Robert Pattinson Says Making 'Water For Elephants' Was 'Magical'
'I just wanted to show I can be Jacob too,' he jokes to MTV News about his character's 'Twilight'-ready name.
"MTV First: Robert Pattinson" was barely seconds old before the man of the hour started to feel just a little bit overwhelmed. After we told him that his fans had tweeted in 50,000 questions, he cracked, "Do I have to answer every single one?"
Considering that would probably require Pattinson to hang around with us until the first part of "Breaking Dawn" hits theaters in November, we'll let the guy off the hook. But before we even hit the first of our Twitter questions, we revealed an exclusive "Water for Elephants" clip and asked Rob about shooting the upcoming drama opposite Reese Witherspoon.
"It felt like it was kind of magical in many ways, because we were out in the desert shooting," he said. "There was nothing from the modern world around. It was a different experience for me. It wasn't in a studio or anything."
Sure, it was different, but there remains something oddly familiar about "Water for Elephants": a sweeping romantic story, a love triangle and a character named Jacob. Sound a bit like "Twilight," anyone? The twist, though, is that this time Pattinson is the one playing Jacob.
"I just wanted to show I can be Jacob too. That's the only reason I did the movie. I just looked at the name. There was an elephant, my name is Jacob — done," he said, adding with a laugh, "The next movie I'm doing, I'm called Taylor in it."
The movie is definitely a major step in his career, as he leaps from a blockbuster vampire franchise to a major studio project co-starring Oscar winners Witherspoon and Cristoph Waltz. Only after production wrapped and he began to make the press rounds, though, did he begin to get a bit anxious.
"I wasn't nervous at all until I started doing interviews for it and I realized I actually did a movie," he told us. "It was just really fun while I was doing it. And now I remembered I actually made a movie. I think it's going to be great. It's really beautiful. It was really fun making it, so hopefully it will reflect in the movie."

Robert Pattinson On His Leading Ladies: 'I Like Hot Girls'
Actor gushes about Reese Witherspoon, Kristen Stewart and Uma Thurman, calling them 'experienced and passionate people.'
Given his otherworldly popularity, it seems as if any time Robert Pattinson appears in a film, the majority of the media attention and coverage focuses mainly on the man himself, not his various (and equally attractive) co-stars. As such, Pattinson's lovely leading ladies are occasionally overlooked and likely find themselves constantly answering questions about the "Twilight" star and not the other way around.
However, during our live interview with Pattinson on Friday (March 18), "MTV News First: Robert Pattinson," we asked the actor to talk about his beautiful co-stars, beginning with Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon, who plays his love interest in the upcoming romance "Water for Elephants."
When asked whether he was intimidated by Witherspoon, given her award-winning career, Pattinson admitted that he was — but only for a few minutes.
"Anyone who's really famous and really great, it's always going to be slightly intimidating," he said. "But she has such a nice energy about her, and [the intimidation] is gone within the first couple of seconds."
Regarding his track record of lovely co-stars (Witherspoon, Kristen Stewart, Emile de Ravin in "Remember Me" and Uma Thurman in the upcoming film "Bel Ami"), Pattinson joked that he only works with lovely ladies.
"I like hot girls," he joked. "I like them. I like being in movies with lots of hot girls," he said with a laugh, before getting serious to consider his current and former co-stars. "They're all pretty different," he said. "They're all very strong, actually. I always end up being in movies with very experienced and passionate people. They're never just flimsy floozies."

On 'MTV First: Robert Pattinson,' he opens up about 'Twilight' co-star.
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart clearly have a connection: From their onscreen chemistry in the "Twilight" saga to their real-life romance, the two stars undoubtedly see eye-to-eye on a lot of things. That is, however, except for how they approach their careers as performers.
During his live 30-minute chat with us for "MTV First: Robert Pattinson," the actor discussed the differences between his outlook on the acting process compared to KStew's.
"We just have different ways of thinking," Pattinson explained. "I like the kind of cerebral aspect of things, and she has kind of an immediate emotional response to stuff every single time."
In fact, their approach to things in real life often reflects their decision-making as actors. "She can be thrown by something someone says and notices much more about people, whereas I just want to see the meaning of something," the 24-year-old star of "Water for Elephants" explained.
