jodelle got to read the story ahead of time.

"I was so lucky I got to read it before I started filming so that I could know a lot more about Bree because I knew almost nothing about her," she told MTV News.

The reason why Stephenie was so excited to write Bree's story was to show that not all newborn vampires are the same, which is a bit of foreshadowing for Bella in "Breaking Dawn." Jodelle was glad that Bree was allowed to be more fleshed out than the other bad vamps.

"Well, Bree, she's definitely not like all the other newborns. They are kind of driven by their thirst — they're newborns, that's typical behavior — and inside, she doesn't really want to be a bad person, she's willing to change her ways," she said.

Like Jodelle, director David Slade told us he received a copy of "Short Second Life" during production, too, but he says it helped in an entirely different way.

"One of the things in the 'Bree Tanner' story is that one of the hangouts is very close to water and so we specifically went after locations that were near water," he said adding that he also used Riley and Victoria's choice of newborns to help him during casting. "They take the dregs of society ... they take, not the dregs, but the people that won't be missed. They take the prostitutes, they take drug addicts, they take people on the street, so we cast people to look like that. It was fun."

David Slade Explains How The 'Bree Tanner' Book Ties Into The Movie

A couple weeks back, after "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner" was released, we came up with a list of scenes we figured (and hoped) would make it into the final cut of the film. According to director David Slade, though, we shouldn't get our hopes to high.

He received a copy of "Short Second Life" about halfway through pre-production on "Eclipse," and said that what it affected more than anything was the location and casting choices for the film.

"One of the things in the 'Bree Tanner' story is that one of the hangouts is very close to water and so we specifically went after locations that were near water," he said as an example, with tied in with our earlier article.
Beyond that, he said that he used Riley and Victoria's choice of newborn vampires to inform their casting decisions. "They take the dregs of society," he said as a way of explanation. "They take, not the dregs, but the people that won't be missed. They take the prostitutes, they take drug addicts, they take people on the street, so that we cast people to look like that. It was fun."
What that makes it sound like is that we won't be seeing too many of those scenes we guessed we could in "Eclipse," though there might be a bigger reason for that, and maybe David isn't completely done with the world of "The Twilight Saga" after "Eclipse."
"We didn't actually skew the entire film to fit ['Short Second Life']," he said. "I maintain that little book will [still] make a great film."

'Twilight' Narrator Showdown: We Compare Bella To 'Short Second Life' Voice, Bree

With "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner," we've reached new ground in "The Twilight Saga."Unlike the as yet unfinished "Midnight Sun," this is our first published look into exploring Stephenie Meyer's world of vampires, werewolves and romance beyond Bella's perspective, and also a good sign that there will be more spin-offs to come.

But, after four novels and more than 2500 pages, it's a little bit jarring to be reading a female narrator's perspective that isn't Bella's. Sure, fans who read 2008's "The Host" have had some experience with reading through the eyes of other characters Stephenie created, but it was a little, well, weird to be watching events unfold through Bree's eyes.

BOTH ARE BOOK WORMS

One thing's for sure, though: Stephenie likes her main characters to have specific certain characteristics. We all know Bella was a big reader, and each of the novels in "The Twilight Saga" borrows themes from those she reads in the books. Well, Bree is no different, it seems. Since she can somewhat control the bloodthirsty desires that drives the other newborns to violence, Bree spends most of her days inside reading books. And it doesn't matter which book, either, because by the time we meet her she has already made her way up to the "H" section in the fiction section of the local Seattle bookstore.

BOTH ARE LONE RANGERS

Also like Bella, Bree is a something of an awkward loner, though this is more because she is trying to remain unnoticed to survive than because she is socially uncomfortable. It's not a big surprise that these are two characteristics that Stephenie passes on to her narrators, because we know that they are two traits that Stephenie had herself when she was that age.

BOTH ARE EVENTUALLY TURNED INTO VAMPS — ONLY BREE IS A FEISTY ONE

However, Bree is the little, violent newborn vampire that Bella never got to be. Bree doesn't have a special gift as a vampire, just a lot of lies and manipulation surrounding her and a good head on her shoulders. Because she doesn't have the Cullens to guide her, Bree never thought of doing anything other than attacking and killing humans because why should a super sexy, strong vampire ever need to do that? Stephenie has admitted in interviews that she liked writing Bree's story because it does give her readers a chance to see a side of the vampire world that they never saw before.

