Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar® presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

X-Men: First Class

First class? This Marvel prequel — make that pre-prequel, since it antedates most of Wolverine — may suffer from too much class. Genteel Scottish heartthrob James McAvoy plays the young Professor X, and Teutonic-Irish demon lover Michael Fassbender is the man who will become Magneto. Next, expect the pre-pre-prequel, in which the two antagonists are brilliant infants dueling each other from adjacent speeding prams. 6/3

A Better Life

New Moon director Chris Weitz gets serious with a moving drama about the plight of an illegal immigrant (Demián Bichir of Weeds) in Los Angeles who works as a gardener but fosters bigger ambitions for his contemptuous teenage son (José Julián). I was already psyched when the original X-Men: First Class trailer debuted, and now that there's a longer preview, my excitement is getting pretty out of control. Like the first trailer, we see lots of young Magneto and Professor X (Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy) — but this time, there's an equal focus on the youthful students of Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters.
This means more footage of Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Lucas Till as Havok, and so on. You also get to hear more angsty dialogue (being a teenage mutant kind of sucks, guys) and see a little bit of romance between Lawrence and Hoult. To watch the new preview, just read more.

Why You Should See It: The original Pirates team reunites for something that looks surprisingly inspired compared to most of the animation we’ve been prepared to pay money for this year, including Pixar’s dreadful-looking Cars 2. - Dan M.
Battle: Los Angeles (Jonathan Liebesman; March 11th)

Synopsis: A Marine platoon faces off against an alien invasion in Los Angeles.
Why You Should See It: If for no other reason, the PR and marketing department deserve your recognition and 10 bucks for their stellar trailer, posters and overall campaign. Whoever found that auto-tune song? Brava. - Dan M.

Water For Elephants (Francis Lawrence; April 22nd)

Synopsis: A veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet.
Why You Should See It: Based on the best-selling novel, this film boosts an impressive cast including Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz. The trailer looks stunning, and with Waltz in the intriguing role of August Rosenbluth, it’s hopeful that the story will be equally pleasing. – Kristen C.

X-Men: First Class (Matthew Vaughn; June 3rd)

Synopsis: Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.
Why You Should See It: After prepping, but ultimately departing X-Men: Last Stand, Matthew Vaugnn’s (Kick-Ass, Stardust) return to the franchise should provide a breath of fresh air after a sharp decline with non-Singer productions. Bryan Singer also returns as producer, and the stellar cast top-lined by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender place it in my most-anticipated summer movie category. – Jordan R.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (David Yates; July 15th)

Synopsis: The end begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemorts final horcruxes, but when Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again.
Why You Should See It: If you’re like almost every other movie goer for the past decade, you’re anxiously awaiting the finale of this epic series. With the original cast reprising their final roles, the special effects blowing our minds, and the final battle between good and evil within our grasp, this is definitely a film you don’t want to miss. – Josh B.

Immortals (Tarsem; Nov. 11th)

Synopsis: Greek warrior Theseus battles against imprisoned titans.
Why You Should See It: Tarsem has the eye and style of a God. The Cell and The Fall were like 2 hours of going down the chocolate river in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory with being bombarded by uncanny imagery. And with The Fall, Tarsem showed he can make something a little more coherent and emotionally compelling than his initial debut film. Hopefully, he continues that rise with this sword and sandals epic. - Jack G.

On The Road (Walter Salles)

Synopsis: A young man sets out to travel the roads and railways of America.
Why You Should See It: Here’s hoping Walter Salles’ next is more ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ than ‘Dark Water,’ the how-did-this-finally-get-made adaptation of the Jack Kerouac road novel. With Francis Ford Coppola producing and a young, talented cast (Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst) leading the way, this could make Beat-wannabes dreams come true. – Jordan R.

Midnight In Paris (Woody Allen)

Synopsis: A romantic comedy about a family traveling to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.
Why You Should See It: Selected for the opening night film at Cannes, Woody Allen is due for a hit after his last two films have disappointed. The large ensemble cast includes Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Michael Sheen, Adrien Brody, Nina Arianda, Corey Stoll, Mimi Kennedy, Kurt Fullerby, Carla Bruni, and Léa Seydoux. –Jordan R.

Ceremony (Max Winkler)

Synopsis: A young guy crashes the wedding of the thirty-something woman he wants back.
Why You Should See It: Winkler’s directorial debut premiered at TIFF to positive reviews, including my own. Taking a note from Wes Anderson screenplays and a filmmaking style from Baumbach, he has created a lively, often hilarious look at impossible love. – Jordan R.

Butter (Jim Field Smith)

Synopsis: A comedy set in the Midwest U.S., where an adopted girl discovers her talent for butter carving and finds herself pitted against an ambitious local woman in their town’s annual contest.
Why You Should See It: I thought She’s Out of My League was one of the more overlooked comedies last year, and now Jim Field Smith returns with a stronger cast of Olivia Wilde, Hugh Jackman, and Jennifer Garner for his latest film. While the rumored Sundance premiere never happened, look for a release later in the year. – Jordan R.

"Water for Elephants" (April 22)

Stars: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz. Director: Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend”).

