As 2011 begins, it’s time for 3-D fans to celebrate.
Hollywood studio chiefs have been working overtime approving big-budget films designed for images that pop off the screen.
The 3-D titles coming this year include “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn,” “Drive Angry,” “5inal Destination,” “Fright Night,” “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” “Gnomeo and Juliet,” “The Green Hornet,” “Happy Feet 2,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,” “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Mars Needs Moms,” “Piranha 3DD,” “Priest,” “Rio,” “Sanctum,” “Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World,” “The Three Musketeers,” “Transformers 3,” and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1.”
Sequels, prequels, remakes and franchise titles will also flood screens in 2011.
They include: “Arthur,” “Big Momma’s House: Like Father, Like Son,” “Caesar: Rise of the Apes,” “Cars 2,” “Fast Five” (another “Fast & Furious” installment), “Footloose,” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Hangover Part II,” “The Mechanic,” “Mission: Impossible 4 — Ghost Protocol,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Scream 4,” “Sherlock Holmes 2,” “Straw Dogs,” “The Thing,” and “X-Men: First Class.”
Also, be prepared for new comic-book franchises (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Green Lantern” and “Thor”) and star-driven vehicles (including “Bad Teacher” with Cameron Diaz, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” with Steve Carell, “Just Go With It” with Adam Sandler, “Larry Crowne” with Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks, “No Strings Attached” with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, and “Tower Heist” with Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy.
Here’s an alphabetical list of some of the films coming to a theater near you through Dec. 31 (with all dates highly subject to change). And the new movies will be:
A, B, C
“Abduction,” with Taylor Lautner (the “Twilight Saga” franchise) in a Pittsburgh-shot thriller about a young guy who sees his baby picture on a missing-persons website and investigates how it got there. John Singleton (“2 Fast 2 Furious”) directed. (Sept. 23)
D, E, F
“Drive Angry,” with Nicolas Cage in an action film about a father who jumps into his supercharged car and chases the culprits responsible for his daughter’s death. It will also be available in 3-D. Patrick Lussier (“My Bloody Valentine”) directed. (Feb. 25)
G, H, I
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” with Daniel Radcliffe and the other regulars in the final installment of the wildly popular franchise. It will also be available in 3-D. Bill Condon (“Gods and Monsters”) directed. (July 15)
“The Help,” with Viola Davis (Doubt”), Bryce Dallas Howard (“Lady in the Water”) and Emma Stone (“Zombieland”) in a drama that’s set in Mississippi during the 1960s when a college student starts writing about the histories of African-American women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent white families. Tate Taylor (“Pretty Ugly People”) directed. (Release date to be determined)
“Immortals,” with Stephen Dorff (“City of Industry”) and Mickey Rourke in a mythological tale about a young warrior who must lead a battle against evil and powerful elder gods. Tarsem Singh (“The Fall”) directed. (Nov. 11)
P, Q, R
“Priest,” with Paul Bettany (“The Tourist”) and Maggie Q (TV’s “Nikita”) in a chiller about a church official who goes against orders and embarks on a journey to save a relative from vampires. It will also be available in 3-D.Scott Charles Stewart (“Legion”) directed. (May 13)
“Rango,” with the voice of Johnny Depp in a computer-animated tale about a chameleon who dreams of being a swashbuckling hero and then discovers the dangers when he gets the chance. Gore Verbinski (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”) directed. (March 4)
“Red Riding Hood,” with Amanda Seyfried (“Mamma Mia! The Movie”), Gary Oldman (“The Dark Knight”) and Shiloh Fernandez (TV’s Jericho”) in a dark retelling of the fairy tale in which demons and werewolves make the title character’s walk in the woods extremely dangerous. Catherine Hardwicke (“Twilight”) directed. (March 11)
“The Roommate,” with Leighton Meester (“Date Night”), Billy Zane (“Titanic”) and Matt Lanter (“Vampires Suck”) in a thriller about a new girl who moves on campus and then deadly things start happening in her dorm room. Danish filmmaker Christian E. Christiansen made his American debut. (Feb. 4)
S, T, U
“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1,” with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner returning as Edward, Bella and Jacob, respectively, in an installment of the vampire/werewolf series that has Edward and Bella worrying about their future together. Bill Condon (“Gods and Monsters”) directed. (Nov. 18)
V, W, X, Y, Z
“Water for Elephants,” with Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson (the “Twilight Saga” franchise) in a drama about a veterinarian for a second-rate traveling circus and his affection for a star performer married to a dangerous circus boss. Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend”) directed. (April 15)