So, how does RPattz's more-mental approach to acting bode with KStew's responsiveness? Not too well, actually. While Pattinson admitted he's someone who can't take on a project until he entirely gets it, Stewart will be the first to point out what there is to "get" is actually right there in front of him.
"She's like, 'Why can't you understand? It's obvious. You don't know, you shouldn't be an actor!' " RPattz described with a laugh.
But, then again, his approach to his acting career is very much rooted in instinct. "I don't want to just act for the sake of acting," he told us. "If I'm not doing kind-of cool stuff, then I don't want to be in front of people."
The star, who confessed he doesn't even like having his picture taken, added, "All I want to do is make movies that I want to see. I've always tried to go for that and ... you've got to go through lots of different hurdles to go to that level."
While he will continue to look for projects that challenge and interest him, he fully admitted he's not the type of actor who has a deep-rooted passion for the craft.
"I don't know what that feeling is," he said of the desire to act. "It's like, 'What do you want to do?' 'I want to read someone else's lines right now! I want someone to film me saying something!' Robert Pattinson Reflects On His Hair Evolution
From 'The Wavy Forest' to 'The Cullen Pouf,' RPattz discusses 'dos on 'MTV First: Robert Pattinson.'
In his upcoming film, the 1930s period drama "Water for Elephants," based on Sara Gruen's best-selling novel of the same name, Robert Pattinson begins to show new depth and range as an actor. Plus, his hair looks really, really different.
Much like his career, RPattz's hair is evolving. So, when MTV News sat down with the star for "MTV First: Robert Pattinson," it seemed like the perfect time to reflect on the diverse coifs that have sent his follicle-obsessed fans into a frenzy.
From his "Twilight"-appropriate 'dos such as "The Wavy Forest" and "The Cullen Pouf" to the self-explanatory "Windswept 'What the F---' " to the more subdued and serious looks like "Controlled Chaos" and "Clean & Cut but Hold the Shave," Pattinson took a trip down memory lane of the many haircuts he's rocked."I always like ... the 'Forest' thing," he said. Turns out, that particular hair style carried him through what he describes as the "unemployable" phase of his career. While attending the Los Angeles premiere of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" in 2007, Pattinson admitted to looking rather, well, unkempt.
"I walked down Hollywood Boulevard to Grauman's [Chinese Theater] and had to walk through the crowd and stuff," recalled the 24-year-old star who was not yet famous, adding, "I was so hungover and so bloated, and some of the pictures are just so funny. It literally looks like someone just found a homeless person and just put them on [the red carpet]. ... It was so ridiculous."
So, what is it that helps the star maintain that tousled, albeit sometimes homeless-looking hair? Courtesy of his "Twilight" co-star Ashley Greene, we asked RPattz what brand of shampoo he uses: "I use dog shampoo," he joked. In reality, he, like so many other sexy slacker types before him, simply uses, "Whatever is around."
But, the question remained: Would Pattinson ever rock the oh-so-sought-after Justin Bieber 'do? Despite rumors that he and his fellow heartthrob had discussed their hair together ("I never met this guy!" Pattinson told MTV), the actor was somewhat willing to take on the side-swept style. After laughing about the idea of sporting "The Bieber," RPattz quipped that instead he'd wear "a Bieber hat."

RPattz Talks 'Water For Elephants' And Everything Else On 'MTV First'
Well, that went extremely well, didn't it?
Robert Pattinson is now officially a guy we want to hang out with. He comes across as a funny (you could so do "Saturday Night Live," Rob), personable and down-to-earth fella who probably likes eating pizza, watching Netflix and hanging out with his dog, Bear (shortened from "Yogi Bear," as he was called in the shelter).
RPattz sat down with MTV.com's Josh Horowitz for over a half an hour to discuss his new film, "Water For Elephants," and pretty much everything else that might be of even the slightest interest on "MTV First: Robert Pattinson," which streamed the night of March 18.
Rob first introduced an exclusive clip from the period romance, "Water For Elephants," which featured Pattinson trying to convince a platinum blonde Reese Witherspoon to jump off a moving train with him. Swoon!
