Pattinson plays the character Eric Packer, a young, multi-billionaire asset manager who sets out one day in Manhattan (there goes Toronto pretending to be NYC again) in his fabulously appointed stretch limo to get a haircut. The story/parable takes place over one day, during which Packer loses everything. The ending is apocalyptic.
Pattinson says Cosmopolis is one of his favourite novels and that the role is very hard, but he is "trying to turn it."
One other note: the musical score will be by Canadian composer Howard Shore, a frequent collaborator with Cronenberg (they worked together on the opera version of The Fly, also Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, Scanners, Eastern Promises, and others). Shore also wrote the music for The Lord of the Rings and is working on The Hobbit
