I was linked to a list of 25 Brits who you should be listening to this morning, and needless to say I disagreed with a great deal of it. That is the beauty of music, we all hear something different and love different stuff. So I am not doing this to dig at the other list I saw earlier, but rather because it got me thinking which 25 British bands and singers I would recommend if someone asked me. No one has asked me, but one of the beauties of being a music writer is I don't have to wait for someone to! The only trouble is, I suck at being concise, so we have 30 musicians here instead.
So, in no particular order other than the odd order my brain remembered them in, are 30 British bands and artists who I love. There are many I have had to miss through the fact I only have 30 slots, I could have honestly gone on all day. Also this is a very "folk" centric list I think, mainly due to the fact my heart wants folk music in winter for some reason, although there are others on here too.
I don't expect you all to agree, in fact I would love it if you suggested more to me in the comments, and argued with me.
Florence and the Machine: Debut album Lungs has put Florence on the map as one of the big voices of 2010. I love the album, but it had been overplayed for me for a while there in the summer (seeming to see Flo on almost every stage I went to at Glastonbury didn't help!) but I have rediscovered it recently, much to my delight. The flame haired singer with great songs and a great voice has already cracked other markets than the UK to some extent, but maybe needs greater investigation by some.myspace