BOTH HAVE ROMANTIC FEELINGS FOR A COLD ONE

While Bree is more independent and, arguably, a stronger female lead than Bella, it was a little bit of a letdown that she was somewhat reliant on her romantic interest, Diego. It wasn't until she started talking with him that they began to realize the lies Riley and Victoria had woven (vampires don't burn in the sunlight, for one; they sparkle) and the real reason that they were created. However, unlike Bella's relationship with Edward, Bree looked to Diego for guidance not only because he was an older vampire than she was, but also because two heads were better than one.

We're never going to see another story from Bree's perspective, but it gave us an interesting tease at how exciting other "Twilight Saga" spinoffs could end up being.

Why did Stephenie Meyer write Bree Tanner?

Stephenie Meyer's novella "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner," a vampire-side addition to her Twilight series, can be read online for the next four weeks, for free. And readers who want an offline version can also buy the hardcover.
Selling books, though, shouldn't be much of a concern for Meyer. She's earned almost as many devoted fans as Harry Potter, and her books -- individually and packaged as sets -- have enjoyed many, many, many weeks on bestseller lists.
So what compelled her to write the new novella? The story of the new vampires -- newborns, in her parlance -- as she explains to USA Today:

While I was writing Eclipse, there was a lot going on behind the scenes, of course, things Bella didn't know about. Because I was focused on Bella, I couldn't delve too deeply into the newborns' story, however, there was always in my mind a general idea of what they were up to. I had to think about that while I was pacing the plot: Bella is at this point, the newborns are doing this. To keep it all straight, eventually I made a calendar of the months of May and June — which is all Eclipse deals with — and wrote down on each square what was going on with Bella that day and what was happening in Seattle. So the story of the newborns was always a big part of the story of Eclipse. And it made me kind of sad that there was no way to express any of that in the book.

Maybe, as critic Lizzie Skurnick suggests at Salon, the story would have been better left unexpressed.

In the introduction to "The Short Second Life," Meyer tells us, "Writing Bree was the first time I'd stepped into the shoes of a narrator who was a 'real' vampire -- a hunter, a monster." Wanting to stretch beyond supernatural beings who endear themselves to us with their winning traits is a worthy goal, but for those accustomed to Cullens and Blacks, life as a real-life monster, I am sorry to report, seems dismal indeed....
Meyer's talents lie not in filling in her characters' backgrounds but in maintaining them in a constant state of exquisite torment. Intelligent and gifted, Bella, Jacob and Edward are intrinsically glamorous to readers. But Bree is PVT (poor vampire trash) and she knows it. Unqualified to even understand her situation, much less change it, she inspires empathy in the reader, but not a whole lot of anticipation.

The 'Eclipse' Scenes We Predict Will Be Taken Straight From 'Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner' (Spoilers)

When the release date for "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner" was announced as June 5, it didn't seem like much of a coincidence that the date so closely preceded the June 30 release of "Eclipse." Well, in a recent interviewwith USA Today, Stephenie Meyer flat out said that she wanted the book to get out before the film's release because some elements from the novella would be used in "Eclipse."

After reading "Short Second Life," it was easy to pick out some scenes that were most likely to make it into the film, as well as to realize that some already have. It's sort of a tongue-in-cheek move, because while those who haven't read Stephenie's newest installment will think that the newborn vampire scenes were David Slade's creative vision, those who have will get a kick out of seeing Bree's story come to life. Be wary, because there are plenty of spoilers for "Short Second Life" after the jump, but click on to see the scenes we found most likely to be in "Eclipse."

Probably in "Eclipse": The newborns' basement hide out

In "Short Second Life," the newborn vampires are told a string of lies so Riley and Victoria can keep them under control easier, and one of them is that the sun will destroy any vampire that steps in it. Obviously, in Stephenie's universe, we know this isn't the case, and the worst affect the sun will have on a vampire is a blinding sparkle. Riley keeps the newborns in basements during the daytime so they can have a base to return to in order to stay out of the sun all day, and we're sure that we'll be seeing some scenes in there during the course of the film.

