Monday, November 7, 2011-- Independent feature film GIRLFRIEND, written and directed by Justin Lerner, has been nominated for “The Gotham Independent Film Audience Award” this year powered by Festival Genius along with BUCK, BEING ELMO: A PUPPETEER'S JOURNEY, THE FIRST GRADER, and WILD HORSE, WILD RIDE.

GIRLFRIEND follows Evan Gray (Evan Sneider), a young man with Down syndrome, who lives with his mother (Amanda Plummer) in a working-class town hit hard by the recent economic recession. Evan is hopelessly in love with his high school crush, Candy (Shannon Woodward), now a single mom who is facing insurmountable debt, possible eviction, and a relentless volatile, ex-boyfriend named Russ (Jackson Rathbone). When Evan unexpectedly inherits a large sum of money, he finds the best use possible… to pursue Candy and help her out of her crisis. In no position to turn down any offer of financial support, Candy hesitantly accepts Evan’s gift, but sadly, is unable to return his love. Thus begins an emotionally intense entanglement as Russ, Candy and Evan become intertwined in a complex triangle of secrets, jealousy, and revenge.

Jackson's 'Girlfriend' to be featured at Woods Hole Film Festival

WOODS HOLE, MA— From Saturday, July 30, through Saturday, August 6, the Woods Hole Film Festival observes its 20th anniversary with a celebration befitting the oldest film festival on Cape Cod and the islands. Dedicated to showcasing and promoting the work of independent, emerging filmmakers, particularly in New England, it will screen nearly 20 narrative features and feature documentaries, many of which are world and US premieres, and 60 short films (narrative, documentary, animation and experimental) in competition, as well as hold a number of special screenings, parties, panel discussions, and workshops by this year’s Filmmaker-in-Residence—all at the water’s edge in the quaint village of Woods Hole.


Many of this year’s films have a Massachusetts connection, including two films that are US premieres: Girlfriend, a narrative feature by Justin Lerner shot in Wayland, MA, and Jimmy Tingle’s American Dream by the Cambridge-based comedian. Girlfriend stars Jackson Rathbone (Twilight), Shannon Woodward, Amanda Plummer, and newcomer Evan Sneider as a young man with Down Syndrome who lives with his mother in a poor, working-class town hit hard by the recession. When Evan unexpectedly comes into a large amount of money, he decides to use it by pursuing a girl from town who he has been in love with since high school. Jimmy Tingle’s American Dream features comedy, commentary and conversation with some of America’s most iconic personalities and social critics, such as Howard Zinn, Robert Altman, Mort Sahl, Janeane Garafalo, Sean Hannity, Lewis Black, Margery Eagan, Jim Braude, Bobcat Goldthwaite, Sister Lena Divey, Al Franken, Robert Reich, Colin Quinn, and Barry Crimmins, as well as family, friends and total strangers and more. This is a gala type screening, which includes;

There's no doubt in my mind that this year's overall crop of films was better than in 2009. But I've managed to narrow down the list to 16 as I did last year. I've also selected two documentaries and 15 Honorable Mentions.

However she longs to be a source of attention by receiving affection of single mother Candy. Girlfriend gets distribution

EXCLUSIVE: Hannover House Buys TIFF Buzz Film 'Girlfriend'

EXCLUSIVE: In a deal set in motion after the film’s well-received screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival, Hannover House has acquired the North American rights to “Girlfriend,” an indie drama written and directed by Justin Lerner.

The film stars Evan Sneider (left), an actor with Down syndrome who plays a young man who comes into money and uses it to romance the girl he’s had a crush on since high school. Sneider’s co-stars include Shannon Woodward (“Raising Hope”), Jackson Rathbone (“The Twilight Saga”) and Amanda Plummer.

Hannover House plans to release “Girlfriend” before the end of the year.

Interest in the film picked up after its screenings in the Discovery section of the Toronto festival, particularly two sold-out public screenings that were followed by enthusiastic Q&A sessions involving Lerner, Sneider and other cast members.

The deal is believed to be in the mid-to-upper six figures.

“I was already very grateful to come away from my first TIFF with the amazing reaction we got from audiences there,” Lerner said in a statement. “To have a distribution deal is icing on the cake.”

Added Hannover House president Fred Shefte, “We see in ‘Girlfriend’ a groundbreaking story told with skill and sensitivity. This is also a movie that comes with layers of identifiable audiences, one of which has, until now, never properly been represented on the big screen.”

“Girlfriend,” Lerner’s feature debut, was produced by the Beverly Hills-based Wayne/Lauren Film Company in association with PatchMo Entertainment.  “We look forward to sharing more adventures as ‘Girlfriend,’ now in the hands of a distributor who sees the same potential we do, continues to build and move audiences,” said Wayne/Lauren founders Jerad Anderson and Kristina Anderson.

According to Hannover, “Girlfriend” marks the first time that an actor with Down syndrome has been cast as a leading man in an American film.

Hannover House’s previous films as a distributor include the Joel Schumacher film “Twelve” and the controversial Dakota Fanning film “Hounddog.”

The deal came on the first anniversary of the film’s start of production. It was negotiated by Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group and D. Frederick Shefte of Hannover House. Attorney Erin McPherson represented the filmmakers.

The World Premiere of Girlfriend took place this past week at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. Featured in the Discovery section, the screenings were held in the Scotiabank Theatre at Richmond and John St. 

This is the first full-length feature from writer/director Justin Lerner. I first met Lerner and reviewed his short film The Replacement Child at the 2008 Santa Barbara Film Festival and had been eagerly awaiting this debut. It far exceeded my expectations. 


Girlfriend stars Evan Sneider (The Replacement Child), Shannon Woodward (The Haunting of Molly Hartley), Jackson Rathbone (The Twilight Saga), and Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction). It's hard to watch at times but is one of those films that deserves the label "important." This movie about (and starring) a young man with Down's Syndrome has some scenes which may make audiences uncomfortable but, to me, that's one of the definitions of true art -- it moves you, makes you happy, sad, angry -- it affects you emotionally on a deeply personal level. 

Writer/director/producer Justin Lerner was joined onstage by Evan Sneider (Evan), Jackson Rathbone (Russ, co-producer, composer), Jerad Anderson (Kenny, producer, composer), Shannon Woodward (Candy), and Quyen Tran (cinematographer) for a Q&A following the Monday, September 13 screening. The celebration continued well into Tuesday morning as I headed to Brant House for a spectacular afterparty with the cast and crew, including the members of the band 100 Monkeys -- Rathbone, Anderson, M. Lawrence Abrams, Ben Johnson, and Ben Graupner -- who wrote the original music featured in the film. The group played a public concert at the club following the party.
