Her bangs, slicked with gel into a deep, punky side part, were a nearly exact replica of the gunge-inspired 'do's we saw on the Fall 2010 runways; first at Alexander Wang in New York, and then again in Milan atBottega Veneta.
The look takes us back to the special brand of side-shaved skater-punky hair that sprung up in Antwerp in the late 90s. We also saw the side flip on the red carpet this awards season on stars like Taylor Swift and Lea Michelle, though their look was more Hollywood pretty than street slick.
"I always love girls that look tomboyish and a little sexy," said hair stylist Guido Palau told StyleList backstage at Alexander Wang. "And I think they feel great like that. So with the combination of a dryer and hairspray I'm creating a very drained and heavy look. I want something so that when they hit the runway, people would wonder what is that."
What's great about this 'do? It's super easy to do yourself.
"Anyone can wear a side swept bang," explains hair stylist Mark Townsend, who created Lea Michelle's lookat The Grammy's. "It is flattering for every face shape and is an instant hair style, because on those days when you are rushing out the door all you have to do is quickly blow out your bangs and pull the rest of your hair into a ponytail."
To get the edgy look Palau created at Alexander Wang, part hair on one side and brush strands downwards. Generously apply Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray and blowdry bangs downwards to achieve a matted down yet super glossy look.