Already in "Eclipse": Newborns ransacking Seattle

The first scene in "Short Second Life" follows Bree as she is out on a hunt with some of her fellow newborns. There's Kevin and "Spider-man" (a blond whose name Bree doesn't know), as well as Diego, who Bree ends up falling for. Kevin starts causing trouble and flips a car over so he can feed on its driver, and he and Spider-man start tearing the poor woman apart for her blood. Bree stands off to the side while they do this, full of thirst but not willing to fight the two of them for a slim amount of blood, and then she and Diego take off for better hunting. Fortunately, we've already seen a variation of this scene in a clip we got (a snapshot is taken from it above), and it turns out the Volturi were watching the newborns the whole time.

Probably in "Eclipse": The Volturi confronting Victoria and Riley

Did you know that, despite Jane's naïve claims at the end of "Eclipse" that Victoria and her army escaped Volturi attention, the Volturi actually knew the entire time? Probably, if you've seen the clip mentioned above. But, even worse than that, it turns out that the Volturi actually confrontVictoria and let her continue her path of destruction because they want her to kill the Cullens! This scene almost shocked us more than it did the eavesdropping Bree and Diego in "Short Second Life," and we're betting our pennies that this new twist of events makes its way into "Eclipse."

Already in "Eclipse": Newborns following Riley through water

Turns out that chillingly awesome, George Romero-esque scene in the "Eclipse" trailer where the newborns walk through a body of water behind Riley is right out of "Short Second Life" too, on pages 117 and 118:

Riley paused at the water's edge… He dove smoothly into the surf. The others were growling excitedly as they submerged, too… We didn't swim long, and then we saw the others kicking upward. Fred and I [Bree] surfaced last, and Riley started talking as soon as our heads were out of the water.

Since we haven’t seen how the water scene fits into the context of "Eclipse" yet, we can't tell if David Slade just took the visual from "Short Second Life" for the film or actually used the entire scene as well. In the novella, Riley is leading the newborns to a feeding frenzy on a nearby ferry, and that's why they're near water. However, in the trailer, it seems as though Riley is leading the newborns to the final battle with the Cullens, especially since they seem to be walking in the daytime, albeit under cloud cover. Still, the second we read that scene we knew exactly where we would be seeing its visual equivalent in the film.

Probably in "Eclipse": Carlisle stopping Bree in the woods

We all know Carlisle and Edward team up to try to save Bree from her inevitable death at the hands of the Volturi, but what we don't get to see in "Eclipse" from Bella's perspective is the moment when Carlisle almost kills Bree himself, but then she surrenders and he chooses to let her "live." This moment is, of course, in "Short Second Life," and will most likely be included in the film to flesh out Bree's final moments.

'Bree Tanner' book Is Actually The Perfect Length: The Book Report

Expectations weren't as high this time. It was like we were getting a surprise piece of chocolate with our dinner bill, not a complimentary dish of crème brulée. Still, "Twilight" fans haven't had any new books to look forward to in almost two years, so we were excited and hopeful about "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner." And I, at least, was not disappointed by the little novella. Pleasantly surprised, even.
As much as I was addicted to the "Twilight" saga, I wasn't oblivious to its flaws. Stephenie Meyer could spend dozens of pages describing Bella doing her homework and making dinner, when we'd really rather skip to the vampire-werewolf drama going on outside. And as much as we've been drawn in by the heart-wrenching scenes between human and cold one, even those could get overwrought and repetitive. But here, in this 178-page little tale, Meyer has no time to get too gooey or bogged down in details. We're dropped right into the bloody action.

