'The Art Of Getting By' Trailer: Freddie Highmore Displays Leading Man Potential Opposite Emma Roberts

If you simply know English actor "Freddie Highmore as the pint-sized musical prodigy from "August Rush" (or even Charlie in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"), prepare to meet the grown-up, leading-man-in-training Freddie in the upcoming "The Art of Getting By" (formerly called "Homework").

Freddie stars as lost soul/high school slacker George, a budding artist who's made it all the way to his senior year without ever completing a homework assignment (hence the film's title). When he's finally put on academic probation, he agrees to be mentored by Michael Angarano's character Dustin. Along the way, George strikes up an unlikely friendship with popular girl Sally, played byEmma Roberts.

If our EXCLUSIVE trailer is any indication, the dynamic among these three characters is not nearly as simple as the film's synopsis would lead us to believe. It's obvious George likes Sally. We're pretty sure Sally likes George. George doesn't make a move. So Dustin does. On Sally. Sally seems into it. George is nonplussed. In short, what we have here is a messy love triangle (our favorite kind!). Though we have no idea how this film ends, that final smoldering stare and slight smooch-friendly lean-in bodes well for Sally and George. (Sorry, Dustin.)

Sundance: 'Homework' Sells To Fox Searchlight

PARK CITY, UT January 23, 2011 – Fox Searchlight Pictures Presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley announced today that the company has acquired most worldwide rights to the film HOMEWORK.  Written and directed by Gavin Wiesen in his directorial debut, HOMEWORK stars Freddie Highmore, Emma Roberts, Michael Angarano, Elizabeth Reaser, Rita Wilson, Sam Robards and Blair Underwood.  The film was produced by P. Jennifer Dana, Kara Baker, Gia Walsh and Darren Goldberg.  The film is scheduled to be released in 2011.

“Homework is a real coming of age story, it touched us with its genuine performances, depth and wit,” said Utley.  “We're thrilled to continue Searchlight's tradition of being a home to first time filmmakers.”

“We couldn't have found a better home than Searchlight, a company renowned for championing new storytellers,” says Wiesen.

“We are delighted to have found an impassioned partner for Homework.  Searchlight shares our passion for this gem of a film.  We couldn't be in better hands,” say Dana, Baker, Walsh and Goldberg.

HOMEWORK stars Freddie Highmore as George, a lonely and fatalistic teen who's made it all the way to his senior year without ever having done a real day of work, who is befriended by Sally, a beautiful and complicated girl who recognizes in him a kindred spirit.

The deal was brokered by Fox Searchlight’s Vice President of Acquisitions Ray Strache, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Acquisitions Tony Safford, Senior Vice President of Business Affairs Megan O’Brien and International Creative Management, which represented North American rights.  ICM also represents Wiesen and Underwood.  Goldcrest Films is handling International sales.

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Six

Summary: Set in the early 1960's, a white college graduate uncomfortable with the current social norms of Mississippi at the time plans a book detailing the life of the various black maids in the area. Her research soon uncovers not just racism but cruelty and criminal action by white society women, some of them even her friends.

Analysis: It took five years of writing and rejects from nearly fifty literary agents, but Kathryn Stockett's debut novel in 2009 was a critical and commercial hit, spending at least a full year on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list. When Dreamworks announced that production was to get underway on a film adaptation, a lot of people were very interested in who would be cast and how the adaptation would be done.

The results haven't pleased everyone. Though stocked with a swath of impressive acting talent both younger (Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, David Oyelowo, Chris Lowell, Mike Vogel) and older (Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Octavia Spencer, Cicely Tyson, Dana Ivey, Leslie Jordan), there's been vocal criticism about the lack of genuine Southern actors in key roles.

There's also a question mark about actor turned filmmaker Tate Taylor. Not only is this only his second film as director after 2008's not well-received "Pretty Ugly People", but it's also a very high profile and demanding assignment which will be scrutinised to an extent most films don't come under. I wish him the best of luck because if this does work out, it'll put him quickly on the map of in-demand directors.

One bit of authenticity is the setting. The film was shot on location in Mississippi this past Summer, the most significant film production to hit the state since the Coens' "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" a decade ago. However the town of Greenwood was used to portray 1960s-era Jackson for much of the shoot with only some pickups and external filming in real-life Jackson.

Analysis: A cute little rom-com marking Gavin Wiesen's directorial debut, the film is set to have its world premiere at Sundance next month. Shot back in April this year in New York City, its inclusion at Park City surprised mainly because there's practically nothing known about it. Yet the festival's selectors obviously liked it enough to allow its inclusion. Certainly the cast is strong as it includes the above named actors along with Sam Robards, Blair Underwood and Rita Wilson.

Sundance Competition Films

PARK CITY, UT - Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films selected to screen in the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. In addition to the four Competition Categories, the Festival presents films in six out-of-competition sections to be announced on December 2. The 2011 Sundance Film Festival runs January 20-30 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

On Day One, the Festival will forego the convention of one opening night film and instead screen one narrative film and one documentary from both the U.S. and World Cinema competitions, as well as one shorts program.

John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival said, "The Festival is a challenge to narrowly define. It is all at once exciting, fun, crazy, engaging, visceral, and sometimes even painful. We can explain storylines, we can share what we know of each artist's unique journey, but ultimately what we will experience for 10 days in January is different for each of us. It's the spark from the filmmakers - their passion - that brings 200 unique worlds to life and, in turn, ignites the audience. The films, conversations, encounters are there to experience. And that's what makes Sundance so magical."

For the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, 115 feature-length films were selected, representing 28 countries by 40 first-time filmmakers, including 25 in competition. These films were selected from 3,812 feature-length film submissions composed of 1,943 U.S. and 1,869 international feature-length films. 92 films at the Festival will be world premieres.

Said Trevor Groth, Director of Programming, "Knowing how difficult it is to get a film made anywhere, and given that the number of submissions was higher than ever, it is a testament to the passion and creativity of filmmakers everywhere that they are able to preserve and stay true to their vision. The caliber of films submitted this year was exceptional and made for exhilarating discussion among the programmers. Now that discussion gets turned over to the audience."

Paramount Gets Custody Of 'Young Adult'

Paramount Pictures acquired world rights to Mandate Pictures' Young Adult, the pic that reteams Junoscribe Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman. Deadline brokethe story about the film and that they had landed Charlize Theron to play the lead role, a ghostwriter of young adult novels who dips into some adolescent behavior. Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt have also joined the cast, per the studio's announcement. The movie begins production in New York this month.

While the release mostly repeats material Deadline already covered, here's a new wrinkle I can report: Elizabeth Reaser, who plays Esme Cullen in the Twilight Saga films, has sunk her teeth into a significant role in Reitman's film. She plays the wife of the man (Wilson) that Theron's character is trying to steal away. Reaser is also starring in the indie Homework with Emma Roberts and Michael Angarano.
