Keeping up with Julia Jones

Actress Julia Jones, who grew up in Jamaica Plain, was back in Boston yesterday to promote the release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1’’ DVD, which technically comes out at midnight.

The Boston Latin grad (above), who has been in the “Twilight’’ world ever since she was cast as the only female werewolf in the franchise, told us yesterday during an interview at the Liberty Hotel that the vampire movies are still a huge part of her life, even though she finished filming both parts of “Breaking Dawn’’ last April. After this DVD release, she and the rest of the cast (including Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson) will begin to hype “Breaking Dawn - Part 2,’’ which comes out this fall. And after all these years, the fans are no less interested in her sad character, the brooding Leah Clearwater.

“Leah fans are kind of emotional,’’ Jones said, wistfully. “I’ve definitely been hugged by crying girls.’’

Of course, Jones has made some time for other projects since “Breaking Dawn’’ wrapped. She made two indie movies - “Winter in the Blood,’’ in which she costars with fellow “Twilight’’ werewolf Chase Spencer, and a comedy called “Missed Connections,’’ which features Sting’s daughter, Mickey Sumner. Jones also just filmed an episode of the TV show “In Plain Sight,’’ in which she’ll play a cop. She said that as much as she loved the experience - and her work on “ER’’ years ago - her hope is to stick to films. And another goal? “I’ve got to catch my breath,’’ she said, with a laugh. Jones had plans to relax at last night’s Lakers-Celtics game.

Twilight's Julia Jones: A Wolf in Chic Clothing

The Jamaica Plain native has had plenty of time to soak up masculine style while shooting Eclipse and the hotly anticipated The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, the first part of which releases November 18. She plays Leah Clearwater, the lone female in the Quileute’s wolf pack. “I have spent so much time with boys during the filming!” she says. “During Eclipse, I hardly ever saw the vampire cast, where there are more women. Breaking Dawnwas a slightly different experience for me, though. Jacob, Leah and her brother spend a lot more time with the vampires, so I’ve gotten to know that part of the cast much better.”

The collaboration inherent in acting is one of the things Jones loves about the profession. Like her days on her high school ski team, she says, it’s about the individual’s performance enhancing the whole team. “It pushes your game to be around great acting,” she says. “I always want to be in the level above me.”

That’s no surprise, coming from a graduate of the competitive Boston Latin School, where “your academic rank drove everything,” Jones says. And she still remembers her own: 33 out of 450. In a school with an incredibly diverse student body, Jones felt at home. “It was an open-minded community,” she says, as was JP: “One of the great things about growing up there was that it’s so ethnically diverse, you didn’t really pay attention to race. My dad is part Choctaw, Chickosaw and African American. I didn’t realize the significance of not being white until I moved to LA.”

From Boston Latin, Jones went to Columbia University. With one semester to go, however, “I took the biggest left turn of my life,” she says, moving to LA to start her acting career. Though she did eventually graduate, her career has been on a hot streak since she filmed The Twilight Saga movies. This year, Jones also wrapped Winter in the Blood, and this fall she’ll start work on the indie film Missed Connections.

Although she has always been a reader, Jones says it’s not always smart for her to read the book a movie is based on before reading the script. “You end up adding too much from the book into the character,” she says. But withThe Twilight Saga that wasn’t the case. “The books are so important to the whole Twilight imagination,” she says. “I couldn’t stop reading them. They totally sweep you away.”

If being a reader helped Jones absorb her role as Leah, being trained as a dancer at the Boston Ballet School from age 4 until her sophomore year of high school helped her adopt the physical nature of a wolf. “When I approach a role, physicality is a huge thing for me,” she says. “How would this character move, sit, stand? ”

On set with the boys in the wolf pack, Jones has seen the value of her training. “In Twilight, half of the wolf pack has martial arts training,” she says. “There’s a focus and discipline there that helps with acting.” Her ballet training also helped her hold poses when modeling for the Gap and L’Oréal—and shooting on the balcony of the Deluxe Ebersol Suite at The Liberty or on the cobble byways of Beacon Hill (in four-inch heels) for Boston Common, of course.

Q&A: 'Breaking Dawn' Star Julia Jones Hangs With the Boys

Let's just get this out of the way:  Julia Jones is gorgeous.  If you know her from "The Twilight Saga" -- and you probably do -- you've seen her running through the woods in zero makeup and the kind of low-glam outfit one doesn't mind ripping to shreds.