Bree Tanner, a runaway who's not sure if she reached her 16th birthday before Riley promised her a hamburger and turned her into a bloodthirsty killing machine instead, is probably one of the most tragic characters Meyer has ever created. Even as a super-strong vampire, she's constantly in danger of being ripped apart and destroyed by the other newborns, whose complete savagery seems to be encouraged by the coven's leaders.
Since we already know she dies at the end, we should be able to brace ourselves and not get too attached to the doomed girl. But as we get to know her, we can't help hoping that maybe "Eclipse" got it wrong. At the beginning of the story, she's offered a tiny glimmer of hope, a way out of the nonstop thirst and fear of her new life when a slightly older vampire Diego takes her under his wing. He's not just an animal like the former gang members and junkies they're forced to live with. And their mutual discovery that instead of burning to a crisp in the sun, they glitter like disco balls, is a touching moment that rivals the Bella-Edward meadow scene. It's seriously torturous to watch Bree become enlightened, and even empowered, while also knowing that she's days away from the end of this short second life.
Aside from an interesting character study, the story is also meant to give us a glimpse at the other side of the battle in "Eclipse." SPOILERS AHEAD: The newborns have been lied to by Riley, manipulated into being dependent on him and scared to death to disobey any orders that have come down from "her" — because of the Cullens' special powers, Victoria knows better than to let her army so much as think her name. They live like a band of directionless, homeless youth; which they are. And actually, the Cullens aren't the only ones with special powers. Among the newborns is Freaky Fred, whose ability to repel everyone to the point that he's invisible allows him to protect Bree and ultimately to escape the coven. How much would you love a little spin-off of Fred's adventures in Vancouver now?
Three interesting revelations: 1) Victoria is aware of Alice's ability to see the future, so it's on purpose that she doesn't make up her mind how to attack until the last minute. And, 2) Jane and her entourage actually visit Victoria and give her five days to enact her battle plan before the Volturi would destroy the newborn army. 3) As a surrendered Bree is being interrogated by Jane following the fight, she manages to figure out that Edward reads minds and conveys to him that the Volturi weren't entirely on the Cullens' side.
The battle scene itself is brief and confusing — we got more brutal detail from the newborns' hunts. But if the point of this novella is to give a new perspective to a story we already know, I think "Bree Tanner" succeeded nicely. And I can't wait to see how it comes into play when "Eclipse" makes it to the big screen in a few weeks.

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner Is Out Now, How Did You Celebrate?

NEW YORK — There were no special concerts, no multi-city publicity tours and no camera crews this time. Stephenie Meyer wasn't sitting at a table waiting to sign copies. But to the 20 or so Twilighters lined up outside the Borders at Penn Plaza, the midnight release of "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner" was still a pretty big deal. And instead of all the fanfare that had surrounded the release of "Breaking Dawn" almost two years ago, they had a couple of quiet, muggy hours in which to make new friends.
At 10 p.m., closing time for the bookstore that shares the block with Madison Square Garden and sits atop the chaos of Penn Station, fans were asked to wait outside the door. At the front of the line were two unlikely Twi-hards: big, burly men in their 20s, who decided to surprise their girlfriends with copies, since they hadn't been able to come out themselves.

"She was so disappointed she couldn't come," Ricardo Ortiz said of his "obsessed" girlfriend. He came up with the idea and brought along his friend, who chose to remain anonymous in this romantic gesture.
Erin O'Kane, 28, and Allison Ortiz (no relation to Ricardo), 20, were clearly there for themselves. They had been surprised when this novella was announced in March. And though they kind of wished they were waiting for the release of "Midnight Sun" (the unfinished "Twilight" story from Edward's perspective), they were eager to read about the ill-fated newborn vampire who appears so briefly in "Eclipse."
"[Meyer is] back in that place where she's all about 'Twilight' again, after taking a break for so long," Allison observed. "She's been on the set of the movies, so she's in a place now where she can think about it more, and she chose to write about one of the most random [characters] that you wouldn't expect at all."
If "Bree Tanner" is as good as she expects it to be, Erin is hoping for more novellas about some of the other minor characters. "Tanya would be great," she said. "Same thing with Victoria. We don't know how Victoria came to be."
"It doesn't have to be a long book, just a little something would be great," said Jessie Cores, 35, supporting the idea of more stories about the other characters. She was just as enthusiastic for the book as her 17-year-old daughter, Nikki, and Nikki's friend Shana Martinez. All of them planned on reading "Bree Tanner" as soon as they bought it.
"I'm not going to read it as fast, because you want to savor it," Shana said. "I'm going to have to pry it away from myself."
A little before 11:30, the Borders reopened, and everyone entered a raffle to win a place at the front of the line and a signed bookplate to place in the 200-page novella. Little Brown publicity director Elizabeth Eulberg was asked to pick the winner. It was 27-year-old Miriam Garcia, who was so stunned she almost didn't speak up when her name was called.
"I have to go to work in the morning," lamented the pharmacy tech, when asked if she'd be reading the book as soon as she got home. But even if she had to wait to finish the story, she enjoyed the social aspect of the midnight release.
"It's thanks to 'Twilight' that I have friends," she said, before stepping up to receive her gift-wrapped prize and buy an extra copy for one of those friends.