Rob then answered questions from both MTV.com and a live Twitter feed and revealed quite a few interesting tidbits about... well, a lot of stuff. As there was no real coherency to the discussion (as is true with the best hanging-out sessions), here are some random highlights from the mind (and mouth) of RPattz:
-- An elephant fart is not unlike a "hurricane," and no one knows this better than Reese Witherspoon.
-- He knows the following phrases in Polish: "Kneel," "Open your mouth," "Smile" and "Pray." These are elephant commands, though taken out of context could make things very interesting on a trip to Poland.
-- He describes the upcoming love scene in "Breaking Dawn" as "pretty funny," though he reveals that director Bill Condon has definitely made the film "like a horror movie."
-- He admits he was "hungover and bloated" at the Los Angeles premiere of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
-- The female lead in David Cronenberg's "Cosmopolis" has apparently been cast, but he's not allowed to say who it is. Juliette Binoche and Samantha Morton have also joined the cast.
-- There's no truth to the recent rumors that he's being courted for the "Daredevil" sequel/reboot, though he suggests that his "Eclipse" director David Slade should play "the bald guy" (meaning Bullseye).
-- He recently learned to play the cello.
-- He's never seen an episode of "Glee," despite many of his friends telling him that he must.
Rob also told a brief story involving him and some other people being in a hotel room in New Orleans and watching "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes" which inspired them to all act like monkeys for a few hours, but as we're unclear of the context or what prompted the telling of such a tale, we'll just file that under "Myths and Legends."

Our weeklong celebration of all things Robert Pattinson has almost reached its glorious, OME-laden conclusion with the debut of "MTV First: Robert Pattinson," our 30-minute conversation with the "Twilight" star. But before the show goes live at 8:56 p.m. ET, we've got one more favorite RPattz moment to present — our favorite one of all
Previously, we've celebrated our first interview with him and Kristen Stewart, the duo'sonstage smooch at the MTV Movie Awards, Rob's firstappearance at the Oscars and his love for "Twilight"-branded personal lubrication.
So what happened to nab our #1 favorite RPattz moment? Oh, just the time he uncorked a few filthy words during a live MTV News interview.
It all went down last June at the "Eclipse" premiere during our red-carpet live stream. The crowd outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles was squealing like mad, and we wanted to know if one rumor could possibly be true: Was Pattinson really looking forward to the moment the "Twilight" franchise would be behind him?
"That was such bullsh--. I am so pissed off!" he said.
But Rob, man, we're live!
"Oh sh--!" he cried.
That's not making it better. Oh well, those are the perils and pleasures of reporting live. And as it turned out, after Pattinson declared that he'd been misquoted about being ready to leave "Twilight" behind, he went on to give us a very thoughtful answer about the prospect of life after the vampire franchise.
"Anyone who says they're tired of this is completely crazy. If I ever said that, someone should just remind me of what I was doing before: just sitting around doing nothing," he said, adding, "I love doing the movies. I like all the people. I've had a great time on all of them. The cast is great. It's just weird. It's become so much a part of my life. It's like divorcing someone. I guess I'll see. Maybe it'll be great. I have no idea."

His Cross to Bear: Heartthrob Vampire
Fair enough. A guy’s got to work. But Mr. Pattinson was also not particularly eager to chat for the quadrillionth time about Edward Cullen, the tenderhearted vampire he will reprise on June 30 in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” When he was finally able to break away from the circus (the setting of “Water for Elephants,” not the throng of paparazzi and hyperventilating girls who trail him around), Mr. Pattinson seemed to have a bit of “Twilight” burnout.
“It can get a little boring,” he said softly over coffee at the Four Seasons hotel here, referring both to playing an unchanging vampire and to chewing over the Cultural Importance of It All. “The good news is that the whole thing is done in seven months.”
Not that he’s counting the days or anything.
Fortunately for fans (and Summit) and unfortunately, it seems, for Mr. Pattinson, the tally is short by about a year. Filming may wrap up on the “Twilight” series in seven months, but Summit has decided to split the fourth (and final) “Twilight” novel by Stephenie Meyer, “Breaking Dawn,” into two parts. So Mr. Pattinson will probably be out hawking the final installment in the summer of 2012.
