'Hunger Games' Josh Hutcherson on Sequel's New Director: 'It's Gonna Be a Fun Ride' (Video)

The actor tells THR he's "excited" to meet Francis Lawrence, who will helm the next installment of the Lionsgate franchise.

Amid the high profile director shakeup for Lionsgate's sequel to The Hunger Games, the film's three stars -- Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth -- had remained mum on their new leader. Attending the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday, Hutcherson broke his silence.

"I'm excited to meet him," Hutcherson said of newly named Catching Fire director, Francis Lawrence. "I've heard amazing things about him, so it's gonna be a fun ride."

Hutcherson was on hand to receive the watchdog organization's Vanguard award, presented to media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community.

"It means the world to me," Hutcherson said of the honor. "Getting awards for acting is one thing, but getting awards for trying to actually make a difference in the community -- that means so much more to me."

The actor, 19, has lent his support to ally organization Straight But Not Narrow and has remained outspoken about equality. Hutcherson co-starred as the son of a lesbian couple in the 2010 pic The Kids Are All Right, which took home the GLAAD Award for outstanding feature, wide release.

"My fight for equal rights has been all my life," he said. "My whole family raised me very much with an open mind. Everybody deserves to be treated equally no matter race, gender, sexuality, whatever. It's a big thing that's important to me."

Francis Lawrence Is Lionsgate's Choice to Direct 'Hunger Games' Sequel 'Catching Fire' (Exclusive)

Sources say he will receive an official offer this afternoon.

After a quick but fairly exhaustive search, Lionsgate has chosen Francis Lawrence to direct the Hunger Games sequelCatching Fire.

Sources say Lawrence will receive an official offer Thursday afternoon. If he accepts and a deal can be worked out, he will replaceGary Ross, who directed the hugely successful first installment of the franchise.

The hunt has been fast and furious, with the field narrowing down to Lawrence, director of I Am Legend and Water for Elephants, and Bennett Miller, who helmed the Oscar-nominated Brad Pitt baseball movie Moneyball. Both directors met with the studio Thursday, according to sources, and Lionsgate executives have made their pick.

Lawrence was deemed the front-runner by observers simply because of his open schedule. Miller is working his way to a December start for Foxcatcher, a true-life project centering on John Du Pont that has been his focus for several years. Miller has even lined up Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo for the drama, and delaying it would have been a Herculean task.

Other directors on the shortlist of Catching Firecontenders were Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy), Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu (Babel), Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre) and Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code).

Lawrence’s selection raises the question of the state of the Catching Fire screenplay. Ross, who is a writer as much as he is a director, worked on the Hunger Games script and was planning on spending two months honing Fire, working from a script penned by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire). The producers and the new director now will need to keep working with Beaufoy or hire new scribes to hammer out the script before shooting begins.

The moviemakers are facing a ticking clock, especially since Lionsgate has set a Nov. 22, 2013, release date for Catching Fire, the second of four planned movies based on Suzanne Collins' trilogy of books. Also coming into play is that shooing for Fire likely needs to be done by early January so that star Jennifer Lawrence, who is not related to the Austria-born director, can begin shooting the sequel to X-Men: First Class in late January. Fox, which is making that movie, has an option on the actress that supersedes her Lionsgate commitment.

Lawrence is repped by CAA and 3Arts and attorney Gretchen Rush.

Robert Pattinson Has 'Strength,' Says 'Water For Elephants' Director

'I was a little skeptical, because I only knew him from 'Twilight,' ' Francis Lawrence admits to MTV News.

Robert Pattinson has certainly been branching out from "Twilight." His latest venture outside the world of vampires who sparkle in the sun is the vintage romantic drama "Water for Elephants." He plays Jacob, a 20-something who quits veterinarian school after his parents die in a car accident. He accidentally joins a circus and, from there, discovers more about life and falling in love with the boss' lady, played by Reese Witherspoon, than he could have imagined.

Director Francis Lawrence, who recently wrapped up work on Beyoncé's new music video, said Pattinson possessed the qualities necessary for the part.
"I was a little skeptical, because I only knew him from 'Twilight,' and 'Twilight' was a very stylized movie and it was really hard to tell what he was capable of," he told MTV News at the flick's NYC premiere on Sunday. "But when I sat down with him, I judged him just based on who he is, and I thought, 'Wow, I could really use this guy, because this guy kind of is Jacob from the book.' He still has an innocence and there still is a purity to him. He's humble, even with all of this success. He's a man, but he's still a little uncomfortable in his own skin. He has strength, and you know he had all the things of this guy, and I thought, 'If I can just use who he is, we're set.' "
It wasn't just Lawrence who was excited about having Pattinson in the flick, but also Twilighters, who showed up on set hoping to catch a glimpse of the star.
"They were there every day, but I have to say, they were really respectful," he recalled. "They kept their distance; they stayed outside of the gate. ... We went to Tennessee, and we came to our first set, which was in the middle of nowhere. It was like pulling up to Woodstock. There was cars parked for miles for all of the Rob fans that were waiting. They had camped out at night [in] all of the ditches in the side of the road. We thought we were in the middle of nowhere and nobody knew where we were."

Q&A with WFE Director Francis Lawrence

Robert Pattinson trades the media circus that surrounds the Twilight series for an actual circus, as the actor joins Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz in an adaptation of Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants. Director Francis Lawrence recently spoke to AMC's Film Critic about Pattinson's animal magnetism, the changes he made to the source material, and the reasons no one runs away to join the circus anymore.
Q: For the people who only know Robert Pattinson from the Twilight saga, tell me what he brings to the table as an actor.
A: The Twilight films don't really show the full range of what I believe he is capable of. They are very stylized, and he's kind of hidden behind this pale makeup and contacts. I think people are going to be surprised when they see him in this movie -- how much more naturalistic he can be and how nuanced his performance is. I just think he is a very natural performer, and I think he has a real magnetism, which is very important for a star. It's interesting. I cast him because I found him to be a lot like Jacob. There is a purity, a strength, and a humility to him, and I think all of those qualities come across very nicely.
