A Warrior's Heart: Lacrosse Film Reminds Fans of Positive Power of Sports

Like any sport, lacrosse can serve as a metaphorical training ground for life, on the field of which one’s heart is shaped and hardened into that of a warrior.

That’s precisely what happens to Conor Sullivan in the new film  A Warrior’s Heart, a California Pictures production, starring Kellen Lutz and Ashley Green of Twilight fame.

Lutz plays the part of Conor, a precocious lacrosse-playing high schooler with a hot temper whose life is turned upside down when his family moves from California to Virginia and his father is killed while on active duty in Iraq.

These dramatic changes lead Conor to act out his frustrations, both on and off the field, and it’s not long before his transgressions get him kicked off the team at Brierfield Academy and into a cell for destroying school property.

A week spent in the wilderness doing physical labor with his father’s combat companion, Sgt. Major Duke Wayne, helps to refashion Conor’s perspective on his life, with lacrosse serving as the vessel through which those lessons are learned.

SPOILER ALERT: In the end, the guy gets the girl, the team wins the championship, and everyone goes home happy, but what’s more important than the sports movie archetype retold is the deeper meaning that any sports fan—nay, any human being—can connect with.

It’s about struggling with yourself before you can struggle with teammates and opponents alike.

It’s about channeling fury and intensity into productivity, turning emotion into positive motion.

It’s about using the arena of competition as a classroom for important lessons about maturity, cooperation and perseverance.

But don’t take my word for it.

See it for yourself.

Watch it with your family.

You might laugh, you might cry.

Most of all, you might (or rather will) find that the way to a warrior’s heart is through his or her competitive spirit, which, in turn, is the product of the obstacles that he or she faces and overcomes.

The Best Movie Kisses of 2011

Cute couples puckered up all over the screen in 2011; whether it was a fun romantic comedy or a sexy drama, some of Hollywood's best-looking actors got to make out with each other. And because it's always fun to relive those PDA moments, we've made a slideshow of the big-screen kisses of 2011.

Peter and Valerie, Red Riding Hood

Even though a ferocious wolf is terrorizing their village, Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) and Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) find some time to have a hot and heavy makeout session.

Marlena and Jacob, Water For Elephants

Marlena (Reese Witherspoon) and Jacob (Robert Pattinson) defy the obstacles (like the fact that she's married) to get a circus romance on.

Gil and Inez, Midnight in Paris

Gil (Owen Wilson) is the ultimate romantic, wishing he lived in another time, and he takes his fiancée Inez (Rachel McAdams) to Paris's most wonderful settings to kiss her. They may not work out, but how dreamy is this kiss?

The Earl of Oxford and Queen Elizabeth, Anonymous

The Earl of Oxford (Jamie Campbell Bower) might have written Shakespeare's plays, and he's also guilty of making Queen Elizabeth I's (Joely Richardson) heart palpitate.

Brooklyn and Conor, A Warrior's Heart

They may play siblings in the Twilight movies, but in this high school sports flick, Brooklyn (Ashley Greene) and Conor (Kellan Lutz) are free to get it on.

Jacob and Anna, Like Crazy

Young lovers Jacob (Anton Yelchin) and Anna (Felicity Jones) share a sweet kiss before starting a bittersweet long-distance relationship.

A Warrior's Heart Review

My Personal review of A Warrior's Heart.  I did my best to keep this spoiler free.  I want to start out by saying that ever since the project was first filmed, I was excited to see the finished project.  The onset photos and interviews made it look very interesting and I wanted to see how Kellan and Ashley's friendship transferred onto on-screen chemistry.  Throughout the last few weeks there have been lots of promotional stuff being sent out around the internet and that only peaked my interest more and it did not disappoint.  So here is my review:

Even though Kellan plays the main character of the story, Ashley is the one narrating and it adds another layer to the story coming from her point of view.  I can honestly say I cried multiple times throughout.  Kellan is brilliant and proves he is leading man material. He takes you through the journey of becoming the man he is meant to be and you can't help but root for him.  When Kellan cries, it is so moving, you can feel his pain.  Even if his portrayal doesn't get you crying (and it should its that good) the music will.  The song selection is spot on and really lets you know what the producers want you to feel.  There is a great moment between Kellan and Ashley in a car that is just so moving, the connection between the two is magnetic.  When the two of them have a scene together the chemistry is powerful and translates on screen well.  While Kellan pulls off the more serious parts we still get to see his fun loving side and hear some great wise cracks that we are all used to.  Plus you do get to see him shirtless at some points which is never bad lol.  The ending was perfect and the last image was breath taking in my opinion. There are a few twists that I didn't see coming (I am pretty good at guessing twists) that gave more of a background to the story as a whole.  I guess what I am trying to say is if you are looking for a good heartfelt movie, or if you are just fan of Ashley or Kellan's, this is a must see.

Kellan Lutz gets close to Ashley Greene in 'A Warrior's Heart'

Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene might play brother and sister in "The Twilight Saga," but that pair get romantic in their new film, "A Warrior's Heart.

In the film, which has a limited release on December 2nd, follows Lacrosse player Conor Sullivan who enters a new school and acts out after his father's death fighting in the Marines and is disciplined in a wilderness camp by his father's combat buddy.

"I really feel like I've matured as an actor doing this movie," Lutz said in a featurette for the film, provided by Xenon Pictures. "That's the opportunity I've been looking for because it really forces me to learn how to draw from your past and to really be in the moments and react and it's such a great story."

Greene portrays Brooklyn, a cheerleader who falls for Sullivan. The actress and Lutz portray vampire siblings Alice and Emmett Cullen in the "Twilight" movies.

"All the romance stuff? It's easy, it's great. It's so nice to already come in and know someone and be comfortable enough to do stuff like that," Greene said of starring opposite Lutz in a featurette for the film. "But I've never been in a setting where I've seen Kellan cry -- I didn't realize how much that affects me! I'm sitting in the car and I was like, this isn't my scene, I'm not supposed to cry, but I wanted to cry seeing him. It's so great, I was like, 'You killed it! You made me want to cry.'"

The film also stars former "Glee" star Chord Overstreet and former "Greek" actor Aaron Hill.

Greene and Lutz most recently appeared in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I," which hit theaters on November 18 and as of November 27, had earned $489.3 million worldwide. The final installment of vampire films, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II," is set for release on November 16, 2012.

Greene broke up with Joe Jonas, 21, in March after dating for almost a year. Since becoming single, Greene has been romantically linked to "Twilight" actor Jackson Rathbone and Kings of Leon bassist Jared Followill.

The 24-year-old actress is set to appear on ABC's period drama "Pan Am," in a three-episode arc, the network confirmed in November.

Lutz, 26, also recently appeared opposite Henry Cavil and Mickey Rourke in "Immortals." He is currently filming "Java Heat" opposite Rourke. The film follows an American in Indonesia who joins forces with a police officer to track down a terrorist.

Aside from the vampire franchise, Lutz has also appeared in films like "Prom Nights," "A Nightmare on Elm Street," "A Warrior's Heart" and "Love, Wedding, Marriage."