Please don’t misunderstand him. Mr. Pattinson, 24, is fully aware that he probably would not have much of a career without the “Twi-hards,” as the mostly female following of the movies are known. His only role of note prior to Edward Cullen was a bit part in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” as Cedric Diggory, the doomed love interest of Hermione. To achieve this level of success so soon after coming to Hollywood — “Twilight” and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” took in a cumulative $1.1 billion at the global box office — is the rarely achieved dream of young actors everywhere.
“I’ve learned to let it go a bit, but I’m still really bothered by it,” he said. “The more you are exposed, the more people irrationally hate you, I think we reached a point, a peak, with ‘New Moon’ where the stories became so saturated into the culture that it started to feel normal. It’s like the tabloids don’t know what to write anymore because they’ve used up all their scandals.”
He also worries about getting pigeonholed as nothing more than a teen idol. Sure, he excels as a pale brooder in the gooey “Twilight” movies, as evidenced by how fully Ms. Meyer’s legions — the books have sold about 100 million copies worldwide since 2005 — have embraced him. But Mr. Pattinson talks about a desire to play “characters that are not parodies,” and he would love to do a comedy with Todd Solondz (“Welcome to the Dollhouse”). He would like to have a career like Joaquin Phoenix, somebody who makes unorthodox roles pop. (That’s when Mr. Phoenix is working in front of the camera at all and not pursuing other interests, like music or showing up all bearded and bizarre on the “Late Show With David Letterman.”)
To this end the London-born Mr. Pattinson has been busy accepting roles that seem linked only by a quirky diversity. In “Water for Elephants,” an adaptation of Sara Gruen’s novel, he plays a veterinarian who joins a Depression-era circus after his parents are killed. The indie “Bel Ami,” from the Maupassant novel, co-starring Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci, has him playing an unscrupulous social climber who rises to power in Paris by manipulating wealthy women. A possible role in a western called “Unbound Captives” calls for him to speak almost entirely in Comanche.
“I do think the teen idol thing is something that Robert Pattinson needs to worry about,” said Jeanine Basinger, the chairwoman of the film studies department at Wesleyan University and the author of “The Star Machine.” “The question is whether an actor is so perfect at one thing at a particular point in time that the audience refuses to accept him as anything else.”
She rattled off a list. Christopher Atkins, who shot to fame (with Brooke Shields) in “The Blue Lagoon” but was soon forgotten when he tried other roles. Corey Feldman, along with most of his “Lost Boys” castmates. The verdict is out on Zac Efron, who next appears in the drama “Charlie St. Cloud.” Worrying that “Footloose” was too similar to “High School Musical,” Mr. Efron bailed on the remake and has been absent from the big screen for over a year.
There is hope. Leonardo DiCaprio, whose post-“Titantic” adoration is probably the closest thing to what Mr. Pattinson has experienced, struggled to move beyond Jack Dawson (remember “The Beach”?) but successfully evolved by picking gritty roles and teaming withMartin Scorsese in movies like “The Aviator,” “The Departed” and “Shutter Island.”
“Water for Elephants,” which also stars Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz, is awaiting a release date from 20th Century Fox. It’s the kind of serious literary role that could bring critical attention and stretch minds about Mr. Pattinson’s range. “There is a profound vulnerability about Rob and his mannerisms, and that makes him supremely accessible,” said Elizabeth Gabler, president of Fox 2000, the studio unit making the film. “He also has an innate kindness about him that is wonderful in this role.”
Mr. Pattinson has clearly enjoyed working on something else. He lit up when talking about the shoot, mentioning a scene in which a lion had to bite his arm and another where he had to spend hours shoveling horse manure — an unsettling detail given the grimy condition of his fingernails. “It feels like everyone is an Oscar winner except me,” he said of the cast and crew.
Much is riding on “Water for Elephants” because his leading roles outside of “Twilight” have disappointed or failed at the box office. The inexpensive romantic drama “Remember Me,” released in March, grossed only $19 million in North America. About $35 million in overseas ticket sales eased the pain a little, but the upshot was that Mr. Pattinson appeared unable to anchor a movie despite the “Twilight” nuttiness. “Little Ashes,” a foreign film in which Mr. Pattinson played a randy Salvador Dalí (and filmed before “Twilight”), barely registered a blip in limited release last year.
