97 Original Scores in 2011 Oscar® Race

Beverly Hills, CA (December 22, 2011) – Ninety-seven scores from eligible feature-length motion pictures are in contention for nominations in the Original Score category for the 84th Academy Awards®, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today.

The eligible scores along with the composer are listed below in alphabetical order by film title:

A Reminder List of works submitted in the Original Score category shall be sent with a nominations ballot to all members of the Music Branch who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.

To be eligible, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.

The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar® presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

Announcing the 2012 Golden Globe Nominations

Well, folks, we're finally getting into the heavy hitters of award season, as the 2012 Golden Globe nominees were announced this morning. As expected, award season darlings The Artist and The Descendants led the way with five nods apiece, but there are plenty of surprises here, too. George Clooney is going to have a big night, as his The Ides of Marchscored four nods, including one for him as a director. Ryan Gosling managed to score two nods for acting, for Crazy, Stupid, Love as well as Ides.

In the TV categories, new shows ruled as nods for New Girl, Game of Thrones, Boss,Episodes, Enlightened, and Homeland made the list — and that's not all. Zooey Deschanelscored a best actress nod, as did Mireille Enos for her work on The Killing and Laura Dern forEnlightened.

We'll be breaking down all of the surprises and snubs later today, but for now, check out the full list of nominees when you read more.

Reitman Will Be Joined By The Film’s Stars Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt and Screenwriter Diablo Cody

Palm Springs, CA (December 13, 2011) – The 23rd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) will present the film Young Adult with the Vanguard Award recognizing its outstanding creative ensemble.  Cast members from the film including Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt, director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody will attend to accept the award.  Presented by Cartier, the Awards Gala will be held Saturday, January 7, at the Palm Springs Convention Center.  Hosted by Mary Hart, the Awards Gala will also present awards to previously announced honorees George Clooney, Glenn Close, Michel Hazanavicius, Octavia Spencer and Michelle Williams.  The Festival runs January 5-16.

This is the second Vanguard Award for Cody and Reitman, who first received the honor in 2008 for Juno. Reitman recently garnered the 2010 PSIFF Best Director Award for Up in the Air, and Theron previously earned the 2006 Desert Palm Achievement Actress Award for North Country.

Mavis Gary is a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart. When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either. The film stars Charlize Theron, Patton Oswalt, Patrick Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser and Jill Eikenberry.

Young Adult Authors Shouldn’t Take Young Adult Personally, Says Diablo Cody

When the first images from Young Adult surfaced on the Web earlier this year, showingCharlize Theron looking bedraggled in her sweats and Mickey Mouse shirt, clutching a Pomeranian in a carrier and a Victoria’s Secret bag, several young adult authors I know took to Twitter immediately. They seemed torn between being excited about the existence of a movie about their profession, especially one written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, and slightly horrified by the idea of being depicted as ladies who can’t be bothered to brush their hair and put on a decent pair of pants before leaving the house. And then when they learned Charlize’s character, Mavis Gary, is kind of a crazy stalker who can’t let go of her high school years, they were a bit worried.

“I watched [the trailer], and I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to give my profession a bad name!”Mortal Instruments series author Cassandra Clare told TheFABlife last week. At the same time, she added, “I really want to see it, because when will there be another movie about a young adult author?”

But Cody, who calls herself “the Sweet Valley superfan of all time” and is writing an upcomingadaptation of Sweet Valley High, is pretty sure there won’t be a huge outcry from the YA author community. “Mavis is one of a kind. I don’t think it’s an indictment of young adult authors as a group. It’s just this one lady is a little bit off-kilter,” she assured us at the movie’s New York premiere. And though she previously only knew Sweet Valley creatorFrancine Pascal, “since this movie has been screening, I have met some [YA authors] that have come out of the woodwork, and they are all into the movie, so I’m glad.”

We asked Twilight matriarch Elizabeth Reaser, who co-stars in Young Adult as the wife of Mavis’ ex-boyfriend, what she thought minor YA author Stephenie Meyer would think of this movie. “I think she would appreciate it as a movie,” she said. “I don’t think she could relate to this character! She’s so not this woman, obviously. Stephenie Meyer is like the dream mom and wonderful lady, so she couldn’t be further from Mavis!”

But clearly, we aren’t the only ones wondering how the movie will affect some of our favorite authors. Huffington Post asked Maureen Johnson (The Last Little Blue Envelope, The Name of the Star) to review the movie. And while she genuinely seemed to enjoy how f—ed up Mavis really is, she’s kind of bracing herself for comparisons to her.

“In this film, the point seemed to be that Mavis writes young adult because she is emotionally stunted and trapped in her memories of high school. I would say that while Mavis is certainly stuck in high school, her problems are much more profound than that,” Johnson writes in HuffPo. “I’m just saying… this film should not be taken to demonstrate what YA writers are like. And I’m saying this because just this morning, three people asked me jokingly, ‘Hey, is that writer in Young Adult based on you? Har har har!’ This is going to be a thing. I can feel it.”