2010’s “Remember Me” was supposed to be Pattinson’s chance to prove his appeal beyond Edward Cullen, but that movie has already been forgotten by all but his hardcore fans. Now he has another shot in this Great Depression-era circus-set love triangle between a veterinarian (Pattinson), an equestrian (Witherspoon) and her animal trainer husband (Waltz). And if this one doesn’t work either, Pattinson’s next historical romance, “Bel Ami,” is due later in the year.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" (July 15)

By the time this opens, fans will have been waiting four years to see the exceptional ensemble cast tear into J.K. Rowling’s epic final chapters.

Featuring a talented ensemble cast and a director with established comic book credentials, “First Class” hopes to restore the luster this superhero franchise lost after the underwhelming “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

Sorry Bella/Jacob fans (is that Bacob or Jella?), our angsty heroine's heart has always been with cool vampire Edward. And “Dawn” is when the soulmates marry, get busy and have a little human-vamp über-baby. How much of these antics we'll see in part one of the two part finale is not yet clear. But fangirls are already quivering with anticipation at reports of torrid love scenes. (No doubt still safely within the series' PG-13 limits.)

X-Men: First Class Trailer Has Arrived, and It's Awesome
All I can say is: hell yeah! The X-Men: First Class trailer is finally here, and it's out to show all of the comic book films exactly how it's done. The prequel to the X-Men franchise follows the early days of Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) as they learn how to channel their powers (and before their abilities cause a rift between them). But they're obviously not alone in their fight; the preview also highlights a young Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and Emma Frost (January Jones), along with the rest of the esteemed cast.
This trailer is everything a good trailer should be: suspenseful, sexy, and most importantly, it leaves me craving more. As much as I love the other X-Men movies, it's exciting to see a set of fresh faces taking on the mutants we've come to love (or love to hate). The movie hits on June 3, but take a look after the jump.

What It's About: An unsuspecting college student (Kelly) gets stuck with the roommate from hell (Meester).
The Buzz: In what looks to be 'Single White Female' for the next generation, audiences should experience thrills and chills from watching Meester's good-girl-gone-crazy performance.
'Rango'
Release Date: Mar. 4
Starring: Johnny Depp, Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher
What It's About: Depp voices a chameleon with an identity crisis who ends up the sheriff of an Old West town.
The Buzz: Depp's character is supposedly based on gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who he played in 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.' Can turning Thompson into a lizard make a good kids movie? We can't stop here. This is lizard country!
'Red Riding Hood'
Release Date: Mar. 11
Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Shiloh Fernandez, Julie Christie, Gary Oldman, Lukas Haas
What It's About: A dark re-imagining of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale; here, a young girl falls for a young woodcutter who is deadly when the moon becomes full.
The Buzz: It's directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who did the first 'Twilight' and the harrowing coming-of-age film 'Thirteen.' Plus, a horror take on a fairy tale? What big ambitions you have, grandma!
'Water for Elephants'
Release Date: Apr. 22
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon
What It's About: A veterinary student joins a traveling circus as their animal vet after both of his parents are killed.
The Buzz: All eyes are on Pattinson as he takes on another major role outside of the 'Twilight' series; Oscar buzz has already begun.
'X-Men: First Class'
Release Date: Jun. 3
Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Caleb Landry Jones, January Jones, Jennifer Lawrence
What It's About: It's a prequel to the blockbuster film series, showing a young Magneto and Professor X -- before they became bitter enemies -- leading a team of teenage mutants against the villainous Hellfire Club.
The Buzz: 'Kick-Ass' director Matthew Vaughn is the secret weapon of this film; by setting 'First Class' in a James Bond-inspired 1960s, Vaughn's plans to make the first "silver age" comic book movie might give this franchise a burst of fresh, creative energy.
'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II'
Release Date: Jul. 15
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint,Ralph Fiennes
What It's About: Harry Potter and his friends seek to destroy the last of Voldemort's horcruxes, but when he discovers their intentions, the three wizards must muster all their strength to take down the evil lord in one final battle.
The Buzz: The final installment of 'Harry Potter,' this film stands to be huge; of course everyone wants to know who lives, who dies, and how the whole thing will end.
'The Help'
Release Date: Aug. 12
Starring: Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia L. Spencer, Emma Stone
What It's About: Set in 1960s Mississippi, 'The Help' follows a young writer who convinces several black women to share their experiences working as maids for white families.
The Buzz: Oscar nominee Viola Davis ('Doubt'), who plays Aibileen, the first and most influential maid to be interviewed, gives us high hopes for the film, which is based on a bestselling novel by Kathyrn Stockett.
'Abduction'
Release Date: Sept. 23
Starring: Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina
What It's About: 'Twilight' hunk Taylor Lautner stars as a teen who sets out to discover the truth about himself after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website.
The Buzz: This will be Lautner's first major lead role away from the 'Twilight' series, and it'll be one that will test just how ready he is (and we are) for him to become Hollywood's next big action star.
'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part I'
Release Date: Nov. 18
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner
What It's About: Love is in the air for our favorite couple, as Bella and Edward move one step closer to marriage and -- spoilers! -- babies.
The Buzz: Oscar-winning director Bill Condon is at the helm, which could add some high-brow prestige to this hugely successful blockbuster franchise.