The only career advice Hollywood veterans have for Mr. Pattinson is to keep doing what he is doing. “Continuing to take different kinds of roles and continuing to take chances will ultimately work,” said Allen Coulter, who directed “Remember Me.” “People unwilling to see him as anything but Edward Cullen will eventually be worn down.”
Part of Mr. Pattinson’s challenge is undoubtedly the vampire. The only movie franchise that remotely compares to “Twilight” in terms of popularity and the number of films starring the same cast is “Harry Potter.” But as the “Harry Potter” stories have progressed,Daniel Radcliffe has been allowed to grow up. By his “Twilight” character’s very nature — a vampire who doesn’t age — Mr. Pattinson is largely stuck.
“I hope it doesn’t start looking ridiculous,” Mr. Pattinson said, referring to himself growing older but playing the same character.
Audiences can judge for themselves at the end of this month when “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” arrives at the multiplex. The second movie was more about the chemistry between Bella, the sullen high school student (Ms. Stewart), and Jacob, the werewolf (an often shirtless Taylor Lautner). The third movie, filmed at a cost of $68 million and directed byDavid Slade (“Hard Candy”), is about the triangle: the push and pull of Ms. Stewart’s character between her vampire boyfriend and werewolf admirer.
“As Rob has acted more, he has become less conscious of the camera and more connected to the character,” said Wyck Godfrey, a producer of the first three films. Mr. Pattinson’s confidence is growing, he said, but the actor can still be self-deprecating to a fault. “Rob comes out of every scene thinking, ‘Oh God, that was a disaster.’ ”
“Twilight” fever shows few signs of letting up. Advance sales are on a par with “New Moon,” and the number of licensing deals (Burger King, Vitamin Water, Volvo) is enormous. “Eclipse” may open on a similar scale as “New Moon”; the franchise has probably matured, analysts say. But the last two movies opened during the school year, and the hope is that a marquee summer slot — the Fourth of July weekend — will generate repeat business that dwarfs the other films.
Mr. Pattinson won’t have much time to parse the results, much less take a six-month vacation, which is what Mr. Godfrey said the young actor needs. Production for “Breaking Dawn” starts as soon as October.

Celebs wish Rob a Happy Birthday
Robert Pattinson Gets Birthday Greetings From Young Hollywood
Vanessa Hudgens, Stephanie Pratt and others wish RPattz the best atNylon, YouTube party.
HOLLYWOOD — Everyone from Nylon's May cover girls, Vanessa Hudgens, Portia Doubleday and Ashley Greene, to Zac Efron and the girls from "The City" and "The Hills" stopped by the Nylon and YouTube Young Hollywood Party held at the Roosevelt Hotel on Wednesday night. And while they were all there to celebrate young Hollywood's finest, Robert Pattinson's 24th birthday was also on some minds — well, particularly when MTV News asked them about it on the red carpet.
"Rob, I hope you have the best birthday ever, and let me know where your party is," Stephanie Pratt addressed the "Twilight" star via MTV News. "I will be there!"
Chelsea Staub from the TV show "JONAS" seemed to want to join Pratt at Pattinson's birthday bash. "If you want to party, give me a call," she said.
"Happy birthday!" Vanessa Hudgens said with a giggle.
"I whole-heartedly wish you a happy birthday," "The Buried Life" star Ben Nemtin said. His gal pal, "The City" star Whitney Port, added simply, "Happy birthday!"
The conversation very quickly turned to what these young Hollywood stars would give Pattinson for his big day. "A fish taco, 'cause fish tacos are really good," Nemtin said. "And if you haven't had one for your birthday, you should have one."
Hudgens was reluctant to presume what RPattz would want. "I met him once or twice. I don't really know him," she said. "I don't know what he likes. So, I hope he has a good one."
Staub had the perfect gift idea: "Some ear plugs," she suggested for the actor who's greeted worldwide by screaming girls. "Because I'm sure he's going to have hearing damage by the time his career is over."
Pratt, however, decided to take her gift to the next level. "Probably a tux to wear to our wedding," she said.

OK, guys have to admit, it just couldn't be anyone else today. And since it is his special day, I decided to make a special post with more than one picture (all from the most recent individual Vanity Fair shoot).