The actress and model joined "The Twilight Saga" in "Eclipse" as Leah Clearwater, the first and only female werewolf in the history of the Quileute tribe, and the look doesn't do her justice. But we can attest: in person (and without jean shorts), she is stunning.

Jones tells NextMovie exclusively what it's like to infiltrate the boys' club, what "The Twilight Saga" means for girls and, of course, who has the best abs in her pack.

What's it like to be the only girl in -- literally -- a boys' club?
It's mostly fun and it's a little bit sometimes like… you want to puke. I felt so privy to their conversations, they literally stopped censoring themselves around me. At a certain point... they said, 'We're just not going to try to clean this up at all for you.'

I kind of got to a place where I felt like I... know how to think like a guy. I may have blocked most of it, but it is intricate and complicated and it's a whole thing that goes on with boys, especially at bars.
Did that work to your advantage while you developed the Leah character? It seems like she's become deliberately unfeminine to keep up with her pack.
I actually thought to myself, 'Wow, it's really strange how much I really want them to not censor themselves around me.' Like I really want them to be cool with me in every situation. It's such a unique, concentrated environment when you're with a group of people all the time. That kind of heightens your need to be accepted all the time, but that's exactly what Leah's going through.
Has knowing how gross guys can be impacted your dating life?
It's been a serious struggle for the last few months!
That said, you spent an enormous amount of time with a bunch of shirtless men, so it's not all bad. Whose abs were the most impressive?
It's kind of a tossup between Taylor [Lautner] and Alex Meraz. They are both just in, like, pristine shape. And actually Booboo's in really great shape also.
What was your "Twilight" growing up? What did you geek out over?
I'm, like, a real nerd, in that I will take a book that is three inches thick and disappear and not leave until it's done. That would be my extracurricular activity.
When I was growing up, I was really into "Rent" and I actually slept on the street in New York all night to get to sit in the first few rows for it. So I guess I was more into that than anything else.
Do you want to do a musical theater or you just watch musical theater?
I can't really sing, really.
Historically speaking, the big "event" movies have mostly skewed male -- "Star Wars," "Lord of the Rings." "Harry Potter" is pretty gender-neutral, but "The Twilight Saga" is more or less the first midnight-showing-level phenomenon primarily for the ladies. Amazing?
Totally. I think it's a testament to Stephenie Meyer -- she's the reason the movies have been so successful and that we're at this place with ... a lot of really strong female roles. This franchise is really far from any other huge releases, and it says massive things about what [girls] are relating to and what they need. They need role models like Bella. And even Alice  and Rosalie and Leah, who are opinionated, strong people. All these characters come from very different places. They are strong people, all of them.
Leah changes a lot throughout the series -- mostly in the final book (and these last two movies). Did you enjoy her growth?
It was a relief to play, actually. "Eclipse" was just so strenuous emotionally, because she was so angry all the time. ["Breaking Dawn"] was really fun -- I was very ready to let her move past her anger. She doesn't, like, get happy. I don't know that she smiles at all even in "Breaking Dawn".
She just starts to deal with her stuff.

Fansite Interview with Julia Jones

Several fansites had the chance to talk with Booboo Stewart and Julia Jones in a phone interview a while back.  A few hours ago we posted our interview with Booboo.  Here is the interview we did with Julia.  Again, we’d like to thank Summit for the opportunity and Julia and Booboo for speaking with us!

Fansites: Leah generally is perceived as such an angry character by fans, but I think we can all agree that there’s also a level of sadness to her. And so I was just curious as to how you played the difference between the anger and the sadness that she might feel to give her a little bit more depth.

Julia: That’s a good question. It’s very Breaking Dawn appropriate. I think one of the big differences that you see in Leah from Eclipse to Breaking Dawn is that she’s able to shed a lot of her anger and express her sadness which is sort of like a step in the direction towards healing. Jacob really feels like he’s given her an opportunity to do that by letting her stay and be in his pack. And it sort of through that and through their relationship that Leah is able to shed some of the anger and get the weight of the things that were making her sad off of her chest.

Fansites: Now that we’ve seen small clips of Breaking Dawn and one scene between you and Jacob, what did you tap into in order to develop Leah? Because she seems to be much better developed in this movie than previously. And is there any life experience that you brought to the role, or do you feel that you were able to express Leah better in this movie than maybe you have in the past?

Julia: Definitely. Well, I don’t know if it’s a question of being able to express her better in this movie than in Eclipse, it’s just that she’s expressing such different sides of herself and she’s expressing a lot more of herself. So in that way I suppose it was an opportunity to express her better. But I think that a lot of her pain – I think that anger is sort of a cover for pain and a lot of times people who are really angry are feeling sad and hurt underneath it. And rather than express sadness and hurt, it kind of comes out in anger and sort of layers of that. And so I think that she just in this really needed to – she really needed Jacob in a way that was interesting for me as an actor, because I don’t have a relationship that like theirs. I don’t – it was hard to relate to, and fortunately, because you get to play these characters for so long, you get to a point where you really are just stepping into them where I look at Taylor and I don’t see Taylor. I see Jacob, and I see this person where, as Leah, she really needs him to accept her and to let her stay and to understand her. And so I really relied a lot on the script and on the material and on the book to imagine what it would be like for her. Because it’s such an unusual – it’s an inhuman experience to have.

Fansites: You said in a previous interview that all your scenes in this movie are with Taylor Lautner. How is that different from filming with the entire wolf pack in previous movies?

Julia: (Laughing) COMPLETELY different in every way! It’s really like opposite ends of the spectrum, because the wolf pack scenes are so – there are so many boys and there’s so much energy and it’s so loud and it’s so chaotic and it’s sort of fun and crazy. And the scenes with just Taylor and Booboo are quiet like sort of intimate, serious scenes for the most part. And there’s this sort of sense of weightiness and a heaviness in the scenes with Jacob and Seth because there’s all this real drama and tension. It’s like life or death. It’s very serious in Breaking Dawn in the scenes with those guys. Verses with the wolf pack a lot of it’s just fun and playing sports games and joking around. But then it gets very serious, of course, when we actually leave. A lot of drama.

Fansites: I was curious about your take on the Jacob/Leah/Renesmee triangle. It’s been hinted at by Stephenie Meyer and others and I was wondering if you portrayed the character in Breaking Dawn with that awareness or you tried to ignore it?

Julia: Yeah, totally. That doesn’t really come up quite yet. It’s just sort of beginning in the first part of Breaking Dawn. But I was very aware of and it was very complex actually, Leah’s feelings and reactions to having this child around and what it meant about her relationship with Jacob. And also I think a really big subtext thing is her questioning what’s going to happen to her in her life. Is she going to be able to have children? And I think that Renesmee sort of triggers a lot of those questions for her. And also she’s still close to Jacob and that somebody that he still cares for – and this is true of the wolf pack in general, but I think particularly in Breaking Dawn as it pertains to Leah and Jacob. They’re just so close that Renesmee is very close to her and means a lot to her in between the lines.

Fansites: Given the dynamic change in Breaking Dawn with you and the rest of wolf pack, has that changed how you bonded with the wolf pack over the course of the different films?

Leah: I don’t think so. I am still as close or closest to- you know, Chaske Spencer and Alex Meraz are two of my closest friends. And we have stayed in close touch even when we weren’t filming and throughout filming. The way that we filmed it, a lot of the wolf pack stuff in Breaking Dawn was filmed earlier in shooting, and then later on it was sort of more Jacob, Leah, and Seth stuff. So it didn’t really affect the dynamics of the wolf pack in the beginning because they really just weren’t really around for parts of it. My overall experience filming Breaking Dawn was incredibly different because they weren’t around for a lot of it, but I don’t think it affected our dynamic at all.

Fansites: Prior to getting the script, was there a particular scene or an interaction that you definitely wanted to make it to the film, and I don’t know if you can tell us or not if it actually made it into the film.

Julia: I was really excited to see the scene where Leah screams at Bella for hurting Jacob. I think I was excited about that because I spent all of Eclipse being so angry at Bella and so to actually get to scream at her was going to be like really fun and exciting. And I’m not going to answer about whether it’s in there or not!

Fansites: Stephenie Meyer once said that if she was to make another chapter of the Twilight saga in the perspective of another character it would be Leah’s. Did you get to speak with her about Leah and get any new information that we never read in the books?

Julia: Not so much actually. One of the kind of wonderful things about getting to work on a movie or franchise that’s based on a book is, of course, that there’s so much material to sort of draw from that’s not in the script. And then additionally, with Twilight we had Stephenie on set pretty much every day. There’s so many characters that we all kind of do our work and come to work with an idea of what’s going on and the whole inner life of the character. And then if you need any help or if you have any questions, not only do you have a director and producers and other actors around there, but you also have Stephenie Meyer who wrote the books. I know that that was really helpful for a lot of people, and I have maybe one or two really brief exchanges with her about Leah that have been positive and given me confidence. But I haven’t talked to her at all about anything going forward.
